This one-day workshop is for writers of prose (fiction and nonfiction) seeking to make the most of their writing practice and create quality, publishable work. It is geared to both beginner and intermediate writers.

During the course of the day, the workshop will explore:

  1. The magic of the creative process: While the impulse to write is personal, intangible, and beautiful, it is also often fraught with obstacles, such as lack of focus or time, and fear. The workshop will begin with a brief review of self-bolstering techniques to enhance your writing practice.
  2. The nitty-gritty of storytelling: The workshop will focus mainly on the craft of writing, with an intensive review of the fundamentals of narrative prose. Topics will include characterization and voice, pacing and structure, suspense and drama, and how to refine your work through redrafting and editing with a view to getting published.

Optional: Each participant is invited to submit up to one page (double-spaced) of an opening to a story, essay, or chapter. This work should be emailed to workshops@qwf.org one week before the workshop, with the subject line “For Cora Siré.” Submissions will be discussed in the afternoon of the workshop in a friendly, respectful, and inclusive manner.

By the end of the day, participants should leave with a toolkit for pursuing artistic excellence and a strengthened sense of confidence.
