SUMMARY:Morris House Reading Series (MHRS) - Anakana Schofield
DESCRIPTION:Anakana Schofield reads for MHRS at Bishop’s University on October 1st\, 2019\, at 4.30 pm in Cleghorn (McGreer). She is the author of the acclaimed\, Giller Prize-shortlisted novel Martin John (2015)\, which was also a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize\, and the Goldsmiths Prize in the UK. It was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and named a best book of the year by the Wall Street Journal\, The Globe and Mail\, National Post\, Sunday Business Post\, Toronto Star\, and The Irish Times\, among others. Her debut novel Malarky (2012) won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award and the 2013 Debut-Litzer Prize for Fiction in the US; it was a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and selected as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. It was also named on many Best Book of the Year lists for 2012 and 2013. \nEvent is open to the public and followed by a free reception.

SUMMARY:Dialogic Encounter with Rawi Hage
DESCRIPTION:The “Dialogic Encounter” is a two-evening discussion of the recent novel\, “Beirut Hellfire Society”\, by Rawi Hage. On September 30\, Prof. Cornett engages the audience directly both as a group and as individuals in a wide-ranging discussion of the novel\, its techniques and themes\, particularly as it engages with current social\, philosophical and ethical issues. The audience also responds to the discussion and excerpts from the novel with their own brief written texts. These responses form the basis for the dialogue with Rawi Hage in the second session of the “Dialogic Workshop”\, on October 7. The audience’s texts are read out and Hage is asked to reflect on the questions and issues and his own work.

SUMMARY:Writing to Preserve Memory: Capturing and Sharing Life Stories
DESCRIPTION:All levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \nIsabel Allende confessed\, “I write to preserve memory against the erosion of oblivion and to bring people together.” \nEvery life is a story\, and when we write that story\, we not only preserve it but share the joys and disappointments\, the heartaches and the triumphs\, and most importantly\, the lessons learnt. \nMemoir\, by its nature\, is more concerned with the emotional truth of occurrences and moments from a life\, as opposed to biography\, which is more often focused on factual or chronological events. \nIn this memoir workshop\, we will explore how to begin telling your story and review examples of the different ways that a story can be told. Will it be a travelogue or will it focus on major events that influenced your life? Or will it be about a relationship with a loved one? These are just a few possibilities. \nA portion of each session will be set aside for writing exercises based on prompts to help unlock the confidence you need to shape your story\, and to share your writing. \nAs an adjunct\, a recommended reading list of traditional and innovative memoirs will be provided\, and participants will be encouraged to review and share their favourite styles.

Her books include the poetry collections Trauma Head (2018)\, a chapbook of the same name (Otter Press\, 2017)\, serpentine loop (Anvil Press\, 2016)\, and the anthologies Against Death: 35 Essays on Living (Anvil Press\, 2019) and V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (Arsenal Pulp Press\, 2012). She founded Thursdays Writing Collective\, a beloved non-profit organization\, and through its ten years\, she edited and published nine of its anthologies. She is an associate director of Vancouver Manuscript Intensive and is the non-fiction editor at Chapter House\, the online journal of the Institute of American Indian Arts where she is an MFA candidate in poetry.\n+\nElee Kraljii Gardiner est une mentore en création\, poète et éditrice établie à Vancouver. The mini-stroke passed quickly but was symptomatic of something larger: a tear in the lining of an artery that opened an examination of mortality and crisis. This long-poem memoir tracks the author’s experiences with un/wellness and un/re-familiarity with herself. Shortlisted for the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative Poetry\, Trauma Head disturbs and disorders language and syntax to reconcile appearance with experience. \nAGAINST DEATH\nThe nimble\, serious play of the title\, Against Death: 35 Essays on Living\, is an accurate reflection of the range of tones\, approaches\, and experiences with death (which is to say\, living) inside this vibrant\, tender collection. While one need not be grieving to find resonance here\, those who grief has touched will not feel silenced or pushed outside. In eloquent\, luminous prose\, these essays will be a companion to many and will be a collection to return to (againlives inside against). As editor Elee Kraljii Gardiner reminds us\, “To be against something can be to reject or refute it. But to be against death can also mean to be in contact with\, pressed up next to\, to be intimately proximate with mortality.” This is all of us.
