SUMMARY:The Very Short Story: Reading and Writing Fiction of 300 to 1000 Words
DESCRIPTION:All levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \nThe very short story comes in many guises. Tale\, fable\, cronica\, feuilleton\, anecdote\, aphorism\, vignette\, sketch\, flash\, prose poem\, yarn\, joke—each of these may fall into its fold\, as may extra-literary forms such as lists or memos. Its main characteristic is brevity. Since it can be written relatively quickly\, it offers a wonderful place for experimentation. Since each word\, punctuation mark\, and line of white space speaks\, it demands precision and invites us to hone our writing skills. \nIn this class we will be reading and discussing a wide variety of very short stories\, from  contemporary writers and writers of the past. We will be reading as writers: seeking inspiration\, and looking at what these stories are doing and how they achieve their ends. What makes a story a story? What can be left out? What is the effect of omission? \nDrawing on class discussion\, students will write their own stories as homework and bring them to class to share. We will read them together\, but we will not focus on critique; our class will be about generating work\, permission to try new things\, and celebrating creativity. It will welcome new writers and those with experience. Participants should end the course with a portfolio of at least eight very short stories. \nFor our first class\, please bring in a published work of fiction of about 300 to 500 words. Be prepared to read it aloud and say what you love about it.

SUMMARY:Taras Grescoe launches Possess the Air
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Taras Grescoe’s thrilling new history of resistance to fascism in Mussolini’s Rome. A reading\, a book talk\, a celebration of Taras and of patriots committed to democracy and inclusion. \nPOSSESS THE AIR\nPlunging readers into Fascist Rome at the height of Mussolini’s power\, Possess the Air tells the story of three people who defied Italy’s authoritarian despot by opposing the rising tide of populism and xenophobia. Two Canadian archeologists\, Gilbert Bagnani and his wife Mary Stewart Houston\, maddened the self-styled Caesar\, determined to dispel his claims that Rome was—and always would be—rightful master of the Mediterranean\, while poet and aviator Lauro de Bosis\, firstborn of an Italian aristocrat and a New Englander\, transformed himself into a modern Icarus\, amazing the world as he risked his life in the skies bring the dictator down. An inspiring story of resistance\, risk\, and sacrifice\, Taras Grescoe’s portrait of heroes past is an essential biography for our time. \nTARAS GRESCOE is the author of seven non-fiction books\, including Sacré Blues\, The End of Elsewhere\, The Devil’s Picnic\, Bottomfeeder\, Straphanger\, and Shanghai Grand. Bottomfeeder won the Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction\, the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction\, and was a finalist for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. He has contributed to the New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, Gourmet\, and The Wall Street Journal. His books have been translated into half a dozen languages. He lives in Montreal.
