SUMMARY:Bodies in Lyric – Tanya Evanson on Spoken Word @ 4th SPACE
DESCRIPTION:Oral poetry\, storytelling\, monologue\, slam and experimental sound performance remain at the fringes of the literary world–largely because they lack a critical framework. \nThis talk by Tanya Evanson will examine some current states in spoken word and look at the work of three Tiohtià:ke/Montreal-based artists: Kaie Kellough\, Moe Clark and Cat Kidd. We round it all out with a live performance featuring Tanya Evanson on vocals\, Jahsun on percussion and Jean-Michel Frédéric on keys. A co-presentation of the Atwater Writers Exhibition\, SpokenWeb\, and the Atwater Poetry Project. \nThis event is a sister to The Page with Ears Open — a Spoken Word Workshop on Saturday\, Feb. 1.

SUMMARY:Young Readers Book Club: Artemis Fowl
DESCRIPTION:Join us at la Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly for our Young Readers book club\, hosted by Caleb Turner. January’s pick is Artemis Fowl. Pizza will be served. All attendees must have the assigned book\, or one book in the assigned series. \nThis is a book club for young readers\, with a median age of 10-12 or fifth\, sixth and sec 1 grades. Younger kids are welcome if the book is appropriate\, but not younger than 8-9\, please. There will be a different book every meeting. The focus is to provide tweens a safe space to learn to discuss and express thoughts and ideas about literature among their peers without parents or teachers. Please note we do not have the space to have parents and kids! \n***We are offering a 20% discount on Artemis Fowl from now until the meeting date!*** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated.

SUMMARY:Genji Book Club - Intro
DESCRIPTION:The Tale of Genji\, written by Murasaki Shikibu around the year 1000\, is often considered the world’s first novel. Her story of the Shining Prince of the Imperial Court and his life\, culture\, and relationships with women\, has stood the test of time and form an important piece of the foundation of Japanese literature. \nFor 2020\, the Japan Book Club\, presented in collaboration with the Argo and JETAA Q/A\, is meeting monthly to discuss this important and still lively work. You can read the complete Tale of Genji in any of its English translations\, by Arthur Waley\, Edward Seidensticker\, Royall Tyler\, or Dennis Washburn; we have all of them available for sale in the store. \nIn our first edition\, before we dive into the text\, our group leader will discuss the aesthetics\, mores\, and context of the Heian period\, to provide context for the story ahead. Please join us for this trip through a historic yet timeless tale!
