Over four weeks\, you’ll learn about key differences in academic and popular writing\, tools for narrowing down and shaping ideas\, practical writing techniques\, and where and how to pitch non-academic writing. Participants have the option of joining an additional six-week intensive workshop focused on developing a specific piece from beginning to end. \nWorkshop sessions are online through Zoom videoconference. \nSchedule: Thursdays\, April 22\, 29\, May 6\, 13 from 4 pm – 5:30 pm

SUMMARY:Voices in the Dark: Writing the Braided Essay
DESCRIPTION:In this free 90-minute craft workshop\, delivered on Zoom\, Kasia Van Schaik will lead participants through the process of writing a personal essay using a braided technique: a form of nonfiction wherein the writer interweaves multiple threads and through-lines of material\, each on a different subject\, connecting the personal with the political. In this way\, the braided form allows us to think about the ways in which we are linked to our larger environments and ecosystems. The workshop will include a craft talk\, writing tips\, and creative exercises\, so bring a pen and paper! A short question and answer period will follow. \n  \nThe workshop is open to all interested participants; no creative nonfiction writing experience is necessary. There is no registration fee\, but you must register to attend. \n  \nThis workshop is co-produced by the Quebec Writers’ Federation and CBC Montreal.
