SUMMARY:Mountain Writing - Self Directed Residency 2023
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe Self-Directed Mountain Writing program is a three-week residency for four established writers working in any genre (fiction\, nonfiction\, journalism\, or poetry)\, on mountain narratives\, environmental journalism\, stories of adventure\, or projects with climbing or mountaineering themes. \nWith a strong emphasis on literary quality\, interior journeys of exploration and the psychology of extreme endeavours are as much a focus as the physical accomplishments involved. \nWriters will enjoy dedicated\, uninterrupted writing time in a spectacular mountain setting\, and the communality of a small group of peers from around the world. \nThis program overlaps with the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival where visiting authors\, editors\, or publishers will offer further enrichment and inspiration. \nWhat does the program offer? \nParticipants will be encouraged to meet regularly to share work and projects for independent peer review and community support. During the program\, once weekly\, published guest speakers will present to the participants on topics and themes relevant to the program. \nWriters will be allocated a Leighton Artist Studio for personal use. \nWho should apply? \nEstablished writers with a proven publication record seeking a period of dedicated time to work on a project in the mountain writing genre. \nWe welcome writers from all backgrounds\, as well as gender identities and expressions. \nApplication Deadline: August 02\, 2023\nProgram Dates: October 25 – November 15\, 2023\nLearn more and apply online: https://bit.ly/3OMzGcW\nFinancial Aid is available for this program.

SUMMARY:Writing Historical Non-Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, Nov 12\, 10am-4pm \n\n\n\nOpen to all \n\n\n\nLimited to 12 participants \n\n\n\nHybrid Workshop \n\n\n\nWriting original and entertaining non-fiction is hard enough. \n\n\n\nBut when you set about writing historical non-fiction about true events and real characters that happened many years\, decades or even centuries ago\, your challenges only increase. You cannot interview your main characters\, they are long dead. Archives may be hard to access or expensive. How do you bring to life your locations and scenes and make them accessible and understandable to the modern-day reader? \n\n\n\nThis all-day workshop with best-selling author and journalist Julian Sher takes you through the steps to make your next project a success – or at least achievable. The topics covered include: \n\n\n\n\nCHOOSING YOUR TOPIC\n\n\n\n\n\nKEY RESEARCH TOOLS – BOOKS\n\n\n\n\n\nKEY RESEARCH TOOLS – NEWSPAPERS\n\n\n\n\n\nKEY RESEARCH TOOLS – PHOTOS\n\n\n\n\n\nKEY RESEARCH TOOLS – LIBRARIANS\n\n\n\n\n\nWRITING: START RIGHT AWAY\n\n\n\n\n\nWRITING APPROACH\n\n\n\n\n\nWRITING STYLE\n\n\n\nCONTROVERSIAL ISSUES: (Cultural appropriation. Political correctness\, presentism and trigger words.)\n\n\n\n\n\nFACT CHECKING\n\n\n\nSELLING YOUR BOOK\n\n\n\n\nWe will be using examples from some of the best writers of the genre from a variety of backgrounds —  women\, men\, Black and  Indigenous including Margaret McMillan\, Eric Larsen\, Sidney Schama\, Tanya Talaga\, Ben MacIntyre and Isabel Wilkerson. \n\n\n\nParticipants are encouraged to read samples of these authors’ work and\, if they want\, Julian’s three historical non-fiction books: The North Star\, Until You are Dead and White Hoods. More information on these books at www.juliansher.com/books. Julian Sher is an award-winning investigative journalist — the author of seven books\, a veteran TV documentary writer and director as well as an accomplished. Julian’s latest book tells the little-known story of Canada’s role in the American Civil War. The North Star: Canada and the Civil War Plots against Lincoln\, published by Penguin Random House. Released in April 2023\, it became an Amazon bestseller hailed as “a riveting and fascinating read”  with excerpts published in the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, the Montreal Gazette and La Presse. He also wrote the award-winning national bestseller Until You Are Dead: The Wrongful Conviction of Steven Truscott about Canada’s most famous murder trial\, which led to an official re-opening a 40-year-old case. The best-selling book was re-issued with an updated afterword in 2023.
