SUMMARY:January Japan Book Club
DESCRIPTION:January 25\, 7:00-9:00 pmOnline via Zoom (registration instructions below)\n\n\n\nLooking for a book to start your new year with some poetic verve? The Argo Bookshop\, in conjunction with the JET Alumni Association of Quebec and Atlantic Canada\, will be hosting its next Japan Book Club on January 25th.   \n\n\n\nFor this meeting\, we’ll be discussing A Narrow Road to the Interior by Matsuo Basho. This classic work from the famed poet details a trip through late 17th century Japan\, with scenery and anecdotes punctuated with poetry. While the haiku themselves are considered a masterwork\, the travelogue also has inspired many people to follow in Basho’s footsteps and travel through less trafficked country in Japan.   \n\n\n\nJoin us online via Zoom for a lively discussion! Email events@argobookshop.ca for the link. You can read the book in any language. We will be stocking two translations of the book in the store\, but you are welcome to read a different one! You’re also welcome to come if you haven’t read the book\, but there will be spoilers (as much as there can be for a centuries-old poetic travelogue!).

SUMMARY:The Sleeping Car Porter (Violet Hour Book Club)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next meeting of the Violet Hour Book Club\, a reading group devoted to classic and contemporary works of LGBTQ literature. The book we will be discussing is The Sleeping Car Porter (2022) by Suzette Mayr\, winner of the 2022 Giller Prize. The Sleeping Car Porter brings to life an important part of Black history in North America\, from the perspective of a queer man living in a culture that renders him invisible in two ways. SUMMARY:Conversation and Q &A with Ariela Freedman about Léa
DESCRIPTION:A conversation and Q & A with Ariela Freedman about her most recent novel\, Léa\, moderated by Linda Shohet. Based on famed Quebec activist Léa Roback (1903-2000)\, the novel brings to life a heroine emboldened by political struggles that resonate to this day. Léa\, born to a large Jewish family and raised in a small French Catholic town\, navigates languages and cultures to fight for social justice and change for women\, for unions\, and for any cause where she noted injustice. Ariela will discuss what drew her to Roback\, why she chose to focus on her early years\, and why Roback remains a revered figure in Quebec social justice circles.

SUMMARY:True Reads Book Club - Gay Bar: Why We Went Out
DESCRIPTION:VIA ZOOM Meeting ID: 845 5830 7388\nPasscode: 024605 \nCome discuss the best new Non-Fiction books with our True Reads book club! This month\, we’ll be discussing Gay Bar: Why We Went Out by Jeremy Atherton Lin. \nWhere and How Can I purchase the book?\nFind the book here: https://bit.ly/3fSab8f \nMore info on our webstore here:\nhttp://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/posts/webstore-faq \nWe Ship Canada-wide!\nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. Your support is appreciated. \n//////////////////////////////////////////////\nGAY BAR: WHY WE WENT OUT\nStrobing lights and dark rooms; throbbing house and drag queens on counters; first kisses\, last call: the gay bar has long been a place of solidarity and sexual expression—whatever your scene\, whoever you’re seeking. But in urban centers around the world\, they are closing\, a cultural demolition that has Jeremy Atherton Lin wondering: What was the gay bar? How have they shaped him? And could this spell the end of gay identity as we know it?\nIn Gay Bar\, the author embarks upon a transatlantic tour of the hangouts that marked his life\, with each club\, pub\, and dive revealing itself to be a palimpsest of queer history. In prose as exuberant as a hit of poppers and dazzling as a disco ball\, he time-travels from Hollywood nights in the 1970s to a warren of cruising tunnels built beneath London in the 1770s; from chichi bars in the aftermath of AIDS to today’s fluid queer spaces; through glory holes\, into Crisco-slicked dungeons and down San Francisco alleys. He charts police raids and riots\, posing and passing out—and a chance encounter one restless night that would change his life forever.\nThe journey that emerges is a stylish and nuanced inquiry into the connection between place and identity—a tale of liberation\, but one that invites us to go beyond the simplified Stonewall mythology and enter lesser-known battlefields in the struggle to carve out a territory. Elegiac\, randy\, and sparkling with wry wit\, Gay Bar is at once a serious critical inquiry\, a love story and an epic night out to remember.
