Her publishing career began as Publishing Assistant at Tundra Books\, PRHC. She then joined HarperCollins Canada as Associate Editor where she developed a vibrant list including The Garden of Lost Socks by Esi Edugyan and Amélie Dubois\, The Hockey Skates by Karl Subban and Maggie Zeng\, and Mortified by Kristy Jackson and Rhael McGregor. At Simon & Schuster Canada\, she remains focused on publishing marginalized\, Canadian voices that tell entertaining and transformative stories. Yash lives in Toronto with a magical\, if unruly\, library that just keeps growing. \n\n\n\nFiroze Manji\, PhD\, is a Kenyan / Canadian\, resident in Québec. He has spent more than 50 years in international development\, health\, human rights and political activism. He is the publisher of Daraja Press and is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of African Studies\, Carleton University\, Ottawa. He is the recipient of the 2021 Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association. \n\n\n\nLeila Marshy is the author of The Philistine (LLP\, 2018) and My Thievery of the People (Baraka Books\, 2025)\, and is editor of the anthology Razing Palestine: Punishing Solidarity and Dissent in Canada (Baraka Books\, 2025). Daughter of a Palestinian refugee\, Marshy lived in Cairo during the First Intifada and worked for the Palestinian Red Crescent and the Palestinian Mental Health Association. She has been a community and political organizer\, including founding a dialogue group with the Hasidic community in her local neighbourhood\, helping elect the first Hasidic woman to public office in the world. Marshy is editor at Baraka Books and lives in Montreal. \n\n\n\nCurtis John McRae is the fiction editor at Véhicule Press and the Co-Founder/Editor-in-Chief of yolk literary journal. He is the author of Quietly\, Loving Everyone (Vehicule Press\, 2025). His fiction has appeared in The New Quarterly\, Prairie Fire\, and others. He won the 2021/22 David McKeen Award\, was longlisted for the 2025 DISQUIET Literary Fiction Contest\, received an honourable mention in the 2024 Peter Hinchcliffe award\, and was a finalist in the 2019 Quebec Writers’ Federation contest for emerging young writers. Curtis teaches English literature at John Abbott College and formerly served as a board member for the Quebec Writers’ Federation. \n\n\n\nShannae Nitti is a marketing and sales professional with a background in communications\, business development\, and brand strategy. Drawn to the publishing industry for its blend of creativity and purpose\, she’s passionate about the business of books—from shaping ideas to understanding readers and trends. Shannae values the craft\, collaboration\, and evolution that make publishing such a dynamic and inspiring field. \n\n\n\nDave Dufour is the founder and publisher of Flame Arrow Publishing\, a bilingual speculative-fiction press based in British Columbia and Quebec. He leads a growing catalogue of hopepunk\, fantasy\, and science fiction in both English and French\, and is dedicated to championing bold\, imaginative voices across Canada. With a professional background as an educator and linguist\, Dave brings a deep understanding of language\, culture\, and storytelling to his editorial vision. He also oversees Brins d’éternité\, one of Québec’s longest-running speculative-fiction magazines. \n\n\n\nLori Schubert is the executive director of the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, where she has worked since 2003. From 1998 to 2017 she was also a member and general manager of VivaVoce\, a professional chamber choir. Prior to her work in arts management\, Lori was a singer and corporate communications trainer in the New York metropolitan area. She has taught written and oral communication at Columbia\, McGill and Concordia Universities. She was instrumental in the founding of Quebec’s English-language Arts Network (ELAN) and has served two terms on its board of directors. Through QWF\, Lori co-founded the National Juries and Awards Working Group in 2021. She has also served in an advisory capacity for YES Montreal\, the Blue Metropolis Foundation and the Atwater Writers’ Exhibition\, and currently chairs the Education and Skills Development Table for the Working Group on Arts and Culture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2025 Read Quebec Book Fair

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 24\, 2024\, 7:00 pm ET\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special Violet Hour at Pulp Bookstore in Verdun\, celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Metonymy Press. \n\n\n\nCreated in 2014 by Ashley Fortier and Oliver Fugler\, Metonymy Press aims to reduce barriers to publishing for authors whose perspectives are underrepresented in order to produce quality materials relevant to queer\, feminist\, and social justice communities. \n\n\n\nViolet Hour’s Christopher DiRaddo will be speaking with publishers Ashley and Oliver about Metonymy’s beginnings and the past decade. We’ll also be hearing from press authors H Felix Chau Bradley and Kama La Mackerel\, and there will be readings from Ralph Haddad and Leila Marshy\, both of whom appear in Metonymy’s recent release\, El Ghourabaa: A Queer and Trans Collection of Oddities. \n\n\n\nHosted by Christopher DiRaddo \n\n\n\nA partnership between Metonymy Press\, Librairie Pulp Books & Cafe\, The Équipe de recherche en études Queer au Québec and Violet Hour. \n\n\n\nAbout the Press\n\n\n\nMetonymy Press is based in Tio’tià:ke\, unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory. For ten years\, Metonymy has been publishing literary works by emerging queer and trans writers — what one author described as “books that reframe power and affirm life.” They really want to keep gay book lovers satisfied. \n\n\n\nMetonymy is the project of Ashley Fortier and Oliver Fugler. They met on their first day of high school and have been writing together and editing for each other ever since. Their work is supported by a fantastic roster of collaborators\, including acquisitions editors H Felix Chau Bradley\, Kama La Mackerel\, and Eli Tareq El Bechelany-Lynch. \n\n\n\nAbout the Writers\n\n\n\nH Felix Chau Bradley is a writer and editor living in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). They are the author of Personal Attention Roleplay\, a story collection. You can find their recent work in carte blanche\, ESPACE art actuel\, the Ex-Puritan\, GLYPHÖRIA\, the Humber Literary Review\, PRISM International\, Words Without Borders and Xtra. \n\n\n\nRalph Haddad specialized in Islamic Studies with a Concentration on emerging Gender and Sexuality studies coming out of and around Southwest Asia. He currently serves as the Head of Advocacy for Basmeh and Zeitooneh\, a Syrian refugee-led organization based in Lebanon\, where he aims to advance the cause of refugee protection at such a critical juncture in Lebanese history. Ralph is Lebanese-born and currently resides in Montreal\, but is perpetually in search of home. \n\n\n\nKama La Mackerel is an educator\, visual artist\, performer\, writer and translator who works between and across English\, French and Mauritian Kreol. They are the author of the award-winning poetry collection ZOM-FAM (Metonymy Press) and have translated works by Canadian writers Vivek Shraya and Kai Cheng Thom. They have lectured\, performed and exhibited their work internationally. Find them on social media @kamalamackerel \n\n\n\nLeila Marshy is a Palestinian-Montrealer. During the First Intifada\, she worked for the Palestinian Red Crescent\, the Palestinian Mental Health Association\, and Medical Aid for Palestine. In 2011\, she founded Friends of Hutchison\, a groundbreaking community group bringing Hasidic and non-Hasidic neighbours together in dialogue. Her first novel\, The Philistine\, was published in 2018 and in French in 2021. Her collection of stories\, My Thievery of the People\, will be out in March 2025. The session will be led by Geneviève Lauzon\, General-Director of UNEQ\, and Pierre-Yves Villeneuve\, President of UNEQ. Julie Barlow\, former president of QWF\, will moderate the session. There will be time for questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nFree and open to all \n\n\n\nAbout the Loi sur le statut de l’artiste\n\n\n\nAdopted in June 2022\, the Loi sur le statut de l’artiste is intended to bring together the provisions governing the professional status of artists working in visual arts\, film\, recording arts\, arts and crafts\, performing arts\, and literature. He is a Rhodes Scholar and in 2004 was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. His many books include The Organist: Fugues\, Fatherhood\, and a Fragile Mind\, a memoir of his father; Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages and The Prodigal Tongue: Dispatches from the Future of English\, among other books on language; Conversations with a Dead Man: The Legacy of Duncan Campbell Scott\, an unconventional look at Canada’s colonial history; and several poetry collections and children’s books. His work has won international praise and has been translated into five languages. He lives in Montreal. \n\n\n\nNyla Matuk is the author of two books of poetry: Sumptuary Laws (2012) and Stranger (2016) both published by Véhicule Press. She is also the editor of an anthology of poems\, Resisting Canada\, published by Véhicule Press in 2019. In 2018\, Nyla served as the Mordecai Richler Writer in Residence at McGill University. She lives in Montreal. \n\n\n\nGabrielle Boulianne-Tremblay is a writer\, actor\, model\, and trans activist. The first trans woman to be nominated as an actress at the Canadian Screen Awards\, her other publications include two poetry books: Le ventre des volcans and Les secrets de l’origami. Dandelion Daughter (Véhicule Press 2023) is the English-language translation of her novel La fille d’elle-même\, which won the 2022 Prix des libraires. \n\n\n\nTawhida Tanya Evanson is an Antiguan-Québecoise poet\, performer and producer. Her first novel\, Book of Wings (Véhicule Press 2021)\, was longlisted for Canada Reads 2022 and was awarded the Blue Metropolis/Conseil des arts de Montreal New Contribution Literary Prize 2023. She is the author of two books of poetry\, Nouveau Griot (Frontenac 2018) and Bothism (Ekstasis 2017). With a 20-year practice in spoken word\, she performs internationally and has released several studio albums and videopoems. Evanson has been named Poet of Honour at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word\, and has received the Golden Beret Award for her contribution to the spoken-word genre. Born and based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal\, she moonlights as a whirling dervish. \n\n\n\nSusan Glickman’s most recent book is Artful Flight: Selected Essays 1985-2019. She is the author of seven books of poetry\, four novels for adults\, three novels for children\, and a work of literary history. Her forthcoming book of poems\, Cathedral/Grove\, will be published by Véhicule Press in April 2023. She lives in Toronto where she works as a freelance editor and is learning to paint. \n\n\n\nKaie Kellough is a novelist\, poet\, and sound performer. His work emerges at a crossroads of social engagement and formal experiment. From western Canada\, he lives in Montréal and has roots in Guyana\, South America. His books include Dominoes at the Crossroads (short fiction\, Véhicule Press 2020)\, Magnetic Equator (poetry\, McClelland and Stewart 2019)\, and Accordéon (novel\, ARP 2016). Kaie’s writing has been awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize and the QWF Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction. It has been listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize\, the Grand Prix du Livre de Montréal\, the Amazon/Walrus Foundation First Novel Award\, the ReLit Award\, and the QWF A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry. Kaie’s work has traveled internationally\, notably to festivals in the UK\, Australia\, Asia\, the Caribbean\, and continental Europe. He continues to craft new passages. \n\n\n\nDimitri Nasrallah is the author of four novels. His most recent\, 2022’s Hotline\, was selected for Canada Reads 2023 and longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. He was born in Lebanon in 1977\, and moved to Canada in 1988. His previous books include The Bleeds\, Niko\, and Blackbodying. He lives in Montreal\, where he serves as fiction editor for Véhicule Press’s Esplanade Fiction imprint and teaches creative writing at Concordia University. \n\n\n\nMichael Prior earned an MFA from Cornell University and an MA in English literature from the University of Toronto. He is the author of Burning Province (2020) and Model Disciple (2016)\, which was named one of the best books of the year by the CBC. Prior’s honors include Magma Poetry’s Editors’ Prize\, the Walrus Poetry Prize\, and Matrix Magazine’s Lit POP Award for Poetry. He is an assistant professor of English at Macalester College\, and he divides his time between Saint Paul\, Minnesota and Vancouver\, British Columbia. \n\n\n\nAndrew Steinmetz is the author of five previous books. This Great Escape: The Case of Michael Paryla was a finalist for the 2013 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction\, and Eva’s Threepenny Theatre won the City of Ottawa Book Award and was a finalist for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. His forthcoming novel\, Because\, will be published by Véhicule Press in May 2023. A life-long musician\, Steinmetz formed the band Weather Permitting in 1985. In the 1990s\, he was a member of the alt-country band Good Cookies. He lives in Ottawa.
