SUMMARY:Book Launch: Nine Bags of Gold
DESCRIPTION:Join Argo Bookshop for the Montreal launch of Nine Bags of Gold: The Real-Life Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Acadie by Stéphane LeBlanc-Rainville! This event is free\, but space is limited\, so please RSVP. \nMasks are not required\, but will be provided for free at the door. \nPlease contact us at least a day in advance for elevator access to the store. \nPlease also note that the street in front of the store is under construction. The store is accessible on foot\, but not by car\, and parking in the vicinity is consequently limited. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nIn the late 1800s\, an elderly man named Simpson travelled from Québec to Moncton\, New Brunswick\, with a French map from the mid-1700s. The chart\, he claimed\, pointed to a fortune—nine leather bags of gold—which had been buried in Acadie by mid-eighteenth-century French troops on the run. \nSimpson partnered with local excavator Sherman Blakeny. Sponsored by Moncton’s wealthy elite\, the two launched a massive search. Dozens of labourers plowed seven acres of land in Irishtown down to a depth of five feet. \nWhat did they find? It’s a question author and skeptic Stéphane LeBlanc-Rainville has spent years researching. \nNine Bags of Gold brings this never-before-told saga of eighteenth-century intrigue to light\, excavating age-old legends\, furtive protagonists\, deathbed confessions\, mind-bending plot twists\, questionable treasure maps\, large-scale digs\, and tantalizing cliffhangers. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nStéphane LeBlanc-Rainville earned his PhD from McGill in 2000. He enjoyed a second career as a consulting neuroscientist—most recently for industry—after years in academia. Lately\, he turned his focus on his Acadian and Maritimer roots. His first investigative historical non-fiction\, Nine Bags of Gold\, dives into an ambitious late-1800s treasure hunt near his native Moncton. Stéphane currently lives in the Montréal area with his wife\, Farah\, and his two children\, Gabrielle and Olivier. \nRSVP: https://www.ticketsource.com/argo-bookshop/t-oemydrr

SUMMARY:Book Launch: No Brainer by Lea Beddia
DESCRIPTION:Join Lea Beddia for the launch of her new book\, No Brainer (Orca Book Publishers). \nAbout the Book\nLiv is happy in her joggers\, sports T-shirts and no bra. \nShe doesn’t like tight jeans and doesn’t feel comfortable in a bra. But one boy in her gym class\, Jerry\, harasses Liv with rude comments about her breasts. When she stands up to him\, Liv is the one who finds herself in trouble. Even though her clothes fit the dress code\, her principal insists that Liv wear a bra to gym class. It’s unfair and Liv refuses to give in to the demand. \nGossip flies around the school as Liv stands up to Jerry and the school administration. Then a “free the boobs” campaign is started to demean Liv\, and she and her friend Mia decide to take a stand. They create a poster to encourage girls to wear what they want without shame\, but Liv is sent to the principal’s office once again and is told that her poster will be taken down before the school’s open house. But Liv isn’t going to stand down. There are no school rules that dictate girls must wear bras. Why can’t girls wear what they want without being shamed? \nThis short novel is a high-interest\, low-reading-level book for teen readers who are building reading skills\, want a quick read or say they don’t like to read.

SUMMARY:STORIES FROM CANADA’S NORTH / A LA RENCONTRE DU NORD CANADIEN
DESCRIPTION:In 2006\, author Hélèna Katz left her familiar Mile End neighbourhood for life on a small alpaca farm in the Northwest Territories. New experiences such as learning to scrape a moosehide from a group of Dene women captivated her. Dealing with bears on her lawn was more challenging. Shopping that requires a 10-hour drive to pick up both the mundane and the unusual – such as little frozen mice for a community member’s pet snake – amused her. \nHélèna’s latest book\, Dispatches from Canada’s North\, shares more than 40 stories about the joys and challenges of living in the North. Her bilingual Montreal launch at Bibliothèque Mordecai-Richler in Mile End will include stories from the book and photos of some of the places to which she has travelled in the North.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Spying on America
DESCRIPTION:Join us in store for the Montreal launch of Spying on America! We will be welcoming Bill Gaston and his son\, Vaughn Gaston\, for a reading and discussion. This event is free\, but space is limited\, so please RSVP on TicketSource. \nMasks are not required\, but will be provided for free at the door. \nPlease contact us at least a day in advance for elevator access to the store. \nPlease also note that the street in front of the store is under construction. The store is accessible on foot\, but not by car\, and parking in the vicinity is consequently limited. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nOn a June morning in 2022\, Bill Gaston drives off the Victoria–Port Angeles ferry in a rented Dodge Charger with his two sons. Born in the USA but “Canadian through and through\,” Gaston is on a road trip to Tabor\, Iowa\, the town founded by his great\, great\, great-grandparents as the westernmost hub of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Gastons’ eleven-day trip to Tabor and back takes them up and down and across a swathe of rural red states. Motivated equally by a curiosity to find out what really makes Americans tick and the motto ya gotta stop\, the Gastons explore the American west\, navigate unmapped dirt roads\, eat too many French fries\, overnight in clapped-out motels\, visit a Buddhist mountain monastery\, marvel at spectacular landforms\, and enjoy unlikely conversations with real Americans. \nBoth a sideways glance at contemporary American culture and a mordant yet tender account of the true meaning of ancestry\, Spying on America is an unpredictably insightful exploration of family\, Canada’s neighbour\, and the “American bald ego.” \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nBill Gaston was born in Tacoma\, Washington\, and grew up in Canada\, becoming a Canadian citizen as a teenager to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. He has lived and worked\, mostly as an itinerant scholar\, all across Canada\, in Nova Scotia\, New Brunswick\, Toronto\, Vancouver and\, finally\, Victoria. Gaston is the author of numerous books of fiction\, non-fiction\, and poetry\, including The World\, winner of the Ethel Wilson Prize for Fiction; Gargoyles\, winner of the Victoria Book Prize and finalist for a Governor General’s Award; Mount Appetite\, finalist for the Giller Prize; and the memoir Just Let Me Look at You\, finalist for the RBC Taylor Prize. He lives\, grows food\, and writes\, with the writer Dede Crane\, on Gabriola Island\, in the Salish Sea.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Lisa Richter's Sublunary\, with Gillian Sze\, Misha Solomon and Jessica Bebenek
DESCRIPTION:Join Pulp Books in launching Lisa Richter’s newest poetry collection\, Sublunary on Thursday\, June 4th at 7:00pm! Lisa will be joined by special guests Jessica Bebenek\, Misha Solomon\, and Gillian Sze\, and host James Hawes. This event is supported by the League of Canadian Poets. Free to attend! \nIn Sublunary (University of Alberta Press)\, Lisa Richter explores what it’s like to live “under the moon” in a world that is simultaneously a heartbreak and a total wonder…From Atlantis to Mount Olympus to Christie Pits\, these poems interweave moments of absurdity and awe\, creating a nuanced portrait of what “a reckless intimacy with the world” might look like—for better or worse. Sublunary is a book of elegy\, play\, and rupture that advocates for an ethics of care\, solidarity\, and compassion for our perfectly imperfect selves and each other: a mode of survival that is full-throated and\, at times\, even joyous. \nTo reserve a spot\, please visit the Pulp Books website event page: https://pulpbooks.ca/events/5411620260604

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Wanted: Your House by Monique Polak
DESCRIPTION:Librairie Paragraphe Bookstore and McNally Robinson present a book launch for Wanted: Your House by Monique Polak \nJoin us as author Monique Polak signs and discusses her new book Wanted: Your House \nAdmission is free. \nRefreshments will be served. \nAbout the Book\nA resourceful twelve-year-old comes up with an unusual real estate plan in this moving middle-grade novel about what it means to have\, and make\, a family. \nCyril’s mom has been dragging him to open houses for as long as he can remember. It’s been her dream that one day the two of them will have a house of their own. So\, when she decides she’ll never find one they can afford\, Cyril is relieved\, but also sad for her. Which leads him to an idea: What if they moved in with an older person living alone who needs companionship and housekeeping? And what if that person then leaves the house to his mom in their will? It’s a big “what if.” But one elderly gentleman named Mr. Hartt actually seems open to it. Could this grouchy\, stubborn old man be their dream come true? Or will he turn out to be their worst nightmare? \nAward-winning author Monique Polak has written a highly readable novel that sensitively explores the idea of found family and alternative family structures. Readers will appreciate how the novel’s lovable protagonist\, Cyril\, has caring relationships with his mom\, his best friend and his friend’s family (refugees from the war in Ukraine)\, while also feeling normal middle-grade insecurities and frustrations as he tries to navigate the changes in his and his friend’s family’s lives. The book offers excellent lessons on adaptability and tolerance. The story’s focus on older people (Cyril is originally inspired by a school assignment to interview older adults) offers an opportunity for conversations about aging\, and could inspire readers to cultivate their own intergenerational relationships and learn more about the older people in their lives. \nAbout the Author\nMonique Polak is a journalist and writing instructor. She is a three-time winner of the Quebec Writers’ Federation Prize for Children’s and YA Literature\, recently renamed the QWF Janet Savage Blachford Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature. In 2016\, Monique was the CBC/Quebec Writers’ Federation inaugural writer-in-residence. She lives in Montreal\, Quebec.
