SUMMARY:Writers Read x Kathryn Mockler
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, November 1st at 12pm in MB9C (1600 Rue de Maisonneuve Ouest)\, Kathryn Mockler will join us to read from and discuss her newest collection\, Anecdotes (2023). Kathryn Mocker is the author of five books of poetry. She co-edited the print anthology Watch Your Head: Writers and Artists Respond to the Climate Crisis (2020) and is the publisher of the Watch Your Head website. She runs Send My Love to Anyone\, a literary newsletter\, and is an assistant professor at the University of Victoria. Anecdotes is a hybrid collection written in four parts\, now more relevant than ever\, examining the pressing realities of sexual violence\, abuse\, and environmental collapse. Anecdotes has been described as “an instant ‘post hope’ classic” and a “collection of coming-of-age stories for late stage capitalism.” A question and answer period will then follow the reading.\nWriters Read is part of Concordia University’s Creative Writing program and is supported by the Department of English and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Writers Read\, directed by Professor Sina Queyras since 2011\, invites renowned and emerging authors\, both Canadian and international\, to read from and discuss their work with students and local audiences. In addition to readings\, the series includes Master Classes and professional developmental activities spanning the school year.\nThis event is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Carolyn Guillet's "Seventeen [Anonymous] Women": Public Reading and Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Seventeen women gather around the metaphorical fire of a lit theatrical stage to tell their stories\, to dip their ladles into the bubbling stew-pot of humanity’s collective tales\, some new\, some old. They sing\, they suffer\, they laugh\, they cry. Feisty\, angry\, whimsical\, and forgiving\, they obey the ancient dramatic imperative to act out life’s most challenging obstacles\, crises\, revelations\, and transformations\, for their benefit and for ours. In the same way a painter moves towards the light\, they stumble and grope and feel their way towards joy\, taking us with them. Seventeen women\, seventeen stories\, seventeen juicy spiritual journeys for hungry souls. The premiere production of this vibrant\, playful and evocative theatrical text has been described by Ray Conlogue (former theatre critic Globe & Mail) as “Brilliant… Funny & Sexy”\, and by Jim Burke (theatre critic for Montreal’s Gazette) as “sublime”.

SUMMARY:A Fate Worse Than Death
DESCRIPTION:A Fate Worse Than Death is a multimodal poetry exploration of disabled life. Often met with the refrain that one would “rather be dead” than disabled\, this series of poems instead asks the audience to question what they believe the disabled future holds – and the grief and joy that exist together in it. Written and scored by Nisha Patel\, A Fate Worse Than Death is also the poet’s first foray into new media work that expands the bounds of a where spoken word belongs.

SUMMARY:Librairie D+Q presents Leanne Betasamosake Simpson launching Noopiming
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the virtual launch of Leanne Betasamosake Simpson‘s new book Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies. \nWhere and How Can I purchase the books? Why our webstore of course… We ship Canada-wide!\nhttp://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/webstore \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. Your support is appreciated. \nNOOPIMING: THE CURE FOR WHITE LADIES\nAward-winning Nishnaabeg storyteller and writer Leanne Betasamosake Simpson returns with a bold reimagination of the novel\, one that combines narrative and poetic fragments through a careful and fierce reclamation of Anishinaabe aesthetics. \nMashkawaji (they/them) lies frozen in the ice\, remembering a long-ago time of hopeless connection and now finding freedom and solace in isolated suspension. They introduce us to the seven main characters: Akiwenzii\, the old man who represents the narrator’s will; Ninaatig\, the maple tree who represents their lungs; Mindimooyenh\, the old woman who represents their conscience; Sabe\, the giant who represents their marrow; Adik\, the caribou who represents their nervous system; Asin\, the human who represents their eyes and ears; and Lucy\, the human who represents their brain. Each attempts to commune with the unnatural urban-settler world\, a world of SpongeBob Band-Aids\, Ziploc baggies\, Fjällräven Kånken backpacks\, and coffee mugs emblazoned with institutional logos. And each searches out the natural world\, only to discover those pockets that still exist are owned\, contained\, counted\, and consumed. \nCut off from nature\, the characters are cut off from their natural selves. Noopiming is Anishinaabemowin for “in the bush\,” and the title is a response to English Canadian settler and author Susanna Moodie’s 1852 memoir Roughing It in the Bush. To read Simpson’s work is an act of decolonization\, degentrification\, and willful resistance to the perpetuation and dissemination of centuries-old colonial myth-making. It is a lived experience. It is a breaking open of the self to a world alive with people\, animals\, ancestors\, and spirits\, who are all busy with the daily labours of healing — healing not only themselves\, but their individual pieces of the network\, of the web that connects them all together. \nEnter and be changed.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Reclamation/Ceremony: Healing from Intergenerational Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on trauma theory\, epistemology\, and education for social justice\, Suzanne Methot‘s lecture describes how Indigenous spirituality moves us from woundedness to interrelatedness – and how that process becomes a healing story. The Cartesian emphasis on thinking leads us to an individual\, alone with their thoughts. Living a spiritual life requires us to look outward\, to the world and our place within it. Canada needs a healing story. \n  \nSuzanne Methot is a Nêhiyaw (Cree) writer\, editor\, educator and community worker born in Vancouver\, British Columbia and raised in Peace River\, Alberta. Her work has been published in anthologies including Steal My Rage and Let the Drums Be Your Heart. She has worked in the non-profit sector\, in the classroom\, and in advocacy and direct-service positions in Indigenous community-based agencies. She is co-author of the textbook Aboriginal Beliefs\, Values\, and Aspirations. Her most recent book is titled Legacy: Trauma\, Story\, and Indigenous Healing (ECW Press\, 2019).

SUMMARY:Decolonizing the screen through Indigenous Cinema
DESCRIPTION:For as long as cinema has existed\, there have been stories with Indigenous themes and characters. But up until recently\, very rarely were these stories told from an Indigenous perspective. \nBut more and more\, Indigenous storytellers are decolonizing screens and tearing down stereotypes perpetuated for decades through various forms of media. \nUsing her feature film Rustic Oracle as a case study\, Sonia Bonspille Boileau will discuss the use of fiction to tell the truth and the importance of reclaiming Indigenous narratives to help reshape our collective memory. \nSonia Bonspille Boileau is a bilingual Kanienkeha:ka and Québécois filmmaker who has been working with Nish Media for the past decade to bring Indigenous content to the screen for viewers of all cultural backgrounds. Some of her documentary credits include Last Call Indian\, The Oka Legacy\, Wapikoni\, and Skindigenous. In 2015\, Sonia wrote and directed her first feature film\, Le Dep. Her second feature film\, Rustic Oracle\, has already received praises on the festival circuit and was just released in theatres. \nThis event is part of the Spirituality as Land\, Story and Relation series presented by the Department of Theological Studies with the support of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

SUMMARY:Double Bill: Dark Red by: Willow Cioppa & Cry Baby by: Kalale Dalton-Lutale
DESCRIPTION:For the first time ever\, Black Theatre Workshop & Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal will be presenting 2 one-act plays in a special Double Bill presentation at the MAI (Montréal\, arts interculturels). BTW places the spotlight on two of our Artist Mentorship Program playwright alumni’s recent work. \nAbout Dark Red by Willow Cioppa \nCalliope is a young woman on the cusp of a complete meltdown. Alone in her apartment\, she writes a single letter addressing every man she’s ever fucked\, blurring them all together to create one beast\, representative of all her trauma. Addressing this man in a vulgar\, crass\, and brutally honest text\, Calliope unravels her experiences of heartache and abuse\, searching for closure in songs\, books\, memories\, and liquor. Dark Red is a viscous\, textural exploration of what it means to lick our own wounds and heal ourselves\, moving past our brokenness and reclaiming our pain in order to move forward. \nAbout Cry Baby by Kalale Dalton-Lutale. \nSo you have these memories\, right? And they’re all sort of hanging above your head like a tangled mobile. Pieces of songs that remind you of your dad in college\, the smell of chlorine\, your mother’s hand writing\, a card you made for your sister. \nIn Kalale Dalton-Lutale’s Cry baby we watch as a young woman unravels. Relying on her personal archive as source material\, Dalton-Lutale’s (2016) work offers the audience a non-linear piece of theatre. By resurrecting the archive\, she unveils the framework of love that has shaped her into the person she is today. Prompted by falling in love for the first time\, the playwright reflects on her own Blackness\, family\, and womanhood. Cry baby asks us “how can we be whole when a part of us is missing?”

SUMMARY:Mile End Poets' Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:Mile End Poets’ Festival will return in 2019! Watch this space for updates. \nMore information on MEPF can be found here.  \n* \nThe Mile End Poets’ Festival is a multidisciplinary arts festival focusing on literature in performance. Its goal was to present in a single local festival a range of the exciting artistic activity regularly taking place in and around Montreal’s Mile End district. The district is home to a huge number of poets\, musicians\, writers\, dancers and performers. \nThe festival was founded in 2010 by Montreal poet\, performer and curator Ian Ferrier\, with help from writer/performers Moe Clark and Kaie Kellough. In its first year it was entirely artist-funded. It presented four nights of programming\, each curated by a different artist or poet from the Mile End. This has been the model ever since. The festival now regularly receives much needed support from both the Canada Council for the Arts and the Quebec Writers’ Federation. It presents work from multiple artistic communities with links to work by First Nations\, literary and performance poetry artists\, contemporary dancers\, top artists from the city and elsewhere in Canada\, and musicians who both tour internationally and regularly work in the neighbourhood’s exciting performance venues. \nIn 2017\, Ian Ferrier was joined by Northern Irish poet & performer Rachel McCrum as Administrative Director for the Festival.
