WORDPLAY is a writing play group\, a time in your week reserved for you — a time to connect with the wonder that lies at the heart of words and where they can take us. \nFor a period of six weeks we will meet for two hours of writing projects and prompts designed to welcome the unexpected\, the spontaneous\, and the serendipitous\, culminating in an evening of readings on the last night. \nWhether you are a poet\, a fiction or non-fiction writer\, an aspiring writer\, a musician or a visual or performance artist\, or simply someone who loves the joy of words\, or even scrabble\, boggle or crossword puzzles\, this is an opportunity to entertain what it means to revel\, gambol and cut loose with language. \nWorkshop leader: Carolyn Boll\nA trained dancer\, and recipient of several Canada Council and Quebec multi-media and choreography grants\, author Carolyn Boll is a graduate of The Humber School for Writers. Her poems and short stories have appeared in Lavender Review\, The Gay & Lesbian Review\, and Mayday Magazine\, and her non-fiction writing has appeared in The Dance Current and The Montreal Gazette. Her first book\, a playful partnering between poetry\, image and dance\, is called Social Dance A Book of Ballroom Poetry and was published by Sally Jane Books\, the specialty imprint of indie publisher Headmistress Press.

Hosted by Helen Chau Bradley\, the book club meetings take place every two months\, and are open to the public. \nOn Thursday\, August 1st\, 2019\, we’ll assemble at the Petite Librairie Drawn + Quarterly (176 Bernard O.) at 7 PM to talk about Ling Ma’s Severance. Join us for discussion and drinks! \nSEVERENCE\nCandace Chen\, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower\, is devoted to routine. With the recent passing of her Chinese immigrant parents\, she’s had her fill of uncertainty. She’s content just to carry on: She goes to work\, troubleshoots the teen-targeted Gemstone Bible\, watches movies in a Greenpoint basement with her boyfriend. \nSo Candace barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York. Then Shen Fever spreads. Families flee. Companies cease operations. The subways screech to a halt. Her bosses enlist her as part of a dwindling skeleton crew with a big end-date payoff. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a reading by four wonderful LGBTQIA+ authors! We’ll have copies of their books available for sale and signing\, as well. \nOur lineup:\nTrebor Healey is most recently the author of Falling\, a short story collection in which characters lose their way\, figuratively and literally\, and confront the profound displacement of modern life. He is the recipient of a Lambda Literary award\, two Publishing Triangle awards and a Violet Quill award. He is the author of three novels\, A Horse Named Sorrow\, Faun and Through It Came Bright Colors; a book of poetry\, Sweet Son of Pan; and two previous collections of stories\, A Perfect Scar and Eros & Dust. He co-edited (with Marci Blackman) Beyond Definition: New Writing from Gay and Lesbian San Francisco and co-edited (with Amie M. Evans) Queer & Catholic. \nMadelaine Caritas Longman is a poet and essayist living in Montreal. Her work has appeared in Room\, filling station\, Lemon Hound\, and Prism. Her first book\, The Danger Model\, was released this fall from McGill-Queen’s University Press. \nFelice Picano is the author of more than thirty books of poetry\, fiction\, memoirs\, nonfiction\, and plays. His work has been translated into many languages and several of his titles have been national and international bestsellers. He is considered a founder of modern gay literature along with the other members of the Violet Quill. Picano also began and operated the SeaHorse Press and Gay Presses of New York for fifteen years. His first novel was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Since then he’s been nominated for and/or won dozens of literary awards. Picano teaches at Antioch College\, Los Angeles. \nNicola Sibthorpe is Montreal born\, and has recently completed an MA in Creative Writing at Concordia University\, focusing on the creation of identity through the intersections of neuro-divergenece and queerness. In 2017\, she was the inaugural winner of the Quebec Young Writers Award\, and has otherwise been published in Headlights\, QWF Writes\, and Carte-Blanche.
