Continuing their mandate to encourage dialogue\, the company will hold post-show talkbacks on March 16\, 22\, 24 and 29. An evolving\, interactive installation of visual art will be in the lobby complementing the production. Mature content—ages 13+. \nCounter Offence is a collision of virtues. Shazia\, an Indo-Québecoise woman with traditional Muslim parents\, is in an abusive relationship with her husband Shapoor\, an Iranian facing immigration issues. What happens when the fight against racism comes into conflict with the struggle to end violence against women? Working backwards through flashbacks\, the intersection of the two is explored. The consequences of gender versus race force us to question our own prejudices and motivations. \nReflecting the streets of Montreal\, the talented\, culturally diverse cast is Maureen Adelson\, Amena Ahmad\, Michael Briganti\, Davide Chiazzese\, Alida Esmail\, Minoo Gundevia\, Amir Sám Nakhjavani and Arun Varma. \nFrom playwright Rahul Varma: “Whenever I spoke to peers about the play’s themes\, their usual comment was: ‘This happens a lot in your community\, doesn’t it?’ From what I knew\, yes it did. But I was surprised they didn’t ask the same question of themselves. According to available statistics and cultural evidence\, domestic violence occurs in the white community just as it does in the South Asian community\, and perhaps more often. I was perturbed by the dichotomy that Canadians perceive spousal abuse as a crime if the perpetrator is a white male\, but a cultural value if he is a person of colour. Throughout the writing process I was confronted with issues of race\, multiculturalism and gender. DESCRIPTION:The Atwater Poetry Project is delighted to present readings and conversation with CANISIA LUBRIN\, KLARA DU PLESSIS\, and MONIKA RINCK on Sunday\, March 29.\nThe event is FREE and everyone is welcome. Books by the poets will be for sale (cash only). This is a co-presentation with Goethe-Institut Montreal and VERSe Ottawa. Hosted by Rachel McCrum. \n* \nThe reading will take place in the Atwater Library and Computer Centre auditorium\, which is located on the second floor\, up two flights of stairs. Unfortunately\, the library doesn’t have an elevator (but it’s coming in June 2020…). There is a single-stall gender-neutral washroom and a multi-stall women’s washroom both next to the auditorium. \nAtwater Poetry Project is committed to being a safer space and anti-oppression space. We ask all guests to be respectful and non-discriminatory toward others within the reading space and in the Library where the series is located. DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, the IMAGINATION 2020 FESTIVAL HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO REGULATIONS SURROUNDING THE COVID-19 SITUATION.\nModerated by Alison Brunette \nNotewordy Concert\nFor the second year in a row\, QWF’S Writers Out Loud series joins forces with the Morrin Centre and the Orchestre symphonique de Quebec (OSQ) to present a “notewordy” concert. Susan Doherty\, Tess Liem\, and Lindsay Nixon all won QWF prizes in November 2019 for their works of nonfiction and poetry. Tune into their stories\, which are accompanied by music—performed and chosen by the OSQ’s string quartet—that captures the spirit of these prize-winning books. \nAbout the Authors\n \nEducated at Concordia University and Ryerson\, Susan Doherty has worked at Maclean’s Magazine and the International Herald Tribune and has run her own advertising production company for 20 years. After 28 long years in Toronto she returned to Montreal and wrote her debut novel\, A Secret Music (2015). Research for her novel led her to the Douglas Hospital and ten extraordinary years as a volunteer with people suffering from extreme psychosis. The Ghost Garden is the culmination of her work in the excavation of mental illness. Susan’s affiliations include: the YMCA\, the Douglas Institute\, the Royal Conservatory of Music\, the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, and Nazareth House\, a shelter for the homeless and addicted. \n \nTess Liem’s writing has appeared in Plenitude\, Room Magazine\, The Boston Review\, Best Canadian Poetry 2018 and 2019\, the Montreal Review of Books and elsewhere. Her debut collection Obits. (Coach House) was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award and won the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award as well as the A.M. Klein Prize in 2019. Nixon won the prestigious 2019 Dayne Ogilive Prize and the 2019 Concordia University First Book Prize\, and has been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award\, an Indigenous Voices Literary Award and several National Magazine Awards. Namely\, Nixon was nominated as the lead editor for the summer 2017 issue of Canadian Art in the “Best Editorial Package” category—an issue on the theme of “Kinship.” They currently hold the position of Editor-at-Large for Canadian Art and previously edited mâmawi­-âcimowak\, an independent Indigenous art\, art criticism\, and literature journal. DESCRIPTION:Join us at la Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly for our Young Readers book club\, hosted by Caleb! This month’s pick is the graphic novel The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag. Pizza will be served. All attendees must have the assigned book\, or one book in the assigned series. \nThis is a book club for young readers\, with a median age of 10-12 or fifth\, sixth and sec 1 grades. Younger kids are welcome if the book is appropriate\, but not younger than 8-9\, please. There will be a different book every meeting. The focus is to provide tweens a safe space to learn to discuss and express thoughts and ideas about literature among their peers without parents or teachers. Please note we do not have the space to have parents and kids!
