SUMMARY:Writers Read x Iman Mersal
DESCRIPTION:On November 6th\, 2023 at 7pm\, author Iman Mersal will be at Concordia University for a live reading of  her poetry and a panel discussion. She will read her poetry in Arabic\, its original language\, and it will then be read in English by a panelist.  \n\n\n\nCurrently Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Alberta\, she is the author of five books of Arabic poetry\, selections from which have been translated into numerous languages. In English translation\, her poems have appeared in The New Republic\, The New York Review of Books\, Parnassus\, Paris Review\, and The Nation\, among others. The Threshold\, a selection of Mersal’s work translated into English by Robyn Creswell\, was published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux in 2022\, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Griffin Poetry Prize. Mersal is the recipient of the 2021 Sheikh Zayed Book Award in Literature for her creative nonfiction work Traces of Enayat. Robin Moger’s translation of Traces was published by And Other Stories (UK)\, in August 2023. \n\n\n\nA panel discussion with scholars and writers Alexei Perry Cox and Emma Haraké will follow. \n\n\n\nWriters Read is part of Concordia University’s Creative Writing program and is supported by the Department of English and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Writers Read\, directed by Professor Sina Queyras since 2011\, invites renowned and emerging authors\, both Canadian and international\, to read from and discuss their work with students and local audiences. In addition to readings\, the series includes Master Classes and professional developmental activities spanning the school year. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all.

They’ll be there to take on any writing request you may have\, from writing business letters to love letters and everything in between. SUMMARY:Encore Poetry Project: Launch of Polyphony
DESCRIPTION:November 9\, 2023\, 7:00 pmCardinal Cocktails et vins5326 St. Laurent Blvd.\, Montreal\n\n\n\nEncore Books and the Encore Poetry Project would like to invite you to the launch of our first poetry anthology. \n\n\n\nThe Encore Poetry Project is an interdisciplinary community-focused project that seeks to highlight the poetry\, short fiction\, visual artworks\, and music of local Montreal/Tiohtià:ke writers and artists of all ages and backgrounds. Working in collaboration with Encore Books in NDG\, the Encore Poetry Project displays poems in the bookstore window\, as well as working closely with artist Alex O’Neill providing visual art inspired by each poem. At this time all submissions for written work are in English. \n\n\n\nWe have been working towards publishing an anthology of poems and art\, so we are very pleased to announce the inaugural event of the Encore Poetry Project and the launch of our anthology Polyphony. \n\n\n\nThe launch will take place on Thursday\, November 9th at 7pm at Cardinal Cocktails & Vins. \n\n\n\nOur doors will open at 7 PM for a literary expo\, where numerous Montreal-based journals will display their publications alongside ours. Our artist Alex O’Neill will be present selling prints associated with each of the anthology’s poems; proceeds from the prints will go directly to our published poets and the artist himself. There will also be live music\, delicious cocktails\, and a complimentary charcuterie board\, courtesy of the Cardinal. \n\n\n\nReadings by our published poets will begin around 8:30 PM. \n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased in advance for $12\, or at the doors for $15. There is the option to reserve a copy of the anthology\, as well as the option to save a few dollars and purchase your ticket and a copy of the anthology as a bundle.

The book we will be discussing is The Sleeping Car Porter (2022) by Suzette Mayr\, winner of the 2022 Giller Prize. The Sleeping Car Porter brings to life an important part of Black history in North America\, from the perspective of a queer man living in a culture that renders him invisible in two ways.
