He worked professionally for 23 years at the CLSC NDG/Benny Farm as Community Organizer and was made a member of La Societe des Grands Citoyens by the CDN/NDG Borough in 2013. He worked as well with the McGill Middle East Program in Peace Building and Civil Society. He has published two chapbooks of poetry—Crossings in 2016 (Iron Rabbitt Bindery) and Pensions in 2019 (Snow Press)—with a third\, Long Time Coming\, due in 2027. In 2015\, he co-founded and ran Speakup: The Montreal Interactive Poetry Exchange until 2022\, and he co-founded The 2 Susans Poetry Circle\, now in its eleventh year. \n\n \n\nThe Readers\n \nPeter Richardson is the author of four collections of poetry. His most recent book is Bit Parts for Fools (Goose Lane Editions\, 2013). Sympathy for the Couriers (Véhicule Press\, 2007) won QWF’s 2008 A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry. His poems have been in Poetry\, The Sonora Review\, The Fiddlehead and The Malahat Review among others. He recently finished a fifth manuscript\, titled\, Tiara of Fish Heads. A former airport worker at both Mirabel and Trudeau Airports\, he lives in Montreal (Tiohtia:ke). \n\n \n\nJanet Torge lives in Montreal and is always looking for new adventures. She’s been a television documentary producer\, a prenatal teacher\, overnight talk-show host at CFCF Radio\, traffic reporter and Radio Noon host at CBC Montreal\, columnist at the Montreal Gazette\, and co-founder of the first rape relief centre in Canada. She recently trained as a Death Doula and is also the author of Dear Sam\, a book about the death of her son\, and I Can’t Believe I’m Old: Essays on Aging\, published in May by Linda Leith Publishing. \n\n \n\nDorothy W. Williams\, Ph.D.\, specializes in Black Canadian history. She has authored books and contributed to scholarly and academic publications. In 2006\, she established Blacbiblio.com Inc. to create a comprehensive record of their historical presence in the country. Then in 2016\, she launched the bilingual ABC’s of Canadian Black History Kit to facilitate the teaching of Canada’s unknown Black history. With her unique historical knowledge\, Dr. Williams has consulted on films\, plays\, tv documentaries\, and radio productions. She has acquired 20+ years of work in community development\, and decades as a volunteer archivist within the community. Her Sankofa Archives and Collection is now the foundation of her research in history\, identity and race\, art history\, gender\, family\, history of medicine\, biography\, community development\, entrepreneurship\, and education. Dr. Williams is a retired professor from Concordia University’s Loyola College for Diversity and Sustainability. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Louise Abbott\nAlice Zorn has published three novels: Arrhythmia (NeWest Press\, 2011)\, Five Roses (Dundurn Press\, 2016)\, and Colours in Her Hands (Freehand Books\, 2024). Five Roses was shortlisted for the 2017 Ontario Library Association Evergreen Award\, as well as translated into French as Le rosier de la Pointe. Colours in Her Hands was selected as the featured title for the 2025 One Book\, One Community program in Athabasca. Her collection of short stories\, Ruins & Relics\, was a finalist for the 2009 McAuslan Quebec Writers’ Federation First Book Prize. Her most recent book of short fiction\, Mind the Gap\, was published by NeWest Press in 2026. She has twice placed first in Prairie Fire’s Fiction Contest and won the 2013 Manitoba Magazine Award for Fiction. She participated in the Banff Writing Studio\, and was both a mentee (2004) and a mentor (2015) in the Quebec Writers’ Federation Mentorship Program. Are you looking for a way to share your work with a wider audience? \nJoin us for this Lunch & Learn about EnRoute\, a bilingual storytelling app developed by the Regional Development Network (RDN) to connect locals and tourists with the artists\, places\, and landmarks at the heart of Quebec’s cultural heritage. \nEnRoute is currently accepting submissions from writers and artists who wish to showcase their stories from the regions of Quebec on the app. This is an opportunity for you to promote your work while also highlighting your connections to Quebec’s English-speaking community. \nIn this hour-long session\, RDN’s Culture and Tourism Agent Walter Willett will provide an overview of EnRoute\, including a tour of the app. He will also explain how artists and writers can contribute their stories to it. A Q&A with the audience will follow. \nFree and open to all. She won the 2025 Commonwealth Short Story Prize\, which she was also longlisted for in 2022. Chanel is also the winner of the 2021 CBC Nonfiction Prize and the 2022 CBC Short Story Prize\, was named one of CBC Books 30 Writers to Watch in 2022\, and was the recipient of QWF’s 2022 Mairuth Sarsfield Mentorship. Layaway Child (House of Anansi)—a short story collection exploring Caribbean immigrant experiences\, especially those of girlhood—is her first book. Nigel Thomas is a Vincentian-Canadian\, a retired professor of United States literature\, and the coordinator and a co-founder of Lectures Logos Readings. He’s also the author of numerous essays and fifteen books. His novel A Different Hurricane was shortlisted for the 2026 OCM Bocas Prize for fiction. Spirits in the Dark (1993) and No Safeguards (2015) were shortlisted for the Hugh MacLennan Fiction Prize. His short story collection Des vies cases was shortlisted for the Carbet des lycéens award. His awards include the Canada Council John Molson Prize for the Arts (2022) and the Quebec Writers’ Federation Judy Mappin Community Award (2021). \n \n\nPhoto: Tim Chin\nNantali Indongo is the host-producer of The Bridge on CBC Radio One\, which airs across the province from 3-4 p.m. on Saturdays and is also available on demand on CBC Listen and on SIRIUS XM. The one-hour program profiles the dreamers shaping arts and culture; delving into personal stories\, and hot topics in the milieu with a guest’s curated selection of music. Born and raised in Montreal\, Nantali started her career at CBC Quebec in 2010 as a writer-broadcaster and researcher with all of the current affairs programs\, eventually becoming a radio producer. In March 2016\, she produced the multi-platform series Real Talk on Race\, which won local and national awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association. In 2019\, Nantali won the Best Radio Host award at the Dynastie Gala. Her growth as a broadcaster led to opportunities to host other National Radio One and CBC Music programs as well as contribute to various Radio-Canada programs. Most recently\, Nantali produced an internal 5 episode podcast series about inclusive work in journalism. An active community volunteer\, she served for many years as Townshippers’ Association’s Chair of Community and Culture and has sat on the boards of The Townships Sun\, The Lennoxville & District Women’s Centre\, and Townshippers Foundation. She was editor-in-chief of Taproot: Poetry\, Prose\, and Images from the Eastern Townships\, five literary anthologies featuring the work of regional creatives. Her writing has appeared in local\, regional\, and national magazines\, newsletters and newspapers\, online\, and in Quebec-based anthologies. Her debut novel\, No Wrong Seasons\, was published by Inanna Publications in Toronto in 2025. \n\n \n\nJosh Quirion is a French-Canadian writer from the Eastern Townships of Quebec. He holds an M.A. in English Literature and Creative Writing from Concordia University. He is the co-founder and first editor-in-chief of yolk literary magazine. He is the author of two short story collections\, Towners & Other Stories (Shoreline Press\, 2020) and Homebound (Shoreline Press\, 2025)\, which is longlisted for the 2026 Leacock Medal for Humour. Quirion’s writing has also appeared in The Malahat Review\, Prairie Fire\, The Antigonish Review\, Funicular Magazine\, Guernica Editions’ anthology Chronicling the Days\, and others. He currently lives in Montreal\, Quebec\, but is strategically plotting a return to his beloved Townships. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Vito DeFilippo\nLouise Abbott is a non-fiction writer\, photographer\, and documentary filmmaker in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. She is the illustrator of Nelly Arcan’s L’enfant dans le miroir and Heather O’Neill’s Valentine in Montreal. Her comics have appeared in Hazlitt\, Exclaim!\, Canadian Geographic\, and The Montreal Gazette. She has created animated videos for many outlets\, including CBC. A regular contributor to Radio-Canada’s Il restera toujours la culture\, she is one half of the Bookstagram page @ONeillReads. Her graphic novel Opioids and Organs is coming out in May 2026 with Drawn & Quarterly. \n\n\n\n\nHeather O’Neill\nHeather O’Neill is a novelist\, short-story writer\, and essayist. Her most recent novel is The Capital of Dreams. SUMMARY:Belonging: Who Really Belongs in Quebec?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held in partnership between the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival and the Quebec Writers’ Federation. \nIn keeping with the theme of this edition of the Festival\, ‘Words to Understand Each Other\,’ two gripping and passionate discussions about Québécois identity and who can claim it. Two consecutive and uninterrupted discussions in English and French. \nFirst discussion: What does it mean to be a Québécois? Is being born here enough? Whatever success you may have here\, however many generations you are removed from those who arrived here\, are you ever fully accepted as l’un des nôtres? Last year\, author Kim Thúy suffered dramatic backlash after speaking out about the injustice she has witnessed—and experienced—in spite of being widely lauded as an iconic author in francophone Quebec. Award-winning journalist Toula Drimonis has written movingly about the challenges for immigrants and their descendants in Quebec\, both in her column in The Gazette and in her 2023 book We\, the Others (Nous\, les autres\, translated to French by Mellisa Verreault). Be a fly on the wall as they share their ideas about where Quebec is on this issue\, and where it might be going. \nSecond discussion: Immigrants or those who are considered “outsiders” have had to face the different challenges of trying to make Quebec their home. Over time\, they have begun to experience a strong sense of belonging and become fully integrated into their adoptive chez nous. They have subsequently seen changes in Quebec that have made them question that sense of belonging. Writer and director Guy Rex Rodgers transformed Quebec’s linguistic landscape with his book\, What We Choose to Forget\, an account of a three-year tour of his film What We Choose to Remember. A former news director for TC Media\, her byline appears in national and international publications\, with a focus on politics\, social justice\, immigration\, and women’s issues. She currently writes a weekly column for the Montreal Gazette and Cult MTL\, and a monthly for The Walrus. She’s worked in television\, radio\, and print in English\, French and Greek. She was on the advisory board for Use the Right Words\, a national media guide on how to report on sexual violence. In 2022 she published her first book\, We\, the Others: Allophones\, Immigrants\, and Belonging in Canada. Her second book\, Seeking Asylum: Building a Shareable World was published in 2024. \n\n \nKim Thúy a quitté le Vietnam avec les boat people à l’âge de dix ans et s’est installée avec sa famille au Québec. She is very proud of her two daughters\, who are bilingual products of Québec’s public school system. \n\nFrancine Pelletier is a journalist based in Montreal\, Quebec\, Canada and former co-host of CBC’s Fifth Estate (1995-2000). She is the co-founder of a feminist magazine\, La Vie en Rose\, and has written for La Presse\, Le Devoir\, and the Montreal Gazette. \n\nPhoto by Pantea Pezeshkan \nGuy Rex Rodgers arrived in Quebec as a young adult to study at the National Theatre School. He has been a writer\, columnist\, interviewer\, translator\, filmmaker and community activist: founder of the English Language Arts Network (ELAN). In 2015\, he was appointed a companion in l’Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec. In 2020\, Rodgers began filming a series of eight documentaries about waves of immigration\, and how immigrants successfully adapted to Quebec since it adopted the first language laws half a century earlier. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 21\, 20262:00–3:30 pm ETFree\, open to all—register for Zoom link \n\n\n\nLearn about delivering and listening to land acknowledgements in this presentation led by Suzanne Keeptwo. \n\n\n\nLand acknowledgements of today are intended to be an act of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples of the territory upon which non-Indigenous Canadians reside. Yet\, too many iterations are routine and formulaic\, and sorely absent of environmental and social justice initiatives.  \n\n\n\nBeyond simply words\, land acknowledgements are an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous truths\, Canadian realities\, and concepts of relationality. \n\n\n\nIn this Lunch & Learn\, writer Suzanne Keeptwo will highlight essential truths and knowledge for implementing an effective\, Iiving\, breathing land acknowledgement. She will inspire the creation of impactful land acknowledgements intended to raise awareness about connections to\, and responsibilities toward\, the land.   \n\n\n\nThis presentation is free and open to all. Organization leaders and decision-makers are particularly encouraged to join. Those who are responsible for—or conscientious about—the development of meaningful land acknowledgements will understand them as ongoing testaments to reconciliation between all peoples and the Earth. A Q&A period will follow the presentation. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzanne Keeptwo is a professional writer\, editor\, and consultant. From 2006 to 2016\, she was a contributing journalist for the Anishinabek News and has since worked with numerous publishers as a freelance editor. Suzanne also works directly with writers to help develop their manuscripts\, including the soon-to-be published Older Than The Moon (Breakwater Books). Suzanne is the author of We All Go Back to the Land\, The Who\, Why\, and How of Land Acknowledgements (2021). She is now focused on her own creative writing and storytelling.
