SUMMARY:Words & Music: The 2026 Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Prize Finalists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon celebrating Quebec-based performance writers. This event showcases the finalists for the 2026 Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Prize\, which honours excellence among Quebec-based artists working in English in any form of performative writing\, including poetry\, story\, monologue\, hip hop\, dub\, sound poetry\, and experimental or interdisciplinary work. Hosted by poet and Concordia University professor Jason Camlot and featuring the eight finalists of the 2026 Spoken Word Prize: \n\nBarbedWire\nEmma Beko\nSilas James\nB. Lovingkin\nCaitlin Murphy\nTracey Steer\nRomel Sylne\nDeb Vanslet\n\nHow can you participate? Join us in person or online by registering for the Zoom Meeting or watching live on YouTube. You do not have to register if attending in person. Have questions? Send them to info.4@concordia.ca See all the finalists for the 2026 QWF Literary Awards. \nAbout the Performers\nPhoto: Studio Owllix (Kevin Calixte)\nBarbedWire is both a protector and an unveiler of the truth. A social worker and mental health practitioner by day\, they are also a writer\, poet\, and spoken-word performer who follows their artistic whims\, writing about their imagination’s heart flutterings\, weaving together enchanting narratives of radical relating\, community\, ancestry\, love\, trauma\, queerness\, spirituality\, mental health\, and the magical. Their poem “Defending the Sacred Whoredom » was published in Montreal Serai Magazine in June 2026. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Hugo Labrecque\nEmma Beko is a multidisciplinary artist and songwriter whose practice began in music and has expanded into video and literary forms. Born in Budapest to a Peruvian father and raised in Montreal\, she has spent over a decade building a career as a recording and performing artist\, with writing at the heart of her work. While music remains an essential part of her craft\, Emma is now expanding her relationship with language\, exploring poetry and prose as mediums in their own right. Her first poem was recently published\, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her artistic evolution. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Rory Creelman\nBlessed with an unflappable Ontarian twang\, Silas James is a queer and trans writer and literary performer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Part unreliable socialite\, part field researcher\, his work pairs dark humour with unhinged storytelling\, sharp social observation\, and characters hurtling toward collapse. His writing has appeared in carte blanche magazine\, yolk literary\, and soliloquies anthology\, among others. His first play\, We All Died at The Lesbian Bar\, sold out its 2026 Montreal Fringe Festival run and received the Patron’s Choice Award. He loves crosswords\, Jesus\, and Aperol spritzes. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Skye Chevolleau\nBrianna Kormendy-Ramirez (B. Lovingkin) is a spoken word poet of Mexican and Slovak descent\, based in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). A true-hearted word-wielder\, she writes from a place of love and curiosity to heal herself and others. Raised in the border city of Wawiiahtanan Zii Bii (Windsor\, Ontario)\, she found poetry through journaling. She is the founder and host of the Speak-Eves open mic. Her work names what the system steals from us: our ability to rest in each other’s presence. She hopes to invite people to feel deeply\, reclaim their voice\, and remember that we are each other’s greatest legacy. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Emelia Hellman\nMontreal-based writer and performer\, Caitlin Murphy has written and directed plays\, short films\, a web series (Mothers Try)\, launched a podcast (You May Be Feeling)\, and performed stand-up\, sketch\, and spoken word.  She won a Montreal English Theatre award for Outstanding Direction for Small Mouth Sounds (Segal Centre) and the QWF Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Prize for a piece about screaming at her children.  Caitlin’s one-woman show Terrible Fish premiered at the Toronto Fringe last year and has since been performed in Montreal\, Halifax and St. John’s.  She’s currently creating a podcast about teaching and recording music with her brother. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Oliver Gravel\nTracey Steer is a writer\, art muse\, and raconteuse whose work has appeared in Today’s Parent\, Reader’s Digest\, and on her former blog\, Grumble Girl. She is the current guest-editor for Galaxy Brain\, an online zine for writers and creators. Her miniatures and paper collages were shown in a two-artist vernissage at Victoria Hall in 2023. An emerging spoken-word performer\, she hosts regular salons for conversation and connection at her Montreal art studio. Born in Jamaica and raised in Toronto\, the eleven-foot-tall cultural curator now lives in Westmount. \n\n \n\nPhoto: NOC Photography\nRomel Sylne Jr. is an award-winning Haitian American poet\, author\, spoken-word artist\, and creative based in Montreal. Through poetry and storytelling\, his work explores identity\, fatherhood\, love\, grief\, immigration\, faith\, and the quiet work of becoming. His writing is rooted in vulnerability and the belief that our stories can create connection\, healing\, and understanding. Romel is the author of six poetry collections\, with the most recent being Keep the Light On for Me\, and continues to bring his words beyond the page through performances\, workshops\, and his upcoming one-man poetry show\, i.am.the.rain. \n\n \n\nPhoto: Liz Miller\nDeb Vanslet is a Montreal storyteller\, writer\, and media artist. She is the general manager of Confabulation\, Montreal’s live storytelling show\, and has been performing since 2010.  Deb has also performed at Yarn\, Vancouver Story Slam\, Confabulation Victoria\, The Morrin Center\, and PBS’s Stories from the Stage.  Deb produced and hosted Dykes on Mykes\, at CKUT 90.3 FM for 16 years. In 2015\, Deb won QWF’s carte blanche Prize for her short story “Self-Serve.” “Ghost Station” was published in the Queer Perspectives 2018 edition of The Malahat Review. In 2023\, Deb won the Ian Ferrier Spoken Word prize. \n\n \n\nThe QWF Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Prize is named in honour of the inimitable Ian Ferrier. Widely considered a pillar of literary performance in Montreal\, Ian was a past president of QWF and the founder of the Words and Music Show\, Montreal’s longest-running spoken word\, poetry\, literature\, performance\, and music show.\n
