SUMMARY:Mona Awad and Chris Boucher Double Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us August 15th for the double launch of Mona Awad’s Bunny and Chris Boucher’s Big Giant Floating Head! \nAbout Bunny:\nSamantha Heather Mackey couldn’t be more of an outsider in her small\, highly selective MFA program at New England’s Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people\, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort–a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other “Bunny\,” and seem to move and speak as one.\nBut everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies’ fabled “Smut Salon\,” and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door–ditching her only friend\, Ava\, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies’ sinister yet saccharine world\, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus “Workshop” where they conjure their monstrous creations\, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon\, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision. \nAbout Big Giant Floating Head:\nAfter his wife announces on Twitter that she’s leaving him\, Christopher’s life in small-town Coolidge just goes from one catastrophe to another. He contracts a strange illness that divides him in half\, undergoes a failure competition\, and is driven to join a cult called The Unloveables. How did it all get this bad? How can he regain his bearings\, and find meaning and love once again?\nHeartfelt and riotously imaginative\, Big Giant Floating Head is the daring\, dazzling account of a man’s struggle with love\, loss and redemption.

SUMMARY:Storytelling is a Love Language
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is a Love Language (First Edition): brought to you by the South Asian Youth Collective \nDespite the increasing role of technology in our lives\, we continue to live for storytelling! Stories tell us who we are\, where we come from\, and bring meaning and excitement to our lives. Storytelling was the way in which our ancestors were able to pass down knowledge\, history and wisdom. Each one of us has an infinite number of stories within us\, and we tell stories every day\, even if we don’t think we do. \nThis event aims to de-colonialize the act of storytelling and aims to bring people together in order to share an intimate afternoon of sharing and connecting as authentically as possible. \nFor this edition\, we invite storytellers who are people of colour AND identify as women\, non-binary or gender non-conforming. Sign-up at the link below to tell a story\, any story\, between 5 – 8 minutes\, as long as it is on the theme of “Firsts”. Stories do NOT have to be: memorized\, “structured properly”\, follow any rules of English class\, etc. \nTheme: “Firsts”\nThe theme for this edition’s event is “Firsts” (fittingly\, as this is also our first edition of this event!) “Firsts” can come in many different forms: your first heartbreak\, first act of rebellion\, first words\, first period\, first love\, first understandings of feminism\, first time you heard a racial slur\, and so on. You may reflect on this theme in a way that resonates with you\, and we may learn that we hold many stories that were actually “Firsts”. \nTo sign up as a storyteller\, please fill out the following (brief) form:\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIE0F8BnR1mWwJy_xva4bLbBo2XSGE260O_R5vbSuGLvKqbw/viewform?usp=sf_link \n(there will be a limited number of spots for sign-up at the door) \nContent of oppressive nature (racist\, sexist\, transphobic\, homophobic\, ableist\, classist\, etc.) will not be tolerated at this event. \nIf you have any questions\, please feel free to e-mail sawccyouth@gmail.com. \nAccessibility: This space is not wheelchair accessible. There are steps to get into the building\, from there you can take the elevator to the third floor. \nCost: Pay what you can

SUMMARY:Breathing Space/Reprendre Son Souffle
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Space is a summer evening series for short readings and performances in any language. In-progress\, experimental\, or unfinished work is welcome\, new collaborative work is enthusiastically encouraged\, trying things out is invited. What we hope is to create room to be unsure and that be okay. \nThere will be a mix of scheduled readers\, and six sign-up spots available on the day. Readings will be approximately 5 minutes. On a hâte!

SUMMARY:Becky Blake and Nancy Jo Cullen in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of reading and conversation as Becky Blake and Nancy Jo Cullen chat about their latest releases: Proof I Was Here\, and The Western Alienation Merit Badge! \n///////////////////////////////// \nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly recognizes that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. This has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. It is important to think about how each and every one of us has arrived here. SUMMARY:Japan Book Club - Masks
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a good read for the height of summer? The Argo Bookshop\, in conjunction with the JET Alumni Association of Quebec and Atlantic Canada\, will be hosting its summer Japan Book Club on August 29. \nFor this meeting\, we’ll be discussing Masks by Enchi Fumiko\, a highly respected Japanese writer of the mid-20th century. In this novel\, Toganō Mieko takes an increasing interest in the personal affairs of her widowed daughter-in-law\, Yasuko. Devastated by the loss of her son\, she skillfully manipulates the relationships between Yasuko and the two men who are in love with her\, encouraging a dalliance that will have terrible consequences. Meanwhile\, hidden in the shadows\, is Mieko’s disabled daughter\, who has her own role to play in her mother’s bizarre schemes. In Masks\, Enchi has crafted a stunning and understated novel of seduction and infidelity. \nCome for a lively discussion of a thought-provoking piece of Japanese literature by an author less known in North America\, and enjoy some snacks and refreshments! You can read the book in English\, French\, or Japanese. You’re also welcome to come if you haven’t read the book\, but there will likely be spoilers.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Literatures Book Club: This Wound Is a World
DESCRIPTION:The Indigenous Literatures Book Club focuses on work by indigenous writers from around the world. Hosted by Tara McGowan-Ross\, a Mi’kmaq multidisciplinary artist and writer\, the meetings will take place every 4-6 weeks and are open to all. \nFor our September meeting\, we will gather at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Bernard O.) at 7 pm to discuss This Wound Is a World by Billy-Ray Belcourt. \nTHIS WOUND IS A WORLD\nPart manifesto\, part memoir\, This Wound is a World is an invitation to “cut a hole in the sky to world inside.” Billy-Ray Belcourt issues a call to turn to love and sex to understand how Indigenous peoples shoulder sadness and pain like theirs without giving up on the future. His poems upset genre and play with form\, scavenging for a decolonial kind of heaven where “everyone is at least a little gay.” \n**We offer a 20% discount on This Wound is a World from now until the meeting date.**

SUMMARY:Stéphane Larue Launches The Dishwasher
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we launch the much-anticipated English translation of Stéphane Larue’s Le Plongeur: The Dishwasher. \nIt’s winter in Montreal\, 2002\, when a graphic design student’s gambling addiction starts to drag him under. In debt to the metal band that’s commissioned him to draw their album cover and ensnared in lies to his friends and his cousin\, he takes the first job that promises a paycheck: dishwasher at La Trattoria\, a high-end restaurant\, where he finds himself thrust\, on his first night\, into roiling world of characters. A magnificent\, hyperrealist debut\, with a soundtrack by Iron Maiden\, The Dishwasher plunges us into a world in which—for better or for worse—everyone depends on each other. \nSTÉPHANE LARUE\nStéphane Larue was born in Longueuil in 1983. He received a master’s in comparative literature at L’Université de Montréal and has worked in the restaurant industry for the past fifteen years. He lives in Montréal. The Dishwasher is his first book. \nPABLO STRAUSS (Translator)\nPablo Strauss grew up in British Columbia and has lived in Quebec City for over a decade. His translations of Quebec fiction include Daniel Grenier’s The Longest Year (a finalist for the 2016 Governor General’s Literary Award for Translation)\, and Maxime Raymond Bock’s Baloney (Coach House Books\, 2016) and Atavisms (Dalkey Archive Press\, 2015). He has also published shorter translations and reviews in Granta\, Geist\, and The Montreal Review of Books. Pablo has worked as a dishwasher in nine restaurants in three cities. \n〰️️〰️️〰️️ \nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly recognizes that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. This has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. It is important to think about how each and every one of us has arrived here. We are grateful that creating and sharing stories has been a part of this land for thousands of years and we urge you to seek out a story that is different from your own. \n〰️️〰️️〰️️ \nLa Petite Drawn and Quarterly Accessibility information: \n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Billy-Ray Belcourt Launches NDN Coping Mechanisms
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the launch of Billy-Ray Belcourt’s latest book: NDN Coping Mechanisms! \nIn the follow-up to his Griffin Poetry Prize–winning collection\, This Wound is a World\, Billy-Ray Belcourt aims more of an anthropological eye at the contours of NDN and queer social worlds to spot much that is left unsaid when we look only to the mainstream media. In this genre-bending work\, Belcourt employs poetry\, poetics\, prose\, and textual art to illuminate the rogue possibilities bubbling up everywhere NDNs are. \nNDN Coping Mechanisms: Notes from the Field emerges out of a form of auto/ethnographic sensibility that is at turns campy and playful\, jarring and candid\, displaying\, once again\, the writer’s extraordinary craft\, guile\, audacity\, and the sheer dexterity of his imagination. \n〰️️〰️️〰️️ \nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly recognizes that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Cox\, Midwest Book Review \nAfter positive results from early promotion in the US and UK including various nominations\, author Nataly Restokian is looking forward to the hometown launch of her first novel\, Masks. But at what cost? Against all odds\, Restokian rose to the top before giving it all up and moving to Montreal for a chance at genuine happiness and personal truth. \nPlease join her for the launch of her first novel\, Masks\, on Tuesday\, September 10\, for readings\, a Q&A and refreshments. \nWhat people are saying about Masks:\nForeword Reviews 2018 INDIES Book of the Year award\, finalist- Multicultural (Adult Fiction).\nwww.goodreads.com/book/show/39805939-masks \nCheck out www.natalyrestokian.com/news-and-reviews for reviews\, interviews and blog tour. \nYou can read excerpts from the book here:\nwww.amazon.com/Masks-Nataly-Restokian/dp/1773708104#reader_B07BB6RMDS \n

SUMMARY:True Reads Book Club: Three Women
DESCRIPTION:Come discuss the most interesting books in new Non-Fiction with our True Reads book club! Happening every 4-6 weeks hosted by a charming member of the Drawn & Quarterly staff. \nFor our SEPTEMBER meeting\, we’ll be reading Three Women by Lisa Taddeo. The book club will meet at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly\, 176 Bernard Ouest at 7pm. La Petite’s Arizona O’Neil will be hosting! \nTHREE WOMEN\nIt thrills us and torments us. It controls our thoughts\, destroys our lives\, and it’s all we live for. Yet we almost never speak of it. And as a buried force in our lives\, desire remains largely unexplored—until now. Over the past eight years\, journalist Lisa Taddeo has driven across the country six times to embed herself with ordinary women from different regions and backgrounds. The result\, Three Women\, is the deepest nonfiction portrait of desire ever written and one of the most anticipated books of the year. \nBased on years of immersive reporting\, and told with astonishing frankness and immediacy\, Three Women is a groundbreaking portrait of erotic longing in today’s America\, exposing the fragility\, complexity\, and inequality of female desire with unprecedented depth and emotional power. It is both a feat of journalism and a triumph of storytelling\, brimming with nuance and empathy\, that introduces us to three unforgettable women—and one remarkable writer—whose experiences remind us that we are not alone. \n**We offer a 20% discount on Three Women from now until the meeting date.**
