SUMMARY:Alexandra Pasian and David Tacium Double Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special double launch this July featuring David Tacium and Alexandra Pasian! \nPoetry and prose will be read.\nSnacks will be served.\nWine will be imbibed. \nTaking down the Golden Boy\nBy David Tacium \nA prairie remembrance of things past\, Taking down the Golden Boy is set in and around Winnipeg in the early 1970s. It recounts a fatal attraction between two same-sex 18-year-olds whose strong religious upbringing is both a hindrance and an incentive. \nWhy all the fuss over the Golden Boy? Who is he and what is he out there advertising? The novel explores a dark side of spirituality and male sexuality\, raising an issue that has grown only more troubling with time. Who’d have suspected such queer twists of puritanical Winnipeg? \nDavid Tacium grew up in Winnipeg and now lives in Montreal. He has a PhD in Comparative Literature on dandyism and the crisis of masculine identity in the 19th century. He reads and converses in six languages – English\, French\, Italian\, Spanish\, German and Russian — and is an amateur violinist. \n“Work Until You Find Resistance is Alexandra Pasian’s poetry chapbook. Printed on 70 lb Zephyr Antique Laid by Coach House Printing\, and perfect bound in a cover of Mohawk Via Felt\, with Strathmore Black endpapers. The type was composed in Arno Pro by Adobe. This edition is limited to 150 numbered copies.”\n– junctionbooks.ca \nAlexandra Pasian is a freelance writer living and teaching in Montreal\, Quebec. Among other journals\, her work has appeared in Arc\, CV2\,Event\, and The Fiddlehead. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Concordia University.

SUMMARY:Adrian McKerracher launches What It Means to Write
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Adrian McKerracher launches What It Means to Write: Creativity and Metaphor \nA book launch to celebrate an adventure 7 years in the making\, from Vancouver to Havana to Buenos Aires\, asking\, “What does it mean to be creative?” \nAbout the book:\nAt a time when people must work harder than ever to stand out from the crowd\, the word creativity can seem vague and overused. But what exactly is creativity? \nAdrian McKerracher travels from Vancouver to Havana to Buenos Aires\, leading readers on a journey to discover poignant new insights into a life of letters. Through encounters with artists of all kinds\, famous or obscure\, McKerracher traces a socio-cultural history of the meaning of writing\, each vignette a meditation on the way that metaphor limits and liberates understanding: creativity is a process\, a possession\, a relation\, an algorithm\, a game\, and more. But What It Means to Write is far more than an archive of the figurative. Along the way\, a labyrinth of chance reunites McKerracher with old friends\, threatens him with violence\, and invites him to remain forever in a place both real and imagined. His journey from cafés to libraries to late-night living rooms embodies the structure of a bold new methodology for interpreting creativity\, demonstrating the tools for working productively with ambiguity and rebuilding meaning\, one metaphor at a time. \nTold in character-driven narrative pulses that reflect on the nature of belonging\, understanding\, and loving\, What It Means to Write is a celebration of the possibilities of both language and silence.

SUMMARY:Breathing Space / Reprendre Son Souffle
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Space is a summer evening series for short readings and performances in any language. In-progress\, experimental\, or unfinished work is welcome\, new collaborative work is enthusiastically encouraged\, trying things out is invited. What we hope is to create room to be unsure and that be okay. \nThere will be a mix of scheduled readers\, and six sign-up spots available on the day. Readings will be approximately 5 minutes. \nHosted by Aaron Boothby & Rachel McCrum. On a hâte! \nAnimé par Aaron Boothby & Rachel McCrum

SUMMARY:Staceyann Chin\, Shanice Nicole & Kalmunity @ Suoni Per Il Popolo
DESCRIPTION:Suoni Per Il Popolo\, Protests and Pedagogy & CKUT 90.3FM present: \nWhen listening to Jamaican-born\, Brooklyn-living\, woman-loving\, writer/poet\, political activist\, performance artist and single mama Staceyann Chin\, it’s hard not to be moved by the sound of her voice. Chin’s dynamic cadence has served her well\, whether on stage at New York’s storied spoken-word spot the Nuyorican Cafe\, on Broadway as an original performer on Def Poetry Jam or during any one of her one-woman\, autobiographical shows. \nShanice Nicole is a Black feminist educator\, facilitator\, writer\, and (out)spoken word artist. Her writing and work intimately explores experiences of race\, health\, sexuality\, oppression\, and freedom – all of which form the many layers of her Black womanhood. She believes that everyone has the power to make change and the words of her favourite poet Maya Angelou resonate deeply\, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better\, do better.” \nKalmunity is Canada’s largest and longest running black arts & improv collective of multi-disciplined\, linguistic & cultural creatives boasting a local membership of over 60 creatives that was founded in 2003 by Jahsun & directed by Preach Ankobia. \nwww.suoniperilpopolo.org\nInstagram: @suoniperilpopolo\nTwitter: SuoniPopolo

SUMMARY:Write The Body Electric: A Creative Process Workshop for Writers in All Genres
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leader: Stacey Engels \nCost: $160 for QWF members; $190 for non-members \nCost of QWF membership (annual) plus workshop: $200 \nPayment is due within one week of registration to confirm your spot. Please review our cancellation policy. \nFor more information\, or to register: (514) 933-0878 or workshops@qwf.org \n* \nThis two-session course is open to writers in all genres. \nWhether you have a specific writing goal or are playing with the puzzle pieces of a new project\, this class will provide strategies for developing good work habits\, honing your curiosity and finding inspiration everywhere–without and within. \nOver the two Saturday sessions\, we will learn to find the sweet spot between discipline and freedom. We aim to break the boundaries that stand between us and our true innovative capacities\, and develop the boundaries that safeguard and sustain a regular writing practice. \nIn each session\, we will discuss selected writings in different genres\, drawing on these and non-writing media for inspiration in creative experiments. We will play with colour\, sound\, rhythm\, and form to ignite the senses and expand our understanding of what’s possible in writing\, before diving into prompts and exercises. \nWe will also borrow from meditation techniques to focus our concentration\, explore our preconceptions about time\, and ally ourselves with our bodies as sources of information and inspiration. \nWith practice\, using the techniques shared in this course\, participants will learn to maximize their available time\, bypass the inner critic\, and tap into inspiration\, innovation\, and authenticity every time they sit down to write.

SUMMARY:Saul Williams + Fronds (Kaie Kellough / Jason Sharp) @ Suoni Per Il Popolo
DESCRIPTION:Suoni Per Il Popolo\, Innovations en concert & CKUT 90.3FM present: \nSaul Williams is a rapper\, musician\, poet\, writer\, and actor who engages each of these forms equally\, with both aggression and compassion. He has been breaking ground since his debut album\, Amethyst Rock Star\, was released in 2001. Williams’ endlessly imaginative vision and voice take on a new life in his latest multimedia project MartyrLoserKing\, a modern day parable of a Burundian hacker who sparks a revolution by hacking NASA. While the incarnations and labels of poetry and the arts more generally have metamorphosed over time\, and his own output has bounced between creative spheres\, Williams still prefers to define himself first and foremost as a poet. \nFronds is a collaborative work for multiple instruments and voices. It is an acoustic and electronic sound processor with large-format\, projected typographic design. Borrowing from ecopoetics and text collage\, this work expresses deep concern for the state of our planet and the precariousness of our existence. \nfeaturing:\nKaie Kellough – Voice\nTanya Evanson – Voice\nJason Sharp – Bass Saxophone & Electronics\nJoe Grass – Pedal Steel Guitar\nStefan Schneider – Drum Kit\nKevin Lo – Visual Design \nKaie Kellough and Jason sharp have collaborated since 2011. They have performed internationally in experimental music\, literary\, and jazz milieus. Their work embraces a maximalist sprawl across forms\, engaging disparate ideas and reconciling contradictions. Kellough-Sharp incorporate visual projections with oft-unreadable text\, electronic with acoustic sound\, improvisation with composition\, and performative immediacy with noisome abstraction. \nwww.suoniperilpopolo.org\nInstagram: @suoniperilpopolo\nTwitter: SuoniPopolo

SUMMARY:Irreversible Entanglements @ Suoni Per Il Popolo
DESCRIPTION:Suoni Per Il Popolo & CKUT 90.3FM present \nIrreversible Entanglements: A Philadelphia free-jazz poetry band that came together in 2015 to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality concert. Now an internationally touring phenomenon\, their blend of liberation sounds and direct\, visceral lyrics breathes new life into the legacy of the fusion of poetry and Black music. The dynamic band of exciting\, experimental artists (Keir Neuringer – alto saxophone\, Aquiles Navarro – trumpet\, Luke Stewart – double bass\, Tcheser Holmes – drums) skillfully reacts to poet Camae Ayewa’s (a.k.a. Moor Mother) powerful lyricism. \nTomeka Reid & Moor Mother: Recently described as a “New Jazz Power Source” by the New York Times\, cellist and composer Tomeka Reid emerged as one of the most original\, versatile\, and curious musicians in the Chicago’s bustling jazz and improvised music community over the last decade. Now based in New York\, her distinctive melodic sensibility\, usually braided to a strong sense of groove\, has been featured in many distinguished ensembles over the years. \nA personal and political project with a DIY mindset\, Moor Mother transgresses fictional aesthetic borders between noise\, hip hop and punk rock to create afrofuturist liberation music. \nwww.suoniperilpopolo.org\nInstagram: @suoniperilpopolo\nTwitter: SuoniPopolo
