Hosted by Tara McGowan-Ross\, a Mi’kmaq multidisciplinary artist and writer\, the meetings will take place every 4-6 weeks and are open to all. \nFor our September meeting\, we will gather at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Bernard O.) at 7 pm to discuss This Wound Is a World by Billy-Ray Belcourt. \nTHIS WOUND IS A WORLD\nPart manifesto\, part memoir\, This Wound is a World is an invitation to “cut a hole in the sky to world inside.” Billy-Ray Belcourt issues a call to turn to love and sex to understand how Indigenous peoples shoulder sadness and pain like theirs without giving up on the future. His poems upset genre and play with form\, scavenging for a decolonial kind of heaven where “everyone is at least a little gay.” \n**We offer a 20% discount on This Wound is a World from now until the meeting date.**

DESCRIPTION:Looking for a good read for the height of summer? The Argo Bookshop\, in conjunction with the JET Alumni Association of Quebec and Atlantic Canada\, will be hosting its summer Japan Book Club on August 29. \nFor this meeting\, we’ll be discussing Masks by Enchi Fumiko\, a highly respected Japanese writer of the mid-20th century. In this novel\, Toganō Mieko takes an increasing interest in the personal affairs of her widowed daughter-in-law\, Yasuko. Devastated by the loss of her son\, she skillfully manipulates the relationships between Yasuko and the two men who are in love with her\, encouraging a dalliance that will have terrible consequences. Meanwhile\, hidden in the shadows\, is Mieko’s disabled daughter\, who has her own role to play in her mother’s bizarre schemes. In Masks\, Enchi has crafted a stunning and understated novel of seduction and infidelity. \nCome for a lively discussion of a thought-provoking piece of Japanese literature by an author less known in North America\, and enjoy some snacks and refreshments! You can read the book in English\, French\, or Japanese. You’re also welcome to come if you haven’t read the book\, but there will likely be spoilers.

SUMMARY:Fahner and Drukker Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of poetry by Kim Fahner and Kelly Norah Drukker! These two poets will share their work with us\, and then copies will be available for sale and signing. Light refreshments will also be served. \nKim Fahner was the fourth poet laureate of the City of Greater Sudbury (2016-18)\, and was the first woman to be appointed to the role. She has published four volumes of poetry\, including You Must Imagine the Cold (Scrivener Press\, 1997)\, braille on water (Penumbra Press\, 2001)\, The Narcoleptic Madonna (Penumbra Press\, 2012)\, and Some Other Sky (Black Moss Press\, 2017). She is also a playwright and a novelist. \nKelly Norah Drukker was born in Montreal\, and grew up in the Laurentian region of Quebec. Her first collection of poems\, Small Fires (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2016) won the A.M Klein Prize for Poetry\, the Concordia University First Book Prize\, and was a finalist for the Grand Prix du livre de Montréal. Petits feux\, translated into French by Lori Saint-Martin and Paul Gagné\, was published by Le lézard amoureux in 2018. \nKelly’s poetry and creative non-fiction have appeared in literary journals in Canada\, Ireland\, and New Zealand\, and have won a CBC Literary Award (2006)\, and a Norma Epstein Prize for Creative Writing (2013). Kelly holds a Master’s degree in English and Creative Writing from Concordia University. She currently lives in Montreal\, where she pursues her interests in Irish Studies\, Oral History\, and Creative Writing through the Humanities PhD program at Concordia University.

Stories tell us who we are\, where we come from\, and bring meaning and excitement to our lives. Storytelling was the way in which our ancestors were able to pass down knowledge\, history and wisdom. Each one of us has an infinite number of stories within us\, and we tell stories every day\, even if we don’t think we do. \nThis event aims to de-colonialize the act of storytelling and aims to bring people together in order to share an intimate afternoon of sharing and connecting as authentically as possible. \nFor this edition\, we invite storytellers who are people of colour AND identify as women\, non-binary or gender non-conforming. Sign-up at the link below to tell a story\, any story\, between 5 – 8 minutes\, as long as it is on the theme of “Firsts”. DESCRIPTION:Poet Sina Queyras talks to Jana Prikryl about her new collection\, No Matter. \nJANA PRIKRYL is the author of two books of poems\, No Matter and The After Party\, which was one of The New York Times‘s Best Poetry Books of the Year. Born in the former Czechoslovakia\, she grew up in Canada from the age of six. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker\, The London Review of Books\, The Paris Review\, and The New York Review of Books\, where she is a senior editor and the poetry editor. \nAbout the book:\nAn urgent\, visionary collection of poems from the author of The After Party \n“One of the most original voices of her generation.”—James Wood \nJana Prikryl’s No Matter guides the reader through cities—remembered and imagined—toppling past the point of decline and fall. Conjured by voices alternately ardent\, caustic\, grieving\, but always watchful\, these soliloquies move from free verse through sonnets and invented forms\, insisting that every demolition builds something new and unforeseen.
