SUMMARY:One Poem\, Many Voices: A Workshop on Writing Collaboratively
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is FREE and OPEN TO ALL. Registration is NOT required. \nCollaborating in the creation of a poem connects us deeply with each other. The process is always full of surprises — dynamic\, inventive\, and fun. \nIn collaboration\, we get to see how people really understand our words. They take them up and go places with them\, unexpected places! Through listening and responding\, we open doors we didn’t know were there: doors in our selves\, in our perceptions\, in each other. \nThis workshop engages participants in a variety of approaches to writing poems collaboratively. \nYour workshop guides\, Mary di Michele and Susan Gillis\, have more than a decade of experience in writing poetry collaboratively. In addition to their active individual practices\, they have written and published together as members of Yoko’s Dogs since 2006. Susan’s fourth book of poetry\, Yellow Crane\, appeared in 2018. Mary’s twelfth book and latest collection of poetry\, Bicycle Thieves\, was published with ECW in 2017. \nThis event is taking place on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keha:ka. \nGenerously supported by the Community Cultural Action Fund (CCAF) of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

SUMMARY:Baie-D’Urfé Library Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Burgess\, a QWF member and Montreal author\, will read a few pages from her latest novel The Cacouna Caves and the Doorway to the Golden Planet: Book Two in the Cacouna Saga. The open mic event will take place at the Bibliothèque de Baie-D’Urfé (the Baie-D’Urfé Library) on May 30 at 7:30 PM. \nBurgess’ novel is set in Quebec\, this time in a not-too-distant future age. The first part of the novel is dystopian\, as it deals with a world ravaged by climate change. The second part of the novel is utopian and presents an idealistic vision for the future of humankind and our planet. Her website is www.thecacounacaves.com \nBurgess will participate in the open mic event—along with fellow QWF members Louise Carson and Merryl Hammond—on the West Island on May 30.

SUMMARY:This Way To Egress: Developing a Novel or Memoir Already in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leader: Maya Merrick \nCost: $80 \nPayment is due within one week of registration to confirm your spot. Please review our cancellation policy. \nFor more information\, or to register: (514) 933-0878 or workshops@qwf.org \nPT Barnum billed his “Egress” as a fearsome attraction\, but visitors to his museum found out the truth: The egress was nothing more than the exit. During this workshop\, we’ll do a little truth-seeking of our own to discover what completing a novel or memoir is really all about. We’ll debunk some myths\, allay some fears\, and demystify the process\, turning the thought of finishing a long work from a petrifying prospect to a realistic goal. \nWriting a novel or memoir in isolation can be exhilarating\, but it can also leave you with abandoned drafts\, half-written chapters\, and the sinking feeling that there’s no way out. Gaining insight from unbiased readers—myself and the other members of the group—in a supportive\, creative atmosphere will help you identify issues\, clarify your intent\, and find real ways to improve your manuscript. To this end\, our primary focus will be on the craft of writing. Through exercises and activities\, we’ll pinpoint potential trouble spots and equip you with the tools to address them. \nActivities will be combined with discussions aimed at helping you gain new insight to constructing and completing your novel or memoir. We’ll explore ways to approach characters\, work with point of view (POV) and tense\, create immersive scenes\, and reinforce the structure of your existing manuscript. Because writing a novel or memoir takes as long as it takes\, this workshop is designed to inspire you to finish your manuscript in your own time. \nThis workshop is intended for writers who are looking for guidance and encouragement while working on a novel or memoir already in progress\, so please be prepared to share elements of your work with the group. Ideally\, you’ll have a portion of your novel or memoir already completed\, as well as a solid grasp of the story you’re working on. \nWe’ll be doing writing exercises in pairs or groups\, so be sure to bring a pen and paper with you. Readings and illustrative materials will be provided.

SUMMARY:3GénPo
DESCRIPTION:3GénPo = 3 poets\, 3 generations\, 3 new books // 3 poètes\, 3 générations\, 3 recueils nouveaux \n3GénPo is a prepared poetry book launch and peformance in English with interferences and additions in French by three Montreal poets from 3 generations whose practice is mostly in English: Erín Moure\, whose first book came out in 1979; Kaie Kellough\, whose first book came out in 2005\, and Nicole Raziya Fong\, whose first book just came out in April\, 2019. All their works look critically and humanely at origin\, history\, phenomenology\, thinking\, and being via poetry\, poetry’s sounds\, and via listening to the generations\, in Canada and around the world. They have books but reject the commodification of the author and celebrate the conversations poetries engender. They read together so that their works may accompany each other and join listeners and readers\, at least for one great evening! \nBring cash if you wish to buy poetry books\, please! \n+ \nThis event is part of PUBLISHING SPHERE\, a conference organized by the Canada Research Chair in Digital Textualities\, University of Montreal. \nCet événement fait partie de PUBLISHING SPHERE\, une conférence organisée par la Chaire de recherche du Canada sur les écritures numériques\, l’Université de Montréal.

In-progress\, experimental\, or unfinished work is welcome\, new collaborative work is enthusiastically encouraged\, trying things out is invited. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Susan Doherty's The Ghost Garden
DESCRIPTION:Random House Canada invites you to celebrate the Montreal launch of The Ghost Garden by Susan Doherty.\nBooks will be available for purchase. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.\n\nAbout The Ghost Garden: \nSusan Doherty’s groundbreaking book brings us a population of lost souls\, ill-served by society\, feared\, shunted from locked wards to rooming houses to the streets to jail and back again. For the past ten years\, some of the people who cycle in and out of the severely ill wards of the Douglas Institute in Montreal\, have found a friend in Susan\, who volunteers on the ward\, and then follows her friends out into the world as they struggle to get through their days. \nWith their full cooperation\, she brings us their stories\, which challenge the ways we think about people with mental illness on every page. The spine of the book is the life of Caroline Evans (not her real name)\, a woman in her early sixties whom Susan has known since she was a bright and sunny school girl. Caroline had formed a close friendship with Susan and shared stories from her life; through her\, we experience what living with schizophrenia over time is really like. She has been through it all\, including the way the justice system treats the severely mentally ill: at one point\, she believed that she could save her roommate from the devil by pouring boiling water into her ear… \nSusan interleaves Caroline’s story with vignettes about her other friends\, human stories that reveal their hopes\, their circumstances\, their personalities\, their humanity. She’s found that if she can hang in through the first ten to fifteen minutes of every coffee date with someone in the grip of psychosis\, then true communication results. Their “madness” is not otherworldly: instead it tells us something about how they’re surviving their lives and what they’ve been through. The Ghost Garden is not only touching\, but carries a cargo of compassion and empathy. \nAbout the Author:\nSUSAN DOHERTY is a Montreal writer whose award-winning debut novel\, A Secret Music\, was published in 2015. She worked on staff for Maclean’s\, and freelanced for The International Herald Tribune\, La Tribune de Genève\, and The Independent in London\, and for eighteen years ran her own advertising production company. She has served on the boards of the Royal Conservatory of Music\, the Quebec Writers’ Federation and Nazareth House\, a home for those afflicted by addiction and homelessness. Since 2009\, she has volunteered at the Douglas Institute\, a psychiatric hospital\, working with people living with severe mental illness. She is married to the educator Hal Hannaford\, and has two children.
