SUMMARY:Gay Reads Book Club: Little Fish by Casey Plett
DESCRIPTION:Join the Gay Reads book club to discuss classic and contemporary literature by LGBTQ2IA+ authors. We’ll read across genres to uncover queer sensibilities\, alternative canons\, and exciting new voices. The club meets every two months at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly with host Kathleen Fraser\, and it is open to all. \nAt our inaugural meeting on September 24\, at 7 PM\, we’ll discuss Casey Plett’s Lambda-winning debut novel\, Little Fish. \n**We offer a 20% discount on Little Fish by Casey Plett from now until the meeting date.** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated. \nLITTLE FISH:\nIt’s the dead of winter in Winnipeg and Wendy Reimer\, a thirty-year-old trans woman\, feels like her life is frozen in place. When her Oma passes away Wendy receives an unexpected phone call from a distant family friend with a startling secret: Wendy’s Opa (grandfather) — a devout Mennonite farmer — might have been transgender himself. At first she dismisses this revelation\, but as Wendy’s life grows increasingly volatile\, she finds herself aching for the lost pieces of her Opa’s truth. Can Wendy unravel the mystery of her grandfather’s world and reckon with the culture that both shaped and rejected her? She’s determined to try. \nAlternately warm-hearted and dark-spirited\, desperate and mirthful\, Little Fish explores the winter of discontent in the life of one transgender woman as her past and future become irrevocably entwined.

SUMMARY:Sean Michaels Launches The Wagers
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE:\nThe evening will begin with Sean Michaels reading at Supermarché PA du Parc at 8pm. Book signing will happen immediately after across the street at The Emerald (aka the bar with no name). \n////////// \nJoin us in celebrating the launch of Sean Michaels’ latest novel! \nScotiabank Giller-winner Sean Michaels is back with his widely anticipated second novel\, The Wagers\, a deeply satisfying story of long odds\, magical heists and the dizzying gamble of life. Where does luck come from? What is it worth? And how much of it do you need to be happy? \nTheo Potiris is a grocer and a comedian who never repeats his jokes. After 15 years of open mikes\, he’s still waiting for his break–bicycling to the comedy club at night\, stacking plums at his family’s grand and ramshackle supermarket by day. His girlfriend is halfway around the world\, searching for enlightenment with a patron who happens to be the richest man on Earth\, and when two other loved-ones get struck by bolts from the blue\, Theo decides he can’t keep chasing his old dreams any longer. He resolves to trade his wishes in\, pursuing a bigger score.\nHere Sean Michaels’ novel takes a surprise left turn\, away from the price of milk and into a shabby\, beautiful\, imaginary Montreal where peacocks strut on street corners and gamblers bet on sunny days. Theo uncovers a mysterious association of sports-obsessed mathematicians\, The Rabbit’s Foot\, which is turning probability into riches\, and the vigilante No Name Gang\, who steal luck from those who have taken more than their fair share. Bursting with sheer story-telling pleasure and stylish prose\, The Wagers carries you along on wave after wave of invention–a literary motorcycle chase that soon has you wondering about the randomness of good fortune and all the ways we choose to wage our lives.

SUMMARY:Queer Book Club - Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our latest Queer Book Club! In this session\, we’ll be reading a store favourite\, the multi-award-winning Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. \nAristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool\, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together\, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be. \nWe’re looking forward to a lively discussion of the book\, and we hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:Mona Eltahawy launches Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls
DESCRIPTION:Mona Eltahawy reads from and discusses her new book\, The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls\, a timely manifesto that Booklist recently called “brilliant and electrifying.” In the book\, Eltahawy shows the potency of anger\, attention\, profanity\, ambition\, power\, violence\, and lust and describes how they can be utilized in a much-needed international feminist revolution. \nSEVEN NECESSARY SINS for WOMEN and GIRLS\nA bold and uncompromising feminist manifesto that shows women and girls how to defy\, disrupt\, and destroy the patriarchy by embracing the qualities they’ve been trained to avoid. \nSeizing upon the energy of the #MeToo movement\, feminist activist Mona Eltahawy advocates a muscular\, out-loud approach to teaching women and girls to harness their power through what she calls the “seven necessary sins” that women and girls are not supposed to commit: to be angry\, ambitious\, profane\, violent\, attention-seeking\, lustful\, and powerful. All the necessary “sins” that women and girls require to erupt. \nEltahawy knows that the patriarchy is alive and well\, and she is fed the hell up: Sexually assaulted during hajj at the age of fifteen. Groped on the dance floor of a night club in Montreal at fifty. Countless other injustices in the years between. Illuminating her call to action are stories of activists and ordinary women around the world–from South Africa to China\, Nigeria to India\, Bosnia to Egypt–who are tapping into their inner fury and crossing the lines of race\, class\, faith\, and gender that make it so hard for marginalized women to be heard. Rather than teaching women and girls to survive the poisonous system they have found themselves in\, Eltahawy arms them to dismantle it. \nBrilliant\, bold\, and energetic\, The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls is a manifesto for all feminists in the fight against patriarchy.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nSaturday\, September 28\, 2019 at 7:00 pm we’re having a 15th Anniversary celebration with poets who have contributed to the success of our reading series. \n* \nSince its creation in 2004\, the Atwater Poetry Project has hosted 278 readings from poets from across Quebec\, Canada\, and further afield. The event will be hosted by Deanna Radford (series curator 2015 – 2018)\, and will feature a panel discussion led by H. Nigel Thomas. We’ll also be announcing the new curator\, and plans for the 2019/2020 season. \nThe event will start at 7:00 pm\, is free\, and everyone is welcome. Books by the poets will be for sale and there will be refreshments. \nThe reading will take place in the Atwater Library auditorium\, which is located on the second floor\, up two flights of stairs. SUMMARY:Dialogic Encounter with Rawi Hage
DESCRIPTION:The “Dialogic Encounter” is a two-evening discussion of the recent novel\, “Beirut Hellfire Society”\, by Rawi Hage. On September 30\, Prof. Cornett engages the audience directly both as a group and as individuals in a wide-ranging discussion of the novel\, its techniques and themes\, particularly as it engages with current social\, philosophical and ethical issues. The audience also responds to the discussion and excerpts from the novel with their own brief written texts. These responses form the basis for the dialogue with Rawi Hage in the second session of the “Dialogic Workshop”\, on October 7. The audience’s texts are read out and Hage is asked to reflect on the questions and issues and his own work.

SUMMARY:Writing to Preserve Memory: Capturing and Sharing Life Stories
DESCRIPTION:All levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \nIsabel Allende confessed\, “I write to preserve memory against the erosion of oblivion and to bring people together.” \nEvery life is a story\, and when we write that story\, we not only preserve it but share the joys and disappointments\, the heartaches and the triumphs\, and most importantly\, the lessons learnt. \nMemoir\, by its nature\, is more concerned with the emotional truth of occurrences and moments from a life\, as opposed to biography\, which is more often focused on factual or chronological events. \nIn this memoir workshop\, we will explore how to begin telling your story and review examples of the different ways that a story can be told. Will it be a travelogue or will it focus on major events that influenced your life? Or will it be about a relationship with a loved one? These are just a few possibilities. \nA portion of each session will be set aside for writing exercises based on prompts to help unlock the confidence you need to shape your story\, and to share your writing. \nAs an adjunct\, a recommended reading list of traditional and innovative memoirs will be provided\, and participants will be encouraged to review and share their favourite styles.

Sa traduction du roman Borderline de Marie-Sissi Labrèche paraîtra en 2019. Melissa vit à Montréal. \n/////////////////////////////////////// \nTRAUMA HEAD\nIn 2012\, poet Elee Kraljii Gardiner precipitously lost feeling in\, and use of\, her left side. The mini-stroke passed quickly but was symptomatic of something larger: a tear in the lining of an artery that opened an examination of mortality and crisis. This long-poem memoir tracks the author’s experiences with un/wellness and un/re-familiarity with herself. Shortlisted for the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative Poetry\, Trauma Head disturbs and disorders language and syntax to reconcile appearance with experience. \nAGAINST DEATH\nThe nimble\, serious play of the title\, Against Death: 35 Essays on Living\, is an accurate reflection of the range of tones\, approaches\, and experiences with death (which is to say\, living) inside this vibrant\, tender collection. While one need not be grieving to find resonance here\, those who grief has touched will not feel silenced or pushed outside. In eloquent\, luminous prose\, these essays will be a companion to many and will be a collection to return to (againlives inside against). As editor Elee Kraljii Gardiner reminds us\, “To be against something can be to reject or refute it. But to be against death can also mean to be in contact with\, pressed up next to\, to be intimately proximate with mortality.” This is all of us. I am grateful for this gathering and for this expansive (re)framing. —TC Tolbert\, author of Gephyromaniaand co-editor of Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics.

SUMMARY:WORDPLAY A writing workshop in celebration of creativity and wonder
DESCRIPTION:In a time of busy schedules\, and places to be and people to see\, it can be hard to find the time to simply play. WORDPLAY is a writing play group\, a time in your week reserved for you — a time to connect with the wonder that lies at the heart of words and where they can take us. \nFor a period of six weeks we will meet for two hours of writing projects and prompts designed to welcome the unexpected\, the spontaneous\, and the serendipitous\, culminating in an evening of readings on the last night. \nWhether you are a poet\, a fiction or non-fiction writer\, an aspiring writer\, a musician or a visual or performance artist\, or simply someone who loves the joy of words\, or even scrabble\, boggle or crossword puzzles\, this is an opportunity to entertain what it means to revel\, gambol and cut loose with language. \nWorkshop leader: Carolyn Boll\nA trained dancer\, and recipient of several Canada Council and Quebec multi-media and choreography grants\, author Carolyn Boll is a graduate of The Humber School for Writers. Her poems and short stories have appeared in Lavender Review\, The Gay & Lesbian Review\, and Mayday Magazine\, and her non-fiction writing has appeared in The Dance Current and The Montreal Gazette. Her first book\, a playful partnering between poetry\, image and dance\, is called Social Dance A Book of Ballroom Poetry and was published by Sally Jane Books\, the specialty imprint of indie publisher Headmistress Press.

SUMMARY:Write Now: A Playwriting Intensive to Jumpstart Your Play
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Sabrina Reeves\nThis workshop will give budding and experienced playwrights a forum in which to hear their work read aloud and have it commented on\, supported\, and developed. Limited to 12 participants. \nThis 8-week workshop is designed to get your play out of your head and onto the page. Through a combination of in-class writing exercises and reading scripts aloud\, it will allow playwrights to take their scripts to the next level. \nTopics covered will include: \n\nCharacter development\nStructure\nDialogue\nStakes\nRe-writes.\n\nEach week\, selected participants will bring in sections of their work for feedback. \nThe workshop will be more fun and useful to participants who have a play that they are already working on\, a few scenes\, or at the very least\, an outline of the idea they wish to pursue. It may be of particular interest (and complementary) to those who have taken an Introduction to Playwriting workshop. Participants can expect to come out of the workshop with a more developed script as well as tools for carrying on with their work and some ideas/suggestions of where to go and what to do with a finished draft.

SUMMARY:Expanding Our Poetic Range through Memory\, Place\, and the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Cristina Plamadeala\nThis workshop is for poets of any level of experience who are seeking to expand the range of their subject matter. Limited to 12 participants. \nHow\, as writers\, can we break the surface of the everyday and go deep? Over the eight sessions of the workshop\, we will take some time to dwell in the places our writers’ sensibility can travel to when we tune in to our senses and journey into memory and place. The aim of this workshop will be to generate a rich pool of new material\, from which our best work can emerge. \nWorkshops will consist of in-class writing exercises\, weekly writing assignments\, and time for participating poets to receive constructive feedback from their peers and the workshop leader. As a group\, we will also perform close readings of works by a range of published writers that constellate around a series of themes selected to help us mine our own memories and sensory experiences of the world around us. Proposed themes include \n\na child’s-eye view: writing through the lens of childhood;\nlost and found: orienting through poetry;\n(re)mapping our world: a sense of place;\nentering the myth: poetic exchanges with mythology; and\nmapping the landscape of the body.\n\nParticipants will be encouraged\, for the duration of the workshop\, to “apprentice” themselves to the work of a published poet of their choice\, whose voice will be a steady and nourishing guide as they work on their own material. They will also have the opportunity (though it is by no means obligatory) to read their own work aloud\, both as a practice tool for giving future poetry readings and to “lend an ear” to the editing process. The workshop will be a safe and friendly space\, with an emphasis on diving into the messiness of creation and getting excited about new ideas.

SUMMARY:Everything Happens at Once: Your Page One
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Marina Vulicevic\nThis workshop is intended for people interested in short- and long-form fiction who have begun puzzling out the beginnings of their stories. Limited to 12 participants. \nIn this fiction-writing workshop\, we will get our stories to hit the ground running by working on our Page One. Short story or long-form fiction\, all the elements of narration are thrown into play right away on the first page (okay\, maybe a little on the second). The themes and problems of the piece are all present\, stated or suggested\, sometimes hidden. We will learn to do that: get out of the starting blocks fast\, leaving our anxieties behind. \nThe “everything at once” approach means putting all the narrative elements into play simultaneously. Setting speaks for character\, dialogue speaks for plot\, the description of place speaks for the theme. All intertwined\, not consecutive. Everything at once\, like when you meet someone in real life\, even if it takes time to understand what you first thought you knew. \nWe’ll look at the beginning page of works of fiction to see how others have handled their beginnings. That revolver on the dining room table – does it really have to go off\, and who or what will be the target? When Dante admits in Sentence One\, “Halfway through the journey of my life\, I found myself lost in a forest dark\,” what sort of darkness is this\, and why is he telling us about it? The issue of who is talking to us\, and why\, will be essential to our Page Ones. \nThe object is to become more self-aware from the beginning\, without turning into hyper-planners intent on deleting all spontaneity. The Page One approach is one of the antidotes to the anxieties of the beginning writer\, since it stresses action: moving quickly\, getting the elements in play\, foreseeing eventual themes\, helping answer the question\, “Why does this story exist\, and where is it going?” \nOften the beginnings of stories wonder about their own existence. Tom O’Brien’s The Things They Carried meditates on the difficulty of telling a true war story. How can you tell if a war story is true? What is a war story anyway? Whom can we trust? This Page-One questioning launches the book.
