SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: BTTM FDRS
DESCRIPTION:Each month we host a Graphic Novel Book Club\, open to all\, during which we hang out and informally discuss a featured graphic novel. Our pick for February is BTTM FDRS by Ben Passmore and Ezra Claytan Daniels. \nThis Afrofuturist graphic novel explores gentrification and cultural appropriation with a blend of humor and horror. \nWe will meet at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) on Thursday\, February 13th at 7 p.m. Join us for refreshments and collective insights! \nABOUT:\nOnce a thriving working class neighborhood on Chicago’s south side\, the “Bottomyards” is now the definition of urban blight. When an aspiring fashion designer named Darla and her image-obsessed friend\, Cynthia\, descend upon the neighborhood in search of cheap rent\, they soon discover something far more seductive and sinister lurking behind the walls of their new home. Like a cross between Jordan Peele’s Get Out and John Carpenter’s The Thing\, Daniels and Passmore’s BTTM FDRS (pronounced “bottomfeeders”) offers a vision of horror that is gross and gory in all the right ways. At turns funny\, scary\, and thought provoking\, it unflinchingly confronts the monsters—both metaphoric and real—that are displacing cultures in urban neighborhoods today. \nGentrification and body horror collide in this brutal satire from the award-winning creators of Upgrade Soul and Your Black Friend and other Strangers. \n***We are offering a 20% discount on BTTM FDRS from now until the meeting date!*** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Desmond Cole - The Skin We're In
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with writer and activist DESMOND COLE as he discusses his new book THE SKIN WE’RE IN: A YEAR OF BLACK RESISTANCE AND POWER! \n///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// \nIn the tradition of Ta-Nehisi Coates\, a bracing\, provocative and perspective-shifting book from one of Canada’s most celebrated and uncompromising writers\, Desmond Cole. The Skin We’re In will spark a national conversation\, influence policy and inspire activists. \nIn May 2015\, the cover story of Toronto Life magazine shook Canada’s largest city to its core. Desmond Cole’s “The Skin I’m In” exposed the racist practices of the Toronto police force\, detailing the dozens of times Cole had been stopped and interrogated under the controversial practice of carding. The story quickly came to national prominence\, went on to win a number of National Magazine Awards and catapulted its author into the public sphere. Cole used his newfound profile to draw insistent\, unyielding attention to the injustices faced by Black Canadians on a daily basis: the devastating effects of racist policing; the hopelessness produced by an education system that expects little of its black students and withholds from them the resources they need to succeed more fully; the heartbreak of those vulnerable before the child welfare system and those separated from their families by discriminatory immigration laws. \nBoth Cole’s activism and journalism find vibrant expression in his first book\, The Skin We’re In. Puncturing once and for all the bubble of Canadian smugness and naïve assumptions of a post-racial nation\, Cole chronicles just one year–2017–in the struggle against racism in this country. It was a year that saw calls for tighter borders when Black refugees braved frigid temperatures to cross into Manitoba from the States\, Indigenous land and water protectors resisting the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday\, police across the country rallying around an officer accused of murder\, and more. \nThe year also witnessed the profound personal and professional ramifications of Desmond Cole’s unwavering determination to combat injustice. In April\, Cole disrupted a Toronto police board meeting by calling for the destruction of all data collected through carding. Following the protest\, Cole\, a columnist with the Toronto Star\, was summoned to a meeting with the paper’s opinions editor and informed that his activism violated company policy. Rather than limit his efforts defending Black lives\, Cole chose to sever his relationship with the publication. Then in July\, at another TPS meeting\, Cole challenged the board publicly\, addressing rumours of a police cover-up of the brutal beating of Dafonte Miller by an off-duty police officer and his brother. When Cole refused to leave the meeting until the question was publicly addressed\, he was arrested. The image of Cole walking\, handcuffed and flanked by officers\, out of the meeting fortified the distrust between the city’s Black community and its police force. \nIn a month-by-month chronicle\, Cole locates the deep cultural\, historical and political roots of each event so that what emerges is a personal\, painful and comprehensive picture of entrenched\, systemic inequality. Urgent\, controversial and unsparingly honest\, The Skin We’re In is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada\, as well as a potent antidote to the all-too-present complacency of many white Canadians. \n////////////////////////////////////////////////////// \nDESMOND COLE is an award-winning journalist\, radio host\, and activist in Toronto. His writing has appeared in the Toronto Star\, Toronto Life\, The Walrus\, NOW Magazine\, Ethnic Aisle\, Torontoist\, BuzzFeed\, and the Ottawa Citizen. He hosts a weekly radio program every Sunday on Newstalk 1010.

SUMMARY:D+Q Cooks! Cookbook Club: Jubilee
DESCRIPTION:Food lovers take note! \nTo attend this club we ask that you cook something from the cookbook and come ready to discuss and eat.\nSuper excited to test recipes from the book beforehand?! Tag us at #DandQCooks on Instagram or post your work here on the Facebook page.\nYou can also join our group Drawn & Quarterly Cook Book Club where we keep the discussion rolling.\nThis club meets at 6pm on Sunday. \n***We are offering a 20% discount on JUBILEE from now until the meeting date!*** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated. \nTHE BOOK\nThroughout her career\, Toni Tipton-Martin has shed new light on the history\, breadth\, and depth of African American cuisine. She’s introduced us to black cooks\, some long forgotten\, who established much of what’s considered to be our national cuisine. After all\, if Thomas Jefferson introduced French haute cuisine to this country\, who do you think actually cooked it? \nIn Jubilee\, Tipton-Martin brings these masters into our kitchens. Through recipes and stories\, we cook along with these pioneering figures\, from enslaved chefs to middle- and upper-class writers and entrepreneurs. With more than 100 recipes\, from classics such as Sweet Potato Biscuits\, Seafood Gumbo\, Buttermilk Fried Chicken\, and Pecan Pie with Bourbon to lesser-known but even more decadent dishes like Bourbon & Apple Hot Toddies\, Spoon Bread\, and Baked Ham Glazed with Champagne\, Jubilee presents techniques\, ingredients\, and dishes that show the roots of African American cooking—deeply beautiful\, culturally diverse\, fit for celebration. \nTHE AUTHOR\nToni Tipton-Martin is a culinary journalist and community activist and the author of the James Beard Award–winning The Jemima Code. Her collection of more than three hundred African American cookbooks has been exhibited at the James Beard House\, and she has twice been invited to the White House to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs to raise a healthier generation of kids. Tipton-Martin is a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Foodways Texas.

SUMMARY:Sharing and Feedback Session
DESCRIPTION:Texting;Texto : Salon littéraire — beta reading + feedback – Hosted by Andrew Gordon Middleton \nTexting;Texto : Salon littéraire — beta reading + feedback — is an inclusive group\, welcoming writers of all literary forms to partake of a quiet evening of sharing (our new) literature\, food and opinions. \nIn our standard format\, what we call “15 minutes of Fame\,” the fame we offer is humble. Or perhaps preparatory. As Andy Warhol wrote in 1968\, “In the future\, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” \nWe offer you a moment in the limelight to present a literary work and get some feedback on it. Most often\, you are given 15 minutes to both read and receive feedback on your work. Each meeting will also allow one regular member a more figurative 15 minutes\, where they can go long. In all cases\, we ask that\, whenever possible\, participants post their work on our Google Drive ahead of time and make an effort before the meeting to read and think about the work others are presenting. \nThis is not an open mic. Although there is a place for reading in public\, we want to take it a step further and let the reader know how the public understood the work. \nAnd\, yes\, participation is welcome without presenting. Regular members are given priority over new ones so a good way to get going is to come and participate. You’ll get a chance to read before long. \nIt is a quiet space so no mic is needed. Because it is quiet\, we offer you the option to record your work and perhaps upload it to our site or our Soundcloud page. \nAt the moment\, the salons are open to all literary genres including poetry\, prose fiction and nonfiction\, play and screenplay scripts\, literary essays. In the future\, we may make specific salons for individual forms or genres. ◊ \n\nFor full event listings\, please join the Meetup group here. If you prefer\, you can also contact me directly here or sign up for our occasional newsletter here. SUMMARY:Listening for Labour: Feminist Close Listening in the Literary Audio Archive - a talk by Karis Shearer and Deanna Fong
DESCRIPTION:What kinds of labour are visible in historical accounts of literary communities? What kinds of labour are audible? Drawing on collaborative research with Deanna Fong on archival recordings from the SoundBox Collection held at the the University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus)\, this talk interrogates how attending to the medium of sound recording can remap history by citing gendered affective labour as an important foundation to collectivity and community. In its account of that labour\, the talk outlines and reflects on a practice Fong and Shearer have termed “feminist close listening.”

SUMMARY:Gay Reads Book Club: In the Dream House
DESCRIPTION:Join the Gay Reads book club to discuss classic and contemporary literature by LGBTQ2IA+ authors. We’ll read across genres to uncover queer sensibilities\, alternative canons\, and exciting new voices. The club meets every two months at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly with host Kathleen Fraser\, and is open to all. \nAt our next meeting February 4th\, at 7 PM\, we’ll discuss Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House. \n**We offer a 20% discount on In the Dream House from now until the meeting date.** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated. \n/////////////////////////////////////////// \nTHE BOOK\nIn the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado’s engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad\, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman\, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. \nAnd it’s that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope–haunted houses\, erotica\, bildungsroman–in which Machado holds the events up to the light and examines them from different angles. She looks back at her religious adolescence\, unpacks the stereotype of lesbian relationships as safe and utopian\, and widens the view with essayistic explorations about the history and reality of abuse in queer relationships. \nMachado’s dire narrative is leavened with her characteristic wit\, playfulness\, and openness to inquiry. She casts a critical eye over legal proceedings\, Star Trek and Disney villains\, fairy tales\, as well as iconic works of film and fiction. The result is a wrenching\, riveting book that explodes our ideas about what a memoir can do and be.

SUMMARY:New Reads Book Club: The Topeka School by Ben Lerner
DESCRIPTION:The New Reads Book Club focuses on contemporary literature and is hosted by Drawn and Quarterly staff members. The book club meetings take place every 4-6 weeks\, and are open to all. \nFor our JANUARY meeting\, we will meet at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Bernard O.) at 7 pm to discuss THE TOPEKA SCHOOL\, by Ben Lerner. The evening will be hosted by Librairie Drawn & Quarterly’s own Saelan Twerdy. \nJoin us for discussion and drinks! \n**We offer a 20% discount on THE TOPEKA SCHOOL by Ben Lerner from now until the meeting date.** \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support free events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. You also get to take advantage of a great discount! Your support is appreciated. \n//////////////////////////////////////////// \nTHE BOOK\nFrom the award-winning author of 10:04 and Leaving the Atocha Station\, a tender and expansive family drama set in the American Midwest at the turn of the century\, hailed by Maggie Nelson as Ben Lerner’s “most discerning\, ambitious\, innovative\, and timely novel to date.” \nAdam Gordon is a senior at Topeka High School\, class of ’97. His mother\, Jane\, is a famous feminist author; his father\, Jonathan\, is an expert at getting “lost boys” to open up. They both work at a psychiatric clinic that has attracted staff and patients from around the world. Adam is a renowned debater\, expected to win a national championship before he heads to college. He is one of the cool kids\, ready to fight or\, better\, freestyle about fighting if it keeps his peers from thinking of him as weak. Adam is also one of the seniors who bring the loner Darren Eberheart–who is\, unbeknownst to Adam\, his father’s patient–into the social scene\, to disastrous effect. \nDeftly shifting perspectives and time periods\, The Topeka School is the story of a family\, its struggles and its strengths: Jane’s reckoning with the legacy of an abusive father\, Jonathan’s marital transgressions\, the challenge of raising a good son in a culture of toxic masculinity. It is also a riveting prehistory of the present: the collapse of public speech\, the trolls and tyrants of the New Right\, and the ongoing crisis of identity among white men.

SUMMARY:Poetry Matters with christian favreau\, M.W. Jaeggle\, & Rebecca Salazar
DESCRIPTION:Please join Poetry Matters for an evening with poets christian favreau\, M.W. Jaeggle\, and Rebecca Salazar\, exploring questions of trauma\, grief\, healing\, and gratitude.\n\n\n—\n\nWhen: Thursday\, January 23\, 7pm-9pm\nWhere: Anticafé Vieux-Port\, 406 Notre-Dame St. East\, Montreal\, Quebec H2Y 1C8\n\n\n\n\nHow can wellness be imagined for and by survivors of ongoing\, intersectional trauma? Addressing trauma as experienced by individual\, chronically ill bodies and on an ecological scale\, these poems turn to secular ritual and magic as ethical structures that may permit healing to coexist and engage politically with complex harms.\n\n\n\nRebecca Salazar (she/they) is the author of the knife that justifies the wound (Rahila’s Ghost) and Guzzle (Anstruther Press)\, a poetry editor for The Fiddlehead and Plenitude magazines\, and a PhD candidate living on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’kmaq peoples.\n\n\n\nYou think that because you understand “one” that you must therefore understand “two” because one and one make two. But you forget that you must also understand “and.”—Sufi parable\n\nFor far too long we have othered nature; the distinction between humans and the land has only bolstered illusions of authority and hierarchy. If\, as Phyllis Webb suggested\, poetry cannot change the world\, it can change individual consciousness—starting with the poet’s—in efforts to understand the “and” between “one” and “one.” This reading explores ecological grief\, the responsibility of connection\, and gratitude.\n\n\nchristian favreau is a poet and activist living in Montréal (Tiohtiá:ke). His work has appeared in The McGill Daily Literary Supplement and Vallum. His forthcoming book of poetry with JackPine Press will be available in late 2020.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn “Talking to Grief\,” poet Denise Levertov depicts grief as a stray dog desiring the companionship of the speaker—suggesting that taking ownership of grief transforms both the emotion and those experiencing it. In dialogue with Levertov\, Jaeggle’s Night of the Crash\, a sequence of poems on the death of the narrator’s son\, proposes that wellness is only antithetical to grief when grief is denied its history.\n\n\n\nM.W. Jaeggle’s poetry has appeared in The Antigonish Review\, Contemporary Verse 2\, The Dalhousie Review\, Vallum\, The Veg\, and elsewhere. He is author of two chapbooks\, Janus on the Pacific and The Night of the Crash. While pursuing an MA at McGill\, Mike served as Poetry Editor at Scrivener Creative Review and was awarded the Mona Adilman Prize in poetry. Currently Poetry Editor at Montreal Writes\, he lives in Vancouver.\n\n\n\n—\nFor further information on Poetry Matters\, please see https://www.mcgill.ca/poetrymatters/\n\nSuggestions for upcoming sessions very welcome – and please spread the word to any others who might be interested.

SUMMARY:Lisa Robertson Launches The Baudelaire Fractal
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Montreal launch of The Baudelaire Fractal\, the debut novel from acclaimed poet Lisa Robertson! \nTHE BAUDELAIRE FRACTAL\nA debut novel by acclaimed poet Lisa Robertson\, in which a poet realizes she has written the works of Baudelaire. One morning\, the poet Hazel Brown wakes up in a strange hotel room to find that she’s written the complete works of Charles Baudelaire. Surprising as this may be\, it’s no more surprising to Brown than the impossible journey she’s taken to become the writer that she is. Animated by the spirit of the poète maudit\, she shuttles between London\, Vancouver\, Paris\, and the French countryside\, moving fluidly between the early 1980s and the present\, from rented room to rented room\, all the while considering such Baudelairian obsessions as modernity\, poverty\, and the perfect jacket. .. Part memoir\, part magical realism\, part hilarious trash-talking take on contemporary art and the poet’s life\, The Baudelaire Fractal is the long-awaited debut novel by the inimitable Lisa Robertson. \nLISA ROBERTSON\nPoet and essayist Lisa Robertson has held residencies at the California College of the Arts\, Cambridge University; University of California\, Berkeley; UC San Diego; and American University of Paris. Her books include Cinema of the Present\, Debbie: An Epic (nominated for the Governor General’s Award in Canada)\, The Men\, The Weather\, R’s Boat (poetry) and Occasional Works and Seven Walks from the Office for Soft Architecture (essays). Lisa Robertson’s Magenta Soul Whip (Coach House) was named one of The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2010\, and was longlisted for the 2011 Warwick Prize for Writing. She currently lives in France.
