SUMMARY:Anna Sommer and Catherine Ocelot Conundrum double launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Librairie Drawn & Quarterly and Conundrum Press as we celebrate the release of The Unknown by Anna Sommer\, and Art Life by Catherine Ocelot. Featuring presentations by Sommer and Ocelot\, alongside translators Helge Dascher and Aleshia Jensen. \nTHE UNKNOWN\nA story of deceit\, self-deception\, and the search for happiness\nWhen Helen finds a newborn abandoned in a changing room in her boutique\, she decides to keep the baby nestled in a cardboard box and hidden from her husband.\nAfter Vicky is talked into sex work by her boarding school roommate\, Wanda\, all of Vicky’s secrets–including her affair with their history teacher and her pregnancy–are quickly uncovered.\nAs the two narratives converge\, coincidences and secrets are revealed. Incisive\, wicked and breezily unconcerned by taboos\, Anna Sommer lets readers put together the pieces of her morally ambiguous fable.\nThe Unknown is the English language translation of Sommer’s L’Inconnu\, a French language edition published by Les Cahiers Dessinés. In 2018\, L’Inconnu was nominated for a prize at the prestigious Angoulême International Comics Festival. \nART LIFE\nWinner of the Prix Bédélys (Best comic in Quebec)\nShortlisted for the Quebec booksellers award 2018 in the graphic novel category (Prix des libraires)\nCatherine Ocelot wonders about her place as an artist\, digging into the layers of what it means to live this Art Life. In her search for answers\, she talks with seven artists from different disciplines who express their doubts\, their struggles\, their ambitions and their sometimes-wise and sometimes-funny observations. The author stages these encounters with finesse and wit\, and echoes them with scenes from her own life. Art Life is a tragicomic tale tinged with fantasy that explores the impact of others on oneself\, led by an artist who slowly comes to understand herself.

SUMMARY:QWF Workshop - The Art of Literary Translation
DESCRIPTION:For those with a solid mastery of French and English\, writing ability in English\, and an interest in literature.  \n  \nIn this workshop we\, will explore literary translation from French to English: fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry\, and songs. \n  \n  \nWe will look at contemporary literature from Quebec and France\, as well as some older (nineteenth and twentieth century) texts. Sources may include Gabrielle Roy\, Anne Hébert\, Annie Ernaux\, and Samuel Archibald. We will start by looking at an excerpt of a literary text in French and reading a published English translation of it. What difficulties (such as euphony\, voice\, word play\, and verb tense) did the translator face\, and how successful was she or he? At each meeting\, there will be time to produce your own translations\, often in groups. We will read our work aloud and comment on difficulties and strokes of inspiration. Participants will have the opportunity to translate a further passage from the same work (or from another) as a homework assignment for the next meeting. The corrected assignments provide individual feedback and lead to discussion of the issues encountered. \n  \nDuring the course of the workshop\, you’ll be asked to present a passage you have translated\, \ncommenting on the issues it presents\, and describing ways of solving these issues. This is an ideal opportunity to begin or pursue a project you intend to submit to a publisher.

SUMMARY:Sensational Songwriting: The Art and Craft of Song (Live & Online)
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to write songs but were too intimated? Or\, are you a professional songwriter longing for accountability and feedback? \nHow do we know if an idea is solid enough to inspire a song? What’s the difference between a ballad and a 3 minute pop song? What are our choices when it comes to rhyming schemes and how do we maintain a flow when scanning lyrics to melody? How do we write a thrilling pre-chorus and what makes a song have an impact? \nArt is usually not created in a void. We need others for inspiration\, tool ideas and feedback. In each session we will learn a new skill\, share what we are working on\, and gain valuable feedback. Think of this class as part tool building and part market research. See how others respond to your songs to see if you are getting your message across effectively and powerfully. \nI teach from a place of positivity\, generosity and inspiration. Expect passion\, connection and fun! \nSchedule \nTuesday\, June 16\, 3 pm – 4:30 pm\nTuesday\, June 23\, 3 pm – 4:30 pm\nTuesday\, June 30\, 3 pm – 4:30 pm\nTuesday\, July 7\, 3 pm – 4:30 pm \nAthena’s music is often compared to Annie Lennox\, Adele and Lady Gaga. Her music videos charted #1 on MTV LOGO and her song “Love is Love” won Best Pop Song at the Outmusic Awards. Nominations include Artist of the Year\, Album of the Year and Humanitarian Songwriter of the Year. She has toured across North America and Europe and shared the stage with Sarah McLachlan\, Jim Carrey and Janeane Garofalo. She has released 5 albums and 3 dance EP’s. Her lyrics are on display at the International Museum for Peace and Solidarity in Uzbekistan and she was commissioned to write poetry for the New York Aquarium by the Wildlife Conservation Society. Her music has also been accepted into the New York Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Centre. She holds a BFA in Music from Concordia University\, and deepened her craft through master classes at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York.

The prompts will be a fun way to exercise techniques discussed at the beginning of class and will hopefully spark ideas for future projects. \nStudents will be asked to submit a short piece of writing to the instructor prior to each class. \nIn the second half of each lesson\, everyone will read aloud from their submitted work and receive in-depth feedback from the instructor and their peers. \nTwo Schedules:\nSchedule (open)\nThursday\, June 25\, 11 am – 1 pm\nThursday\, July 2\, 11 am – 1 pm\nThursday\, July 9\, 11 am – 1 pm\nThursday\, July 16\, 11 am – 1 pm \nSchedule (open)\nTuesday\, June 30\, 6 pm – 8 pm\nTuesday\, July 7\, 6 pm – 8 pm\nTuesday\, July 14\, 6 pm – 8pm\nTuesday\, July 21\, 6 pm – 8 pm \nEva Crocker is a freelance writer based in Montreal\, her short story collection Barrelling Forward was a finalist for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Emerging LGBTQ Authors.
