Continuing their mandate to encourage dialogue\, the company will hold post-show talkbacks on March 16\, 22\, 24 and 29. An evolving\, interactive installation of visual art will be in the lobby complementing the production. Mature content—ages 13+. \nCounter Offence is a collision of virtues. Shazia\, an Indo-Québecoise woman with traditional Muslim parents\, is in an abusive relationship with her husband Shapoor\, an Iranian facing immigration issues. What happens when the fight against racism comes into conflict with the struggle to end violence against women? Working backwards through flashbacks\, the intersection of the two is explored. The consequences of gender versus race force us to question our own prejudices and motivations. \nReflecting the streets of Montreal\, the talented\, culturally diverse cast is Maureen Adelson\, Amena Ahmad\, Michael Briganti\, Davide Chiazzese\, Alida Esmail\, Minoo Gundevia\, Amir Sám Nakhjavani and Arun Varma. \nFrom playwright Rahul Varma: “Whenever I spoke to peers about the play’s themes\, their usual comment was: ‘This happens a lot in your community\, doesn’t it?’ From what I knew\, yes it did. But I was surprised they didn’t ask the same question of themselves. According to available statistics and cultural evidence\, domestic violence occurs in the white community just as it does in the South Asian community\, and perhaps more often. I was perturbed by the dichotomy that Canadians perceive spousal abuse as a crime if the perpetrator is a white male\, but a cultural value if he is a person of colour. Throughout the writing process I was confronted with issues of race\, multiculturalism and gender. DESCRIPTION:“One stroke of lightning does not have to lead anywhere\, but to the next stroke of lightning.”\n– Alice Munro  \nAll levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \n  \nAre your characters stuck at first base? Maybe you’ve been trying for months to create tasteful romantic tension\, but your revisions seem to be getting tawdrier instead. Love and sex in fiction are challenging to write: We’re striving to find the perfect chemistry between voice\, language\, pacing\, plot\, and setting\, and the measurement of each is never the same from one situation to the next. Just as it takes time in real life for intimacy to grow between people\, it takes more than a few lines in a short story or pages in a novel to develop genuine narrative intimacy. \nThis workshop will provide participants with creative and technical tools to write anything from smoldering eye contact between strangers on a subway to harrowing mid-novel breakup sex between critical characters. We’ll look at a variety of print and digital media\, and everyone will be encouraged to act as a reader as well as a writer—that is\, to share ideas and offer constructive feedback. Participants will leave the workshop with an expanded\, specialized lexicon and the confidence to know when to be nuanced in their writing and when to be explicit. \nThis workshop is not a genre “how-to” for romance or erotica\, but a fun\, holistic survey of tools and techniques writers can use to craft believable and compelling intimacy in any fictional context. \n

Mootoo was born in Ireland and grew up in Trinidad. She immigrated\nto Vancouver more than thirty years ago\, and now lives near Toronto. Her new novel\, Polar Vortex Book*hug Press) is out this month. \nHelen Humphreys is the award-winning author of eight novels\, four works of creative non- fiction\, and four books of poetry. Her\nwriting has been published internationally and optioned for film\, theatre\, opera\, and television. She lives and writes in Kingston\,\nOntario.

SUMMARY:QWF Workshop - Love and Intimacy in Fiction: Setting the Scene
DESCRIPTION:“One stroke of lightning does not have to lead anywhere\, but to the next stroke of lightning.”\n– Alice Munro  \nAll levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \n  \nAre your characters stuck at first base? Maybe you’ve been trying for months to create tasteful romantic tension\, but your revisions seem to be getting tawdrier instead. Love and sex in fiction are challenging to write: We’re striving to find the perfect chemistry between voice\, language\, pacing\, plot\, and setting\, and the measurement of each is never the same from one situation to the next. Just as it takes time in real life for intimacy to grow between people\, it takes more than a few lines in a short story or pages in a novel to develop genuine narrative intimacy. \nThis workshop will provide participants with creative and technical tools to write anything from smoldering eye contact between strangers on a subway to harrowing mid-novel breakup sex between critical characters. We’ll look at a variety of print and digital media\, and everyone will be encouraged to act as a reader as well as a writer—that is\, to share ideas and offer constructive feedback. Participants will leave the workshop with an expanded\, specialized lexicon and the confidence to know when to be nuanced in their writing and when to be explicit. \nThis workshop is not a genre “how-to” for romance or erotica\, but a fun\, holistic survey of tools and techniques writers can use to craft believable and compelling intimacy in any fictional context. \n
