SUMMARY:QWF Workshop - Love and Intimacy in Fiction: Setting the Scene
DESCRIPTION:“One stroke of lightning does not have to lead anywhere\, but to the next stroke of lightning.”\n– Alice Munro \nAll levels are welcome. Limited to 12 participants. \n  \nAre your characters stuck at first base? Maybe you’ve been trying for months to create tasteful romantic tension\, but your revisions seem to be getting tawdrier instead. Love and sex in fiction are challenging to write: We’re striving to find the perfect chemistry between voice\, language\, pacing\, plot\, and setting\, and the measurement of each is never the same from one situation to the next. Just as it takes time in real life for intimacy to grow between people\, it takes more than a few lines in a short story or pages in a novel to develop genuine narrative intimacy. \nThis workshop will provide participants with creative and technical tools to write anything from smoldering eye contact between strangers on a subway to harrowing mid-novel breakup sex between critical characters. We’ll look at a variety of print and digital media\, and everyone will be encouraged to act as a reader as well as a writer—that is\, to share ideas and offer constructive feedback. Participants will leave the workshop with an expanded\, specialized lexicon and the confidence to know when to be nuanced in their writing and when to be explicit. \nThis workshop is not a genre “how-to” for romance or erotica\, but a fun\, holistic survey of tools and techniques writers can use to craft believable and compelling intimacy in any fictional context. \n

Hosted by Helen Chau Bradley\, the book club meetings take place every two months\, and are open to the public. \nOn Tuesday 31 March\, 2020\, we’ll assemble at the Petite Librairie Drawn + Quarterly (176 Bernard O.) at 7 PM to talk about The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. SUMMARY:WRITERS OUT LOUD @ IMAGINATION 2020: LITERARY NOTES
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, the IMAGINATION 2020 FESTIVAL HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO REGULATIONS SURROUNDING THE COVID-19 SITUATION.\nModerated by Alison Brunette \nNotewordy Concert\nFor the second year in a row\, QWF’S Writers Out Loud series joins forces with the Morrin Centre and the Orchestre symphonique de Quebec (OSQ) to present a “notewordy” concert. Susan Doherty\, Tess Liem\, and Lindsay Nixon all won QWF prizes in November 2019 for their works of nonfiction and poetry. Tune into their stories\, which are accompanied by music—performed and chosen by the OSQ’s string quartet—that captures the spirit of these prize-winning books. \nAbout the Authors\n \nEducated at Concordia University and Ryerson\, Susan Doherty has worked at Maclean’s Magazine and the International Herald Tribune and has run her own advertising production company for 20 years. After 28 long years in Toronto she returned to Montreal and wrote her debut novel\, A Secret Music (2015). Research for her novel led her to the Douglas Hospital and ten extraordinary years as a volunteer with people suffering from extreme psychosis. The Ghost Garden is the culmination of her work in the excavation of mental illness. Susan’s affiliations include: the YMCA\, the Douglas Institute\, the Royal Conservatory of Music\, the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, and Nazareth House\, a shelter for the homeless and addicted. \n \nTess Liem’s writing has appeared in Plenitude\, Room Magazine\, The Boston Review\, Best Canadian Poetry 2018 and 2019\, the Montreal Review of Books and elsewhere. Her debut collection Obits. (Coach House) was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award and won the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award as well as the A.M. Klein Prize in 2019. She lives in Montreal\, Tiotia:ke—unceded Haudenosaunee and Mohawk territories. \n  \n  \nCrédit photo: Stacy Lee\nLindsay Nixon is a Cree-Métis-Saulteaux researcher\, curator\, editor\, writer\, and McGill Art History PhD student. Nixon won the prestigious 2019 Dayne Ogilive Prize and the 2019 Concordia University First Book Prize\, and has been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award\, an Indigenous Voices Literary Award and several National Magazine Awards. Namely\, Nixon was nominated as the lead editor for the summer 2017 issue of Canadian Art in the “Best Editorial Package” category—an issue on the theme of “Kinship.” They currently hold the position of Editor-at-Large for Canadian Art and previously edited mâmawi-âcimowak\, an independent Indigenous art\, art criticism\, and literature journal. SUMMARY:The Power of Place: Making a Communal Memory Map
DESCRIPTION:In this two-afternoon workshop\, presented by the Atwater Writers Exhibition\, participants will paint\, draw\, stitch and/or appliqué details of a place that evokes personal memories: an old cinema\, your grandmother’s garden\, or another remembered place that is important to you. We will provide a recycled paint tarp for background\, as well as art supplies. Come prepared to share your stories of your chosen place: we will talk with each other while we make a communal tapestry for display at the Atwater Library. Bring any meaningful fabric scraps or other material you might wish to include in your part of the memory map (and don’t mind leaving as part of the communal artwork). No artistic or sewing experience necessary. \nWorkshop leader Kathleen Winter has written novels\, short stories\, and an Arctic travel memoir. She has lived in the UK\, Newfoundland\, and Verdun. She has worked with young people and elders\, making folk textile pieces that celebrate memory\, place and personal story. \nTo register: elise.m@videotron.ca.
