SUMMARY:Kama La Mackerel's ZOM-FAM Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Kama La Mackerel\, the poet behind the debut lyric poetry collection ZOM-FAM\, for their cross-continental book tour! In virtual venues from Halifax to Vancouver\, with special guests including Jillian Christmas and jes sachse\, Kama’s My Body Is the Ocean Tour will take place on dates between November 16th and December 2nd\, 2020. Find one that works for you. \nABOUT ZOM-FAM:\nIn their debut poetry collection\, Kama La Mackerel mythologizes a queer/trans narrative of and for their home island\, Mauritius. Multiply voiced and imbued with complex storytelling\, ZOM-FAM showcases a fluid narrative that summons ancestral voices\, femme tongues\, broken colonial languages and a tender queer subjectivity\, all of which grapple with the legacy of plantation servitude. \nKAMA LA MACKEREL is a Montreal-based Mauritian-Canadian multi-disciplinary artist\, educator\, writer\, community-arts facilitator and literary translator who works within and across performance\, photography\, installations\, textiles\, digital art and literature. Kama’s work is grounded in the exploration of justice\, love\, healing\, decoloniality\, hybridity\, cosmopolitanism and self- and collective-empowerment.\nlamackerel.net\n@KamaLaMackerel \nClosed captioning will be included for most events. Please support the local bookseller hosts by getting a copy of the book through them. Please contact Metonymy Press with any accessibility requests or questions about events.

SUMMARY:D+Q Cook Book Club - Maenam + Bravetart
DESCRIPTION:Join our D+Q Cooks Book Club as we meet every month virtually to discuss and and eat from new cookbooks! \nFood lovers take note!\nTo attend this club we ask that you cook something from the cookbook and come ready to discuss and eat\, virtually that is! \nSuper excited to test recipes from the book beforehand?! Tag us at #DandQCooks on Instagram or post your work here on the Facebook page. \nYou can also join our group Drawn & Quarterly Cook Book Club where we keep the discussion rolling.\nAt our next meeting\, Sunday November 1st\, at 6 PM EST\, we’ll discuss MAENAM: A Fresh Approach to Thai Cooking by Angus An and BRAVETART: Iconic American Desserts by Stella Parks and J. Kenji López-Alt. \nWhere and How Can I purchase the book? Our webstore is here:\nhttp://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/posts/webstore-faq \nLinks to the books here:\nhttps://bit.ly/3m8U2v9\nand here:\nhttps://bit.ly/37xJHov\nWe Ship Canada-wide! \nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. Your support is appreciated. \n/////////////////////////////////////////// \nMAENAM: A Fresh Approach to Thai Cooking \nMore than 100 flavor-driven Thai recipes built on technique\, balance\, tradition\, and innovation from award-winning chef Angus An.\nIn Maenam\, chef Angus An takes you on his ongoing journey of discovering Thai cuisine and shows how to blend traditional Thai flavors and cooking techniques with local\, seasonal inspirations from the west coast. With Angus’s foolproof instructions\, Maenam offers the foundation to modern Thai cuisine for adventurous cooks of all skill levels. Filled with over 100 of his signature recipes\, each meal balances robust\, intense ingredients with his approach to Thai food’s clear\, sharp flavours. Transform your kitchen with snacks inspired by Thai street vendors\, quick to prepare noodles and one-bowl meals\, light- and full-bodied soups to have all year-round\, flavorful and protein-filled salads\, seasoned stir fries\, killer curries\, and refreshing desserts.\nNamed after Angus’s first award-winning Vancouver Thai restaurant Maenam\, the Thai word for “river\,” this cookbook is a celebration of Angus’s inventive approach to Thai cuisine that is in many ways representative of a river’s constant ever-replenishing flow. Just as a river continues its course around boulders and obstacles\, Angus’s ongoing evolution and path to becoming one of the most significant Thai chefs in North America is an unlikely one.\nAngus grew up in Taiwan\, moved to Canada when he was young\, and trained at the French Culinary Institute. He fell in love with Thai cuisine when studying at Nahm under renowned chef and award-winning author\, of Thai Food and Thai Street Food\, David Thompson. He continues to travel to Thailand to eat\, research\, and learn. He takes his knowledge home\, and finds innovative ways to root a traditional dish to the Pacific Northwest while accentuating each ingredient’s flavor\, aroma\, and texture–all of which you will learn in this cookbook. With its beautiful design\, incredible photography\, and seasonal menus\, Maenam offers a Thai culinary experience like no other. \nBRAVETART: Iconic American Desserts by Stella Parks and J. Kenji López-Alt. \nFrom One-Bowl Devil’s Food Layer Cake to a flawless Cherry Pie that’s crisp even on the very bottom\, BraveTart is a celebration of classic American desserts. Whether down-home delights like Blueberry Muffins and Glossy Fudge Brownies or supermarket mainstays such as Vanilla Wafers and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream\, your favorites are all here. These meticulously tested recipes bring an award-winning pastry chef’s expertise into your kitchen\, along with advice on how to “mix it up” with over 200 customizable variations—in short\, exactly what you’d expect from a cookbook penned by a senior editor at Serious Eats. Yet BraveTart is much more than a cookbook\, as Stella Parks delves into the surprising stories of how our favorite desserts came to be\, from chocolate chip cookies that predate the Tollhouse Inn to the prohibition-era origins of ice cream sodas and floats. With a foreword by The Food Lab’s J. Kenji López-Alt\, vintage advertisements for these historical desserts\, and breathtaking photography from Penny De Los Santos\, BraveTart is sure to become an American classic.

SUMMARY:Thomas More Institute Open House
DESCRIPTION:From 1-3pm on Saturday\, January 16th\, the Thomas More Institute is hosting a free\, online open house to introduce community members to our educational approach! Located in downtown Montreal\, we are a secular\, liberal arts academic institution that offers university-level discussion courses as well as other opportunities for lifelong learning. Our discussions differ from the lectures offered elsewhere as group members are invited to participate collaboratively in a process of shared inquiry and reflection. \nThe open house is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our course offerings for the winter and spring semesters – courses like “A Dose of Canadian Humour” and “Angels and Animals: Innocence and Responsibility in Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” take a closer look at some of the fiction works that have kept us thinking (and laughing) over the past year\, and bring us into conversation with other readers. \nIt is\, additionally\, a great chance to learn more about our different community initiatives\, like our Seniors Outreach Program\, Book Club\, and Interview Series. All of these events\, like our courses\, take place online and center engaged discussion\, richly animating these winter days.

Your support is appreciated.3 \n/////////////////////////////////////////// \nLOVE AFTER THE END \nA bold and breathtaking anthology of queer Indigenous speculative fiction\, edited by the author of Jonny Appleseed. \nThis exciting and groundbreaking fiction collection showcases a number of new and emerging 2SQ (Two-Spirit and queer) Indigenous writers from across Turtle Island. These visionary authors show how queer Indigenous communities can bloom and thrive through utopian narratives that detail the vivacity and strength of 2SQness throughout its plight in the maw of settler colonialism’s histories.\nHere\, readers will discover bioengineered AI rats\, transplanted trees in space\, the rise of a 2SQ resistance camp\, a primer on how to survive Indigiqueerly\, virtual reality applications\, mother ships at sea\, and the very bending of space-time continuums queered through NDN time. Love after the End demonstrates the imaginatively queer Two-Spirit futurisms we have all been dreaming of since 1492.\nContributors include Nathan Adler\, Darcie Little Badger\, Gabriel Castilloux Calderon\, Adam Garnet Jones\, Mari Kurisato\, Kai Minosh Pyle\, David Alexander Robertson\, jaye simpson\, and Nazbah Tom.
