DESCRIPTION:An African proverb has it that when an old man dies\, a library burns to the ground. Joel Yanofsky left us at just sixty-five\, not very old\, but he left a library of his books: Homo Erectus\, a collection of comic essays; Jacob’s Ladder\, a novel; Mordecai & Me: An Appreciation of a Kind\, which won the Quebec Writers’ Federation’s 2003 Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction and The Canadian Jewish Book Award; and Bad Animals: A Father’s Accidental Education in Autism.\n\n\nA book reviewer for the Montreal Gazette and contributor to the Toronto Star\, Canadian Geographic\, National Post\, The Walrus\, and The Village Voice\, he won two National Magazine Awards\, The Malahat Review’s Creative Non-fiction prize for his personal essay Bad Day\, and co-authored with Peter Curtis\, the musical Love U: The Grad School Musical. This work is important and distinguished\, but it is not his only legacy. Joel left a community of readers\, editors\, publishers\, friends\, writers\, and aspiring writers who benefited from his work\, friendship\, guidance and fellowship. Her debut poetry chapbook\, How Not to Spill\, co-won the 2019 BP Nichol Chapbook Award\, and her short story “Bad Cree” won the 2020 Writers’ Trust Journey Prize and won silver at the 2020 National Magazine Awards. Her novel BAD CREE will be released in January 2023 with HarperCollins. \nGarry Gottfriedson is from Kamloops\, BC. He is strongly rooted in his Secwepemc (Shuswap) cultural teachings. He holds a Masters of Arts Education Degree from Simon Fraser University. In 1987\, the Naropa Institute in Boulder\, Colorado awarded a Creative Writing Scholarship to Gottfriedson. There\, he studied under Allen Ginsberg\, Marianne Faithful and others. Gottfriedson has 10 published books. He has read from his work across Canada\, United States\, South America\, New Zealand\, Europe\, and Asia. Gottfriedson’s work unapologetically unveils the truth of Canada’s treatment of First Nations. His work has been anthologized and published nationally and internationally. Currently\, he works at Thompson Rivers University. \nMolly Cross-Blanchard is a white and Métis writer and editor from Treaty 6 living on the unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. She has an English BA from the University of Winnipeg and a Creative Writing MFA from the University of British Columbia\, and is the publisher at Room. A literary CV shines a light on your literary activities. Whether applying for funding or submitting a manuscript for consideration\, it’s a simple way to highlight your accomplishments. \nDuring the workshop\, participants will create a literary CV. We will discuss the sections of a literary CV and ways to present—and highlight—our accomplishments. Participants will write an artistic statement\, organize their list of publications\, and fill in the framework of a CV. Participants should expect to spend a few hours outside of class time to compile and type their accomplishments into a Word document. \nRegistration deadline: January 7th\, 2021. \nBlossom Thom is a poet and editor. She is the author of #HashtagRelief (Gaspereau Press\, 2017) and her poetry has appeared during art collaborations and in literary magazines and anthologies including Poetic Notions: A Weaving of Poetry and Visual Arts\, Kola: A Black Literary Magazine\, and Montréal Serai.
