SUMMARY:True Reads Book Club - Gay Bar: Why We Went Out
DESCRIPTION:VIA ZOOM Meeting ID: 845 5830 7388\nPasscode: 024605 \nCome discuss the best new Non-Fiction books with our True Reads book club! This month\, we’ll be discussing Gay Bar: Why We Went Out by Jeremy Atherton Lin. \nWhere and How Can I purchase the book?\nFind the book here: https://bit.ly/3fSab8f \nMore info on our webstore here:\nhttp://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/posts/webstore-faq \nWe Ship Canada-wide!\nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. Your support is appreciated. \n//////////////////////////////////////////////\nGAY BAR: WHY WE WENT OUT\nStrobing lights and dark rooms; throbbing house and drag queens on counters; first kisses\, last call: the gay bar has long been a place of solidarity and sexual expression—whatever your scene\, whoever you’re seeking. But in urban centers around the world\, they are closing\, a cultural demolition that has Jeremy Atherton Lin wondering: What was the gay bar? How have they shaped him? And could this spell the end of gay identity as we know it?\nIn Gay Bar\, the author embarks upon a transatlantic tour of the hangouts that marked his life\, with each club\, pub\, and dive revealing itself to be a palimpsest of queer history. In prose as exuberant as a hit of poppers and dazzling as a disco ball\, he time-travels from Hollywood nights in the 1970s to a warren of cruising tunnels built beneath London in the 1770s; from chichi bars in the aftermath of AIDS to today’s fluid queer spaces; through glory holes\, into Crisco-slicked dungeons and down San Francisco alleys. He charts police raids and riots\, posing and passing out—and a chance encounter one restless night that would change his life forever.\nThe journey that emerges is a stylish and nuanced inquiry into the connection between place and identity—a tale of liberation\, but one that invites us to go beyond the simplified Stonewall mythology and enter lesser-known battlefields in the struggle to carve out a territory. Elegiac\, randy\, and sparkling with wry wit\, Gay Bar is at once a serious critical inquiry\, a love story and an epic night out to remember.

SUMMARY:Poetry Book Launch: Because the Sun by Sarah Burgoyne and Exhibitionist by Molly-Cross Blanchard
DESCRIPTION:Join Coach House Books on April 27th at 8PM EST for the launch of two amazing collections of poetry: Exhibitionist by Molly Cross-Blanchard and Because the Sun by Sarah Burgoyne. There will be readings from both poets followed by a discussion and your chance to ask a question.\n\n\n \nAbout the books:\n \n\nCamus’s Meursault and Thelma and Louise meet up under the blazing sun. Vexed by the ‘unremarkable star’ that ‘presses’ Camus’s Meursault to commit murder\, Because the Sun considers the blazing sun as a material symbol of ambient violence – violence absorbed like heat and fired at the nearest victim. Likewise\, as a friendship between women confronts gendered aggression in Thelma and Louise\, the sun becomes the repository of pain\, the high noon that pushes us through desert after desert. Because the Sun’s pastiche of voices embodies both stylistic and formal relentlessness by teasing out tonalities that blend and merge into each other\, generating a blinding effect\, like looking into the sun.\n \n \nSmart\, raunchy poems that are sorry-not-sorry. “Sticky\, sad\, and sultry\, Exhibitionist is a merry-go-round circling back to the tender\, awkward parts of ourselves. Molly Cross-Blanchard allows her poems to ask the reader out for ice cream\, to fart at a dinner party\, to sprawl out on a chaise lounge\, stare through a dusty skylight and whisper that they think they may love you. And that love will be unmistakably mutual. ” —Mallory Tater\, author of The Birth Yard and This Will Be Good\n\n \n \nThe event will be hosted in Zoom Webinars. The event link will be sent over email one hour before the start of the event. Please register here.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Donna Morrissey
DESCRIPTION:The Knowlton Literary Association is pleased to announce an evening webinar with national bestselling author Donna Morrissey\, on April 23 at 7 p.m. \nPluck: A Memoir of a Newfoundland Childhood and the Raucous\, Terrible\, Amazing Journey to Becoming a Novelist is scheduled to be released this fall. It is a deeply personal reflection of a woman who left her isolated Newfoundland community at age 16\, eager to explore the world. Her path was difficult\, from the death of a teenaged brother who followed her to Alberta’s oilfields\, to mental illness\, marriage\, divorce and working in a fish processing plant to support her two young daughters. Ultimately Morrissey landed on her feet as one of Canada’s most prominent writers\, having penned six national bestselling novels. \nMany of Morrissey’s stories are drawn from her own varied life experiences\, combining darkness and light\, levity and sadness into her tale\, as the indomitable spirit and humour that sustains her. \nAn inspiring and insightful memoir\, Pluck illustrates that even when you find yourself unravelling\, you can find a way to spin the yarns that will save you–and delight readers everywhere. \nSponsored by the Writers’ Union of Canada\, this live webinar brings Morrissey\, who attended the 2017 Knowlton Literary festival\, back virtually to our local audience.

SUMMARY:Voices in the Dark: Writing the Braided Essay
DESCRIPTION:In this free 90-minute craft workshop\, delivered on Zoom\, Kasia Van Schaik will lead participants through the process of writing a personal essay using a braided technique: a form of nonfiction wherein the writer interweaves multiple threads and through-lines of material\, each on a different subject\, connecting the personal with the political. In this way\, the braided form allows us to think about the ways in which we are linked to our larger environments and ecosystems. The workshop will include a craft talk\, writing tips\, and creative exercises\, so bring a pen and paper! A short question and answer period will follow. \n  \nThe workshop is open to all interested participants; no creative nonfiction writing experience is necessary. There is no registration fee\, but you must register to attend. \n  \nThis workshop is co-produced by the Quebec Writers’ Federation and CBC Montreal.
