SUMMARY:Music and Mood: A Writing Workshop with Musical Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will produce and share writing that responds to music and the (virtual) presence of a live musician\, saxophonist Janet Lumb. By listening and tuning in to their own creative reactions\, writers will explore the interplay between music and mood as well as sound\, story\, and memory\, using language to examine the soundtracks in our lives. \nJanet Lumb\, a Toronto-born\, third generation Chinese Canadian\, lived in Vancouver for ten years as a hippie punk and has since 1984 been in Montreal as a musician\, composer\, ecologist and community activist. \nK.B. Thors is the author of Vulgar Mechanics (Coach House Books)\, the Icelandic-English translator of Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir’s Stormwarning (Phoneme Media) and the Spanish-English translator of Soledad Marambio’s Chintungo: The Story of Someone Else (Ugly Duckling Presse). She has taught Poetry and Creative Writing at Columbia University\, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan\, and the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies.

DESCRIPTION:This online panel presentation will use the recent volume\, Podcasting: New Aural Cultures and Digital Media (ed. Dario Llinares\, Neil Fox\, Richard Berry) as an opportunity to think and engage in discussion about the emergence of podcasting as a field of critical study. Hosted by SpokenWeb podcast series director Hannah McGregor\, the session will open with a presentation by one of the editors of the scholarly collection on Podcasting\, Dario Llinares\, in which he presents some of the main theses about podcasting presented in the book\, and reflects on how the landscape of research around podcasting is rapidly developing. We will then hear brief position papers from respondents Stacey Copeland (SFU)\, Elena Razlogova (Concordia U)\, Kim Fox (American University in Cairo)\, Michael O’Driscoll (U Alberta) and Deanna Fong (Concordia U)\, sharing perspectives on podcasting as a field of scholarly research and practice. DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 13\, 4pm\, in celebrating National Poetry Month with an online public poetry reading with Souvankham Thammavongsa.  While recently the recipient of this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize for her collection of short fiction\, How To Pronounce Knife\, Souvankham has written four acclaimed books of poetry\, including Cluster\, Found\, Light (which won the 2013 Trillium Book Award for poetry)\, and Small Arguments (which won the ReLit Award). She will be welcomed by Halifax Poet Laureate Sue Goyette\, and the reading will be followed by a brief Question and Answer session. \nSouvankham Thammavongsa is the author of four acclaimed poetry books and the short story collection How to Pronounce Knife\, winner of the 2020 Scotiabank Giller prize\, finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and PEN/America Open Book Award\, out now with McClelland & Stewart (Canada)\, Little\, Brown (U.S.)\, and Bloomsbury (U.K.)\, available in French\, and with foreign rights sold in China\, Korea\, and Turkey. Her stories have won an O. Henry Award and appeared in The New Yorker\, Harper’s Magazine\, The Paris Review\, The Atlantic\, Granta\, and NOON. Thammavongsa is a judge for the 2021 Griffin Poetry Prize. She was born in the Lao refugee camp in Nong Khai\, Thailand and was raised and educated in Toronto.
