SUMMARY:Speculative Fiction Master Class: Readying Your Work for Publication
DESCRIPTION:As in all of my workshops\, speculative fiction is defined broadly to include anything from science fiction to fantasy to slipstream to magic realism. Participants are free to submit a short story\, an excerpt from a larger work\, a script\, speculative poetry\, a comic\, or graphic novel excerpt. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will consist of ten sessions so as to give each participant the opportunity to workshop their piece twice: once for initial feedback and a second time once revisions have been made. We will begin by having each workshop member introduce themselves and their project\, including their intentions. Following these introductions\, I will give a brief presentation on different vectors of analysis in evaluating a piece\, including: \n\n\n\n\n story\, plot arc\, and pacingworldbuildingcharacter\, POV\, voice\, and tonedescriptions and other issues of language and writing qualitytheme and meaning/intention\n\nbeginnings and endings\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn week 1\, we will workshop a very short story that participants should read before we meet: Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” In discussing this story\, participants will have the opportunity to practice both the workshopping method and vectors of analysis that we will be employing during subsequent sessions. \n\n\n\nIn weeks 2 through 9\, we will workshop two to three submissions at each session. There will also be discussions and exchanges on a topic or topics related to one or more of the vectors of analysis mentioned in the first session. These topics will not be determined in advance\, but will flow organically from the submissions discussed that particular week. \n\n\n\nThe last session will be reserved for an in-depth presentation on maximizing your chances of publication\, including a list of resources\, and a guest presentation by a speculative fiction publisher. I will also answer any new questions that may have arisen in previous sessions. \n\n\n\n*This workshop will take place at the QWF Office (Room 3\, 1200 Atwater Avenue\, Westmount\, Quebec) with up to 2 virtual spots for participants who are unable to attend in-person. By default\, all workshop registrations are for in-person spots. If you would like to attend the workshop via Zoom\, first email Riley (riley@qwf.org) to see if online spots are still available for this workshop\, and then wait for confirmation. Virtual spots are limited and are reserved for people who either live outside Montreal or have a medical condition. \n\n\n\nSu J  Sokol is a writer of speculative and interstitial fiction as well as an editor. Xe is the author of three novels: Cycling to Asylum\, long-listed for the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic and optioned for a film; Run J Run; and Zee\, a finalist for the Janet Savage Blachford Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature. Les lignes invisibles\, the French translation of Cycling to Asylum\, was published in 2022 by VLB Imaginaire. Sokol’s short fiction and essays have appeared in various magazines and anthologies.

SUMMARY:A Complete Read-Through of G
DESCRIPTION:G is a sound. Phonetically\, it is represented as [χ]—and corresponds to خ in the Arabic alphabet—a guttural resonance shared between Afrikaans and Persian. Poets Klara du Plessis and Khashayar “Kess” Mohammadi composed G collaboratively as an act of hospitality into their languages and now they will read through the entire translingual collection\, activating the playful linguistic connections and shifts. Join them for a matinee performance\, Saturday\, 18 May\, at articule (6282 St-Hubert\, Montreal). Doors open at 230pm and the reading starts at 3pm. Books will be available at a discounted rate.

SUMMARY:Embodied Writing
DESCRIPTION:Hello all\, \nI’m excited to be offering an Embodied Writing workshop at Tiger Lotus Coop in Montreal for the first time in many years. But this time\, I’ll be integrating a brief Kundalini breathwork & meditation practice. \nABOUT ME: \nI am a lifelong writer of many stripes – I have written poetry since childhood; for years I dabbled in journalism; I have explored worlds of creative nonfiction; I have collaborated with visual artists who seek to add words; I have made a living for 8+ years with copywriting & editing; I am a slowly emerging novelist; I have a shiny little MA in Creative Writing; and I worked on feminist & anti-racist social justice campaigns at the Centre for Gender Advocacy for a period of 6 years – an experience that deeply influenced the way I use words. \nAside from being a writer\, I am also a Kundalini Yoga Teacher in training. I got into Kundalini as a way to heal from trauma and its many lifelong manifestations in my body\, as well as to counteract being a writer who sits in one place too long and forgets to breathe. \n*** \nTruth: writing happens in the body. The more you engage your senses\, the stronger your words are. And whatever emotions you recall from your depths are deeply rooted – on a cellular level. \nGetting out of our heads and into our bodies so that we can write with vital presence has the potential to be an empowering and healing act. Not to mention\, if we choose to write for others to read\, writing from the body helps to create real\, meaningful\, visceral connections. \nOur practice will include a breathing exercise; some light stretches; a short discussion; 3-4 writing prompts designed to interrogate the relationship between body and language; the option to share with the group (or not); and a brief meditation. \nThere will also be tea. 🍵 \nIf you’ve never done breathwork or meditated before\, it really doesn’t matter. This workshop is for anyone open to enhancing and expanding their writing practice – as well as for non-writers simply interested in exploring. \nWhen: Thursday June 6\, 5-7pm\nWhere: 10 Ave. Des Pins Ouest\, room 414\nWhat to bring: your journal & pen (pens & paper will be available.\nCost: $30 \n*To reserve a spot\, please email me: maya@khamalacopy.com \nI look forward to exploring with you! 🙏🏾 ❤️

Nine writers explore the rich histories of the immigrants\, labourers\, and activists who built the cultural\, social\, and political community that exists today\, all while reimagining what possibilities may lie ahead. As a project of BCRC\, the work was designed to strengthen community engagement and create an increased sense of belonging\, all while educating audiences on a commonly untold history. \n\n\n\n\nAttending in Person\n\n\n\nThe Adair Auditorium is located across from the QWF Office on the top floor of the Atwater Library and Computer Centre. \n\n\n\nNote: Because this event will take place after the library’s opening hours\, the main entrance to the library will be closed.
