SUMMARY:Bread and Stone book launch @ Counter-Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join Black Rose Books for an afternoon of author talks and the book launch of our forthcoming title Bread and Stone by Allan Weiss\, a gripping novel set amidst the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike as part of Counter-Congress 2024. \nORDER OF EVENTS Come for the entire afternoon or just for the book launch. We’d love to see you! \n3:00 pm: Prof. Marie Josée Lavalée of the Université de Montréal will discuss Different Shades of Red\, a book dealing with the vast variety of socialist thought that exists and that has existed. \n4:00 pm: Prof. Andras Gollner of Concordia University will give a talk on the current situation in Hungary and on the book The Forgotten Revolution\, dealing with the Hungarian socialist revolution in 1919. \n5:00 pm: Professor Allan Weiss of York University will launch Bread and Stone\, a gripping novel set amidst the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. Expect wine and cheese! \nAbout Bread and Stone: William McLean is an Alberta farm boy seeking the work that he believes God has put him on Earth to do. Returning from World War I in a crisis of conscience\, he finds his calling when he is drawn into Winnipeg’s labour movement by his army buddy Daniel Eckersley. As unrest mounts and the authorities respond with force\, William finds himself in the midst of an upheaval that could mean freedom — or destitution — for all. \nIn Bread and Stone\, Allan Weiss skillfully combines the story of one of the most dramatic real events in Canadian history\, the Winnipeg General Strike\, with the spiritual journey of a young man growing to understand who he is\, who he is becoming\, and what it is that he must do. \nAllan Weiss is a Toronto fiction writer and Professor of English at York University. He was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto to pursue his doctoral studies after completing his BA and MA at Concordia University. He is the author of three story cycles: Living Room (2001)\, Making the Rounds (2016)\, and Telescope (2019). Other short stories\, both realist and fantastic\, have appeared in various anthologies and magazines\, including Fiddlehead\, Wascana Review\, On Spec\, and the Tesseracts anthology series. His latest story\, “A Tartan of Many Colors\,” was published recently in the anthology Other Covenants: Alternate Histories of the Jewish People. \nFACEBOOK EVENT\nhttps://www.facebook.com/share/w5PncSihKZzkGABh \nABOUT BLACK ROSE BOOKS’ COUNTER-CONGRESS 2024\nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/counter-congress-2024-tickets-884288248957

SUMMARY:Sharing Stories Brings Us Together. Untold Stories Keep Us Apart.
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 6th\, 2024\, 6:00 pm\n\n\n\nFrench translation follows \n\n\n\nThis event is part of a project that seeks to gather writers\, poets and storytellers to come together and share stories. As the world seems to move toward polarization\, and deadly wars currently waged keeps many awake\, we need stories more than ever to build resilience and solidarity. In the words of Donna Morris stories… “ allows us to see as others see us. It allows us to play up our goodness and cast light on our darkness.” \n\n\n\nThe power of sharing stories as a catalyst for bridging national\, cultural and identity gaps inspired by the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Canada has been the main pillar of this initiative. \n\n\n\nAs a founder and member of the Benny Library Writers’ Collective\, the first story reading event will be launched at the Benny Library focusing on body image as one of the main themes. \n\n\n\nThe stories and poems will be in English and French\, although the contributors will be international and include stories from Iran\, China and possibly Britain. We hope Dr. Cathrine Richardson will open the session in the manner of the indigenous people of Canada. \n\n\n\nSome of the stories will be published on my website and with Persian translation. \n\n\n\nRoksana Bahramitash\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nRoksana Bahramitash\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP on Facebook

SUMMARY:Prose/Craft: Talk and Make with Speculative Fiction Writers
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 22\, 2024\, 7:00 pmOnline (Get Tickets)\n\n\n\nUrsula Whitcher\, whose debut collection North Continent Ribbon is released August 20th from Neon Hemlock Press (https://www.neonhemlock.com/)\, has assembled a cavalcade of crafty writers to celebrate their release. Please join them as they discuss the craft of speculative fiction with Marie Vibbert\, Erin Barbeau\, Kristen Koopman and Michael J. DeLuca\, all while speculating on the realities of fibercraft. This event is free but please RSVP on TicketSource to receive the Zoom link. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nOn Nakharat\, every contract is a ribbon\, and every ribbon is a secret\, braided tight and tucked behind a veil. Artificial intelligence threatens the tightly-woven network. Stability depends on giving each machine a human conscience—but the humans are not volunteers. In the midst of strife\, individual people struggle to hold onto their jobs and protect their lovers\, those trusted few who could draw back the veil. A collection of linked short stories originally published in Asimov’s and other fine venues. Includes an original novelette\, “A Fisher of Stars.” \n\n\n\nAbout Our Guests\n\n\n\nUrsula Whitcher is a writer\, poet\, and mathematician who grew up around mountains and now lives near the southern shores of Lake Huron. Ursula’s shorter work may be found in Asimov’s Science Fiction\, Analog\, and the Deadlands; the collection of interwoven stories North Continent Ribbon is published by Neon Hemlock Press. Find more links and social media at yarntheory.net. \n\n\n\nHugo and Nebula nominated author Marie Vibbert’s short fiction has appeared in top magazines like Nature\, Analog\, and Clarkesworld\, and been translated into Czech\, Chinese and Vietnamese. Her debut novel\, Galactic Hellcats\, was long listed by the British Science Fiction Award and her work has been called “everything science fiction should be” by the Oxford Culture Review. She also writes poetry\, comics\, and computer games. She’s the worst women’s professional football player you’ve ever met. By day she is a computer programmer in Cleveland\, Ohio. \n\n\n\nMichael J. DeLuca is the author of THE JAGUAR MASK\, a debut novel out from Stelliform Press in August 2024. His novella NIGHT ROLL was a finalist for the Crawford Award in 2020. He is the publisher of Reckoning\, a journal of creative writing on environmental justice. He operates the indie ebooksite Weightless Books. His short fiction has been appearing since 2005 in venues such as Beneath Ceaseless Skies\, Apex\, Mythic Delirium\, Fusion Fragment\, and Three-Lobed Burning Eye. He lives amid post-industrial woodlands north of Detroit with partner\, kid\, cats\, and microbes. \n\n\n\nErin Barbeau (ze/zir) is a nonbinary science fiction author and entomologist. When Erin isn’t poking caterpillars\, they can be found enjoying alternative fashion and illustration. Zir work has appeared in Fantasy & Science Fiction and several academic journals. \n\n\n\nKristen Koopman is an academic\, writer\, and nerd. Her interests include blatant escapism\, overanalyzing anything and everything\, playing with dogs\, and garlic. She is definitely not two smaller Kristen Koopmans in a trenchcoat.
