DESCRIPTION:This event has been rescheduled from September 11–13 to August 28–30. \nA women’s writing weekend (non-binary writers welcome)\, open to experienced writers of fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry and all in-between genres. The retreat is designed to help you bring what you are writing into alignment with what wants to be written\, for the sake of all creation. In a quiet natural setting by a pristine lake\, we will open ourselves to whatever wants to speak through us\, in conscious alliance with both nonhuman and human intelligences. As our deepest knowing often shows up in our dreams\, we will begin each day with dreamwork.\nWe’ll be staying in chalets beside a small lake in a quiet wooded area ten minutes north of Rawdon\, which is just over an hour north of Montreal. There will be time off in the afternoon for hiking\, boating\, swimming. Vegetarian meals will be shared in the main cabin. Cost for the weekend is $300 Can which includes a single room and meals. There is a handrail. Bathrooms are on the same level as the venue. There is seating reserved for those who need.\n \n— \nEvery audience member will receive a mini zine of prompts to guide you through the evening\, readings and performances. Each author will read passages from their recently published literary works\, followed by a question period where the audience is encouraged to participate. With works spanning from a teen dystopian novel to genre-bending single-sentence stories\, it is certain to be a lively discussion! DESCRIPTION:Agents read hundreds of submissions each week\, and small mistakes often bury a promising manuscript. \nIn this Lunch and Learn\, join us as we hear from Michelle Barker and David G. Brown\, senior editors of The Darling Axe\, who will discuss what makes for a strong query letter to literary agents. Participants will examine an intentionally flawed (and fake) query letter and synopsis for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter\, as well as the (real) opening of the book\, and diagnose the problems that weaken them. We will then look at improved versions of the query and synopsis and discuss some important components of an opening. She has published three YA novels (one fantasy and two historical fiction)\, a historical picture book\, and a chapbook of poetry. Her latest project is a poetry collection called Chef (Caitlin Press\, 2027). Michelle holds a BA in English literature (UBC) and an MFA in creative writing (UBC). Many of the writers she’s worked with have gone on to win publishing contracts and honours for their work. Michelle lives and writes in Vancouver\, Canada. \n\n \n\nDavid Griffin Brown is an award-winning short fiction writer and co-author of Immersion and Emotion: The Two Pillars of Storytelling\, Story Skeleton: The Classics\, and Fake Query Letters by Dead Authors. She served as a Senior Lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Department of Arts from 2018-2026\, and as Director of the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer from 2020-2026. In 2025\, Loveless published A Year of Deep Listening: 365 Text Scores for Pauline Oliveros\, which brought together a year’s worth of daily scores for listening\, contributed by over 300 artists. Her co-edited volume\, Situated Listening: Attending to the Unheard (2025)\, is a collection of essays that contribute theories and practices of embedded\, contextual\, and critical listening to the growing literature in the field of sound studies. https://stephanieloveless.com \nKATHERINE MCLEOD is an academic and dancer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Alongside her project Literary Radio and publications on poetry and performance\, she produced the series ShortCuts for The SpokenWeb Podcast and now co-hosts the podcast Literary Listening (with Jason Camlot). \nNIK FORREST is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tio’tia:ke/Montreal. They recently completed a PhD in the Interdisciplinary Humanities program at Concordia University titled “Trans Sonic Practices: Listening and Sounding Livable Worlds”. Their sound\, video\, and installation projects have been shown at festivals\, galleries and museums across Canada and internationally\, including at the Joliette Art Museum (Quebec)\, the Listening Biennale (Berlin)\, Oboro (Montreal) and Kunsthalle Mulhouse (France). They have also received artists’ residencies in Paris\, Buenos Aires\, Hamburg\, Winnipeg and Saskatoon. Forrest’s recent projects explore experimental sound and listening as non-binary relational fields in which emergence\, mutation and interdependence can be sensed. They teach in the Media Arts Department at John Abbott College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue\, Quebec. https://nikforrest.org \nERIN GEE is a Canadian artist and composer whose work centers on voice\, affect and technology. She develops custom biofeedback instruments that link the human body to sound and interactive systems. In creating these systems\, she considers emotional manipulation as a technical layer alongside hardware and software in biofeedback systems\, linking this to feminist theory. Using roleplay\, ASMR and hypnosis\, she explores intimacy and resonance while reimagining human–machine relations across AI\, VR\, and robotics. Her installation works have been presented at Ars Electronica\, MUTEK\, and the Toronto and Karachi Biennales\, and she has performed at festivals such as MUTEK\, Vancouver New Music\, Sussurra Luce (Italy) and Music Gallery (Toronto). https://eringee.net \nJerusalem-born\, Montreal-based vocalist and composer AYELET ROSE GOTTLIEB is an international performer and Deep Listener who blends jazz\, Middle Eastern and Jewish music with conceptual improvisation. He toils in several fields\, having played on over one hundred CDs and on film and television soundtracks. He has composed and designed sound for theatre\, dance and installations; designed radio transmissions; and performs live\, spanning early medieval music to experimental electronics. Using historical performance practice\, field recording\, invented/augmented instruments and videoscores\, she often works in close collaboration with others and produces performances\, gatherings and events. She also works for the Canada Council for the Arts. \nKATHY KENNEDY is a sound artist with formal training in visual art and classical singing. Her art practice generally involves the voice and issues of interface with technology\, often using telephony or radio transmission. She is active in community art and is a founder of the digital media centre for women in Canada\, Studio XX (now called Ada-X)\, as well as the innovative women’s choral group\, Choeur Maha. https://kathykennedy.ca \nERIC LEWIS is the president of Arts in the Margins and a professor of philosophy at McGill University\, where he directs the Laboratory of Urban Culture. His academic interests centre on Black aesthetics\, critical race theory\, the philosophy of improvisation and the politics and ethics of new media art. He has decades of experience running community-facing art-centred projects\, and a strong commitment to social justice and equity. He is also an active improviser on brass and reeds\, and performs in numerous ensembles including Ton-e Rêve\, the Free Jazz Messengers\, the Murray Street Band and the Instant Synthesis Ensemble\, among others. \nELLEN WATERMAN is a flutist and vocalist who co-creates intersensory improvisations with environments. Bodily Listening in Place was developed in consultation with spill.propagation through a commission from New Adventures in Sound Art for World Listening Day\, 2022. She wrote about it for Performance Matters journal (2023). Her definitions of intersensory listening and bodily listening in place are included in the new Listening Glossary (2026).

SUMMARY:The Art of the Braided Essay
DESCRIPTION:Eight Mondays\, Oct 5–Nov 30\, 8:00–10:00 p.m. (no meeting Oct 12)\nOpen to all\nLimited to 12 participants \n  \nCreative nonfiction thrives on surprising connections and shocking twists. The essay in particular is a form that often seeks to find truth by bringing together disparate narratives. Creating depth and tension through unexpected juxtaposition of themes\, images and even styles\, it allows us to examine a subject anew from multiple angles–personal\, historical\, cultural\, whatever catches your imagination! \n  \nBut how do you find those different threads\, and once you’ve got them\, how do you structure your thoughts? How do you go from a mass of disparate observations to a cohesive\, powerful and surprising work of creative nonfiction? \n  \nThat’s where braiding comes in. As essayist Nicole Walker writes\, “radical braiding is a foundation of creative nonfiction.” It exists in almost every mode\, from personal essay to literary journalism. It even pops up in fiction. Braiding narratives can bring breadth to a personal story\, intimacy to a scientific subject\, and drama to the mundane. As with the hairstyle\, a braid can be neat or messy\, simple or endlessly complex\, with a pattern that breaks apart only to come together in the end as a fascinating\, unexpected whole. \n  \nWhether you’re starting a new project or looking to bring fresh complexity to a work in progress\, this eight-week workshop will offer a deep dive into the craft of braiding. Through readings\, writing activities and peer and instructor feedback\, participants will learn from writers who use the form with great skill and apply that knowledge to their own work. Participants should be prepared to complete the session with a draft of a braided essay. \n  \nBefore our first meeting\, please read “The Braided Essay as Social Justice Action” by Nicole Walker and come prepared to write! \n  \nErika Thorkelson is the author of two forthcoming books of creative nonfiction: How to Look at a Volcano\, an essay collection that explores the intimate effects of large-scale instability and disaster\, both human made and natural (Book*Hug Press 2027)\, and Clumsy\, a memoir about growing up poor and nerdy on the prairies at the end of the 20th Century (NeWest Press 2028). Her work has appeared in local and national publications including Geist\, Prairie Fire and The Walrus.
