SUMMARY:Travel Through Metaphor
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 13\, 20256:00–8:00 pm ET\n\n\n\nAmplify your poetic curiosities with fresh takes on figurative language. \n\n\n\nMany writers rely to some degree on figurative language\, which offers the pitfall of cliché or the opportunity for imaginative travel. Strong use of metaphor helps us move away from what we think we know and come closer to a new understanding of what is possible. In this generative workshop\, we will develop fresh approaches to metaphor and other figures of speech. You can expect to leave the workshop with tools for developing your own metaphorical and descriptive power. The workshop is open to writers of all levels and genres\, but some basic experience with poetry writing is recommended. \n\n\n\nEmail sarahwolfsonwriter@gmail.com to reserve your spot in advance. Space is limited.  \n\n\n\nSarah Wolfson is an award-winning poet and teaching artist. Her collection A Common Name for Everything won the 2020 A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry. Her poems have appeared in literary journals such as The Walrus\, The Fiddlehead\, Geist\, CV2\, Arc\, TriQuarterly\, and The Yale Review. She has taught poetry writing in a variety of contexts to people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and experience levels.

SUMMARY:Mapping Your Poetic Voice
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 28\, 20255:00–7:00 pm ET\n\n\n\nLearn techniques to express the unique way your mind meets the world. \n\n\n\nIn this generative workshop\, we will consider factors that contribute to poetic voice. In doing so\, we will see that our voices are not waiting to be found somewhere outside of ourselves. Rather\, they call us to listen deeply to who we are and how we experience the world. You can expect to leave the workshop with tools for thinking about what makes your poetic expression unique. The workshop is open to writers of all levels\, but some basic experience with poetry writing is recommended. \n\n\n\nEmail sarahwolfsonwriter@gmail.com to reserve your spot in advance. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Quietly\, Loving Everyone by Curtis John McRae
DESCRIPTION:Véhicule Press invites you to the launch of Curtis John McRae’s debut short story collection Quietly\, Loving EveryoneJoin us for an evening of readings and conversation with the author and Dimitri Nasrallah. The event is free and open to all. \n\n\n\nQuietly\, Loving Everyone\, Curtis McRae’s debut collection of stories\, assembles a meditative and often profound cycle of portraits pulled from everyday Canadian life. A young boy raises James Dean from the dead\, only to find out the cult icon is not the playmate he’d hoped for. A university student riddled with ulcers silently spirals after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. A young girl takes a road trip with her older sister to Cape Cod\, and years later reconstructs the tragic circumstances behind what she remembers. A couple goes on a date at an old porn theatre that is the last remaining vestige of a neighbourhood that has moved on. McRae plays witness to characters at those crucial beginnings or ends of relationships\, with lovers\, friends\, family\, and most importantly themselves. \n\n\n\nCurtis John McRae is editor-in-chief at Yolk Literary Journal. His fiction has appeared in The New Quarterly\, Prairie Fire\, Chronicling the Days anthology (Guernica Editions\, 2021)\, and others. He lives in Montreal.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 10\, 2024\, 2:00-4:00 pm ET\n\n\n\nLibrairie Paragraphe Books and Paimpsest Press present and afternoon of poetry featuring Jim Johnstone\, Klara Du Plessis\, and Katherine Alexandra Harvey. \n\n\n\nJoin poets Jim Johnstone\, Klara Du Plessis\, and Katherine Alexandra Harvey as they read from and sign from their latest respective works: The Anstruther Reader (editor)\, Post-Mortem of the Event\, and Let Me Evaporate. \n\n\n\nAlso scheduled to appear: Darren Bifford\, Sarah Burgoyne. \n\n\n\nAdmission is Free.Refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nAbout the Books\n\n\n\nThe Anstruth Reader\n\n\n\nCompiled to celebrate ten years worth of limited edition chapbooks and broadsides\, The Anstruther Reader tracks the evolution of Anstruther Press\, one of Canada’s most prominent micropresses. Featuring notable authors such as Klara du Plessis\, Tolu Oloruntoba\, David Ly\, Rebecca Salazar\, David Barrick\, Fawn Parker\, and T. Liem\, The Anstruther Reader makes a case for the press’s reputation as a launching pad for emerging and established poets alike\, and spotlights its mandate to publish poetry that both pushes against and expands the boundaries of Canadian literature. \n\n\n\nPost-Mortem of the Event\n\n\n\nThe event represents the lyrical\, but an attempt at defining the event endlessly defers meaning—poetry readings\, death\, belonging\, the digital and— Post-Mortem of the Event is a cyclical archive that twists back to recorded readings of Klara du Plessis’s earlier Hell Light Flesh and leans forward to invoke a still unwritten manuscript. Here poetic composition encompasses audiovisual media\, transcription\, wave form visualization\, and digital humanities and interdisciplinary methods. With the maturity of three previous collections\, Du Plessis presents a brilliant expansion of her musical yet essayistic poetics. \n\n\n\nLet Me Evaporate\n\n\n\nInfo TBA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP on FAcebook
