SUMMARY:Breathing Space / Reprendre son souffle
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Space is a summer evening series for short readings and performances in any language. In-progress\, experimental\, or unfinished work is welcome\, new collaborative work is enthusiastically encouraged\, trying things out is invited. What we hope is to create room to be unsure and that be okay. \nThere will be a mix of scheduled readers\, and six sign-up spots available on the day. Readings will be approximately 5 minutes. \nHosted by Aaron Boothby & Rachel McCrum. On a hâte! \nAnimé par Aaron Boothby & Rachel McCrum. \n.

SUMMARY:3GénPo
DESCRIPTION:3GénPo = 3 poets\, 3 generations\, 3 new books // 3 poètes\, 3 générations\, 3 recueils nouveaux \n3GénPo is a prepared poetry book launch and peformance in English with interferences and additions in French by three Montreal poets from 3 generations whose practice is mostly in English: Erín Moure\, whose first book came out in 1979; Kaie Kellough\, whose first book came out in 2005\, and Nicole Raziya Fong\, whose first book just came out in April\, 2019. All their works look critically and humanely at origin\, history\, phenomenology\, thinking\, and being via poetry\, poetry’s sounds\, and via listening to the generations\, in Canada and around the world. They have books but reject the commodification of the author and celebrate the conversations poetries engender. They read together so that their works may accompany each other and join listeners and readers\, at least for one great evening! \nBring cash if you wish to buy poetry books\, please! \n+ \nThis event is part of PUBLISHING SPHERE\, a conference organized by the Canada Research Chair in Digital Textualities\, University of Montreal.

SUMMARY:This Way To Egress: Developing a Novel or Memoir Already in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leader: Maya Merrick \nCost: $80 \nPayment is due within one week of registration to confirm your spot. Please review our cancellation policy. \nFor more information\, or to register: (514) 933-0878 or workshops@qwf.org \nPT Barnum billed his “Egress” as a fearsome attraction\, but visitors to his museum found out the truth: The egress was nothing more than the exit. During this workshop\, we’ll do a little truth-seeking of our own to discover what completing a novel or memoir is really all about. We’ll debunk some myths\, allay some fears\, and demystify the process\, turning the thought of finishing a long work from a petrifying prospect to a realistic goal. \nWriting a novel or memoir in isolation can be exhilarating\, but it can also leave you with abandoned drafts\, half-written chapters\, and the sinking feeling that there’s no way out. Gaining insight from unbiased readers—myself and the other members of the group—in a supportive\, creative atmosphere will help you identify issues\, clarify your intent\, and find real ways to improve your manuscript. To this end\, our primary focus will be on the craft of writing. Through exercises and activities\, we’ll pinpoint potential trouble spots and equip you with the tools to address them. \nActivities will be combined with discussions aimed at helping you gain new insight to constructing and completing your novel or memoir. We’ll explore ways to approach characters\, work with point of view (POV) and tense\, create immersive scenes\, and reinforce the structure of your existing manuscript. Because writing a novel or memoir takes as long as it takes\, this workshop is designed to inspire you to finish your manuscript in your own time. \nThis workshop is intended for writers who are looking for guidance and encouragement while working on a novel or memoir already in progress\, so please be prepared to share elements of your work with the group. Ideally\, you’ll have a portion of your novel or memoir already completed\, as well as a solid grasp of the story you’re working on. \nWe’ll be doing writing exercises in pairs or groups\, so be sure to bring a pen and paper with you. Readings and illustrative materials will be provided.
