SUMMARY:Argo 50th Anniversary Party
DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, following a fire at the old store on the south side of Ste. Catherine\, Mr. John George relocated the Argo Bookshop to its current location at 1915 Ste. Catherine West. 50 years later\, the Argo is the oldest independent English-language bookstore in Montreal\, which is something to celebrate! \nIn 2017\, two friends took on the helm of the Argo\, gave it a sprucing up\, and put in a slate of weekly events\, a lounge space\, and a wide new selection of books. Two years later\, we think the community of writers and readers that have come together around the store is something to celebrate\, too! \nSo please join us on Sunday\, July 28\, for this double anniversary party\, and enjoy cupcakes\, discounts\, guest booksellers\, decorations\, and giveaways! This place has always been about community\, so let’s celebrate the past and future of the Argo together.

SUMMARY:The Clothesline Swing (Violet Hour Book)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next meeting of the Violet Hour Book Club\, a reading group devoted to modern and classic works of LGBTQ literature. \nThe book we will be discussing is The Clothesline Swing (2017) by Ahmad Danny Ramadan. \nABOUT THE BOOK /// \nThe Clothesline Swing is a journey through the troublesome aftermath of the Arab Spring. A former Syrian refugee himself\, Ramadan unveils an enthralling tale of courage that weaves through the mountains of Syria\, the valleys of Lebanon\, the encircling seas of Turkey\, the heat of Egypt and finally\, the hope of a new home in Canada. \nInspired by One Thousand and One Nights\, The Clothesline Swing tells the epic story of two lovers anchored to the memory of a dying Syria. One is a Hakawati\, a storyteller\, keeping life in forward motion by relaying remembered fables to his dying partner. Each night he weaves stories of his childhood in Damascus\, of the cruelty he has endured for his sexuality\, of leaving home\, of war\, of his fated meeting with his lover. Meanwhile Death himself\, in his dark cloak\, shares the house with the two men\, eavesdropping on their secrets as he awaits their final undoing. \nHosted by Christopher DiRaddo \nRemember\, as book club members\, you get 15% off all book club selections at Librairie Paragraphe Bookstore. \nNOTE: Ahmad Danny Ramadan will be in Montreal for a special on-stage interview about his book on Wednesday\, August 14.
