DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 11\, award-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang will give a free talk—open to all—via the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program at the University of Calgary. Gene’s renowned works include American Born Chinese (the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award)\, Boxers & Saints\, the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics\, Dragon Hoops\, and the New Super-Man series (with DC Comics). \nHis talk will explore the making of comics and graphic novels\, bridging the gap between words and pictures\, and the importance of narratives that convey a multitude of cultural experiences. The event will conclude with a live audience Q&A moderated by Bart Beaty\, professor of advanced studies in comics at the University of Calgary.
