SUMMARY:Prose/Craft: Talk and Make with Speculative Fiction Writers
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 22\, 2024\, 7:00 pmOnline (Get Tickets)\n\n\n\nUrsula Whitcher\, whose debut collection North Continent Ribbon is released August 20th from Neon Hemlock Press (https://www.neonhemlock.com/)\, has assembled a cavalcade of crafty writers to celebrate their release. Please join them as they discuss the craft of speculative fiction with Marie Vibbert\, Erin Barbeau\, Kristen Koopman and Michael J. DeLuca\, all while speculating on the realities of fibercraft. This event is free but please RSVP on TicketSource to receive the Zoom link. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nOn Nakharat\, every contract is a ribbon\, and every ribbon is a secret\, braided tight and tucked behind a veil. Artificial intelligence threatens the tightly-woven network. Stability depends on giving each machine a human conscience—but the humans are not volunteers. In the midst of strife\, individual people struggle to hold onto their jobs and protect their lovers\, those trusted few who could draw back the veil. A collection of linked short stories originally published in Asimov’s and other fine venues. Includes an original novelette\, “A Fisher of Stars.” \n\n\n\nAbout Our Guests\n\n\n\nUrsula Whitcher is a writer\, poet\, and mathematician who grew up around mountains and now lives near the southern shores of Lake Huron. Ursula’s shorter work may be found in Asimov’s Science Fiction\, Analog\, and the Deadlands; the collection of interwoven stories North Continent Ribbon is published by Neon Hemlock Press. Find more links and social media at yarntheory.net. \n\n\n\nHugo and Nebula nominated author Marie Vibbert’s short fiction has appeared in top magazines like Nature\, Analog\, and Clarkesworld\, and been translated into Czech\, Chinese and Vietnamese. Her debut novel\, Galactic Hellcats\, was long listed by the British Science Fiction Award and her work has been called “everything science fiction should be” by the Oxford Culture Review. She also writes poetry\, comics\, and computer games. She’s the worst women’s professional football player you’ve ever met. By day she is a computer programmer in Cleveland\, Ohio. \n\n\n\nMichael J. DeLuca is the author of THE JAGUAR MASK\, a debut novel out from Stelliform Press in August 2024. His novella NIGHT ROLL was a finalist for the Crawford Award in 2020. He is the publisher of Reckoning\, a journal of creative writing on environmental justice. He operates the indie ebooksite Weightless Books. His short fiction has been appearing since 2005 in venues such as Beneath Ceaseless Skies\, Apex\, Mythic Delirium\, Fusion Fragment\, and Three-Lobed Burning Eye. He lives amid post-industrial woodlands north of Detroit with partner\, kid\, cats\, and microbes. \n\n\n\nErin Barbeau (ze/zir) is a nonbinary science fiction author and entomologist. When Erin isn’t poking caterpillars\, they can be found enjoying alternative fashion and illustration. Zir work has appeared in Fantasy & Science Fiction and several academic journals. \n\n\n\nKristen Koopman is an academic\, writer\, and nerd. Her interests include blatant escapism\, overanalyzing anything and everything\, playing with dogs\, and garlic. She is definitely not two smaller Kristen Koopmans in a trenchcoat.
