SUMMARY:Heather O'Neill Launches The Capital of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:September 12\, 2024\, 7:00-9:00 pm\n\n\n\nJoin Heather O’Neill\, Drawn & Quarterly\, and HarperCollins Canada to launch THE CAPITAL OF DREAMS\, a breathtaking dark fairy tale of survival and betrayal from the vivid imagination of Heather O’Neill. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place at 7 pm on Thursday September 12th at La Sala Rossa\, 4848 St Laurent Blvd. \n\n\n\nThe author will appear in conversation with Laurel Sprengelmeyer of Little Scream and there will be a book signing following the presentation. \n\n\n\nPoster by Arizona O’Neill. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS: https://www.venuepilot.co/events/101361/orders/new#/BUY THE BOOK: https://shorturl.at/JRsZw \n\n\n\nFourteen-year-old Sofia Bottom lives in a small country that Europe has forgotten. But inside its borders\, the old myths of trees that come alive and fairies who live among their roots have given way to an explosion of the arts and the consolations of philosophy. No one\, from the clarinetists to the cabaret singers\, is as revered as Sofia’s brilliant mother\, the writer Clara Bottom. How can Sofia\, with a tin ear and an enduring love of the old myths\, ever hope to win her mother’s love? \n\n\n\nWhen the country’s greatest enemy invades\, and the Capital is under threat\, at last Clara turns to her daughter. Sofia must smuggle her new manuscript to safety on the last train evacuating children from the city. But the train draws to a suspicious halt in the middle of a forest\, and Sofia runs for her life\, losing her mother’s most prized possession. Frightened and alone in a country at war\, Sofia must find a way to reclaim what she has lost. On an epic journey through woods and razed towns\, colliding with soldiers\, survivors and other lost children\, Sofia must make the choice between kindness and survival. \n\n\n\nIn this stunning dark fairy tale of a novel\, Heather O’Neill reveals once again her mastery of language that is as delicious as cake and as serious as a gunshot. \n\n\n\nHeather O’Neill is a novelist\, short-story writer and essayist. Her most recent novel\, When We Lost Our Heads\, was a #1 national bestseller and a finalist for the Grand Prix du Livre de Montréal. Her previous works include The Lonely Hearts Hotel\, which won the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction and was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and CBC’s Canada Reads\, as well as Lullabies for Little Criminals\, The Girl Who Was Saturday Night\, and Daydreams of Angels\, which were shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction\, the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Scotiabank Giller Prize two years in a row. O’Neill has also won CBC’s Canada Reads and the Danuta Gleed Award. Born and raised in Montreal\, she lives there today. \n\n\n\nThe Sala Rossa is located on the second floor (there are 38 steps total). There are gender neutral washrooms which are not wheelchair accessible. We have a Hearing Assistance System on the FM dial at 101.1 FM. Please email events@drawnandquarterly.com if you have any accessibility needs we can accommodate.

SUMMARY:Writing for Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:Do you watch documentaries? \n\n\n\nWould you like to direct a short film? \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will learn how to craft a brief documentary film proposal. \n\n\n\nYou do not need any filmmaking experience. You do need a great story and a few ideas about how you want to tell it. \n\n\n\nWorkshop #1 will start with an introduction to the key elements of a documentary film proposal\, such as the POV (point of view)\, the protagonists\, the dramatic arc\, and universal themes. Relevant documentary film excerpts will be screened to reinforce these points. Then we’ll discuss some of the issues that you need to consider in order to move from a great idea to a serious proposal. At the end of the workshop\, you will be invited to create a draft one-page proposal of your film project before the next session. \n\n\n\nDuring Workshop #2\, participants will present their draft film projects to the group. Each presenter will have an opportunity to ask the group for honest and respectful feedback regarding ethical and/or creative issues. Whenever relevant\, I will share some of my personal documentary filmmaking experiences; for instance\, how and why certain scenarios were modified during the development stage. Finally\, I will provide information regarding “next steps.” Whether you want to learn how to conduct further research on a particular topic or how to access filmmaking equipment so you can start experimenting with images\, I will help steer you in the right direction. \n\n\n\nA born storyteller\, Megan Durnford (she/her) is a Montreal-based writer and documentary filmmaker. Her latest documentary film\, Last Respects\, won the Betty Youson Award for Best Canadian Short Documentary at the 2023 Hot Docs International Film Festival. \n\n\n\nAfter 15 years of writing for periodicals\, multimedia projects and nonfiction books\, Megan made her first foray into documentary film with Just a Lawn (2007)\, a short documentary about the dark side of “perfect” lawns. In 2011\, Megan directed Une brique à la fois\, an affectionate portrayal of four Quebec adult LEGO builders. This 45-minute documentary was nominated for a Golden Sheaf Award (Documentary Arts/Culture) at the Yorkton Film Festival and was broadcast on Canal D in Quebec. In 2018\, Megan directed I Am Still Your Child. This documentary film\, about the impact of parental mental illness on children\, was broadcast on national CBC. Megan has studied documentary film at the Summer Institute of Film and Television in Ottawa and at IDFAcademy in Amsterdam. \n\n\n\nHer latest writing projects include profiles of documentary filmmakers Julien Elie and Justine Harbonnier for POV magazine and a nonfiction book for children\, entitled Our Plastic Problem\, for Orca Book Publishers.
