Learn about editing a literary journal and help curate the translation section of issue 55 of QWF’s digital literary magazine carte blanche.
The 2026 Fresh Pages Editorial Mentorship at carte blanche is now open to applications.
A component of the Fresh Pages Diversity Initiative, the Editorial Mentorship at carte blanche is a temporary, part-time, paid opportunity designed to give a Quebec-based artist the skills and experience to edit or manage a literary magazine.
For the 2026 Editorial Mentorship, the selected candidate will work with Translation Editor Nicola Danby to curate the translation section of carte blanche‘s 55th issue.
The mentorship will go to a Quebec-based writer with an interest in French-to-English translation or a Quebec-based literary translator. Applicants must not have previously worked as an editor for a professional magazine or literary journal. They do need need to be current QWF members.
The mentorship provides:
- Approximately 15 hours of mentorship between July and August 2026
- An $800 honorarium
- A free one-year membership (or extension of membership) in the Quebec Writers’ Federation
Your Mentor

Nicola Danby is a French-English translator with a BA (Honours) in Traduction et Stylistique from McGill University and an MA in Translation from York University. She has indulged her love of words through various positions: lecturer, teacher, revisor, translator, bookseller, and librarian, to name a few. Translation Editor at carte blanche for over a decade and literary translator in her own right, she was a member of the Translation Jury for the 2019 Governor General’s Literary Awards. She has been President of the Literary Translators’ Association Canada, and has worked with a range of translators and authors consulting on their writing. She lives in Montréal with her family.
Eligibility
- Applicants must live in Quebec and be Black, Indigenous, or a person of colour.
- There is no age or publication requirement. Applicants do not need to be current QWF members. Students and seniors are welcome to apply.
- Writers or translators who have already worked as an editor for a professional magazine or literary journal are not eligible to apply.
Timeline
- Call for applications: April 22, 2026
- Deadline for applications: Wednesday, May 20, 2026, 5:00 p.m. ET
- Notification of results: By late June 2026
- Period of mentorship: July–August 2026
- Publication of carte blanche issue 55: Fall 2026

- A sample of your French-to-English literary translation work (maximum two pages); any genre of literary translation is accepted, as long as it is from French into English.
