Administered by LTAC, QWF, and UNEQ

Deadline: Wednesday, November 11, 2026, 5:00 p.m. ET

LTAC, QWF, and UNEQ are pleased to announce a new annual mentorship program for literary translators. The National Literary Translation Mentorships—open to emerging and established literary translators working from French into English or from English into French, based anywhere in Canada—are now accepting applications.

The program will support two mentorship pairs every year, starting in 2027:

Previously, the LTAC/QWF Mentorships in Literary Translation offered one mentorship per year, alternating between the two mentorships. Now, with the additional support of UNEQ, both mentorships will take place concurrently every year.

About the Mentorships

One emerging and one established literary translator will be selected for each mentorship, which will take place from February 1 to May 31, 2027. The mentees and mentors will also be invited to participate in a public reading in Montreal in June 2027, along with the other members of the 2027 QWF Mentorship Program.

There is no fee to apply as a mentor or as a mentee.

Each mentee will be expected to commit at least 15–20 hours per month to the program from February through June. Each mentor will be expected to spend 30 hours on the program, spread over the four months, and attend the public reading in June. Remuneration for mentors is calculated on the UNEQ rate of $108.42 per hour for a total of $3252.60 (plus taxes if applicable).

Mentees and mentors will have to write a one-page report halfway through the mentorship program, and a one-page report at the end.

There is a modest amount (up to $500) available for travel for each mentorship pair.

The selection of the winning candidates will be conducted by an independent jury.

The selected candidates will be notified no later than December 18, 2026. When appropriate, depending on the location of the mentor and mentee, the mentorship may take place entirely or in part by email and over Zoom.

Mentee Eligibility Criteria

Emerging literary translators are invited to apply to be a mentee. Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must live in Canada
  • Must be translating French literary works into English or English literary works into French
  • Must not have already benefited from a QWF or LTAC mentorship (QWF Youth Mentorships and mini-mentorships excluded)

There is no publication requirement.

The two successful mentee applicants will be offered a free one-year membership in LTAC/ATTLC and in either QWF or UNEQ depending on the language they are translating into, if they are not already members. LTAC is offering an Associate or Student membership, and UNEQ is offering a « Membre aspirant/e » membership. QWF is offering a General, Professional, or Student membership.

Klein, M. Lowry, Clark Blaise, D.G. Jones, H.G. Weinberg, Ludwig Zeller, Irving Layton, Alberto Kurapel, Charles Taylor et même Mao Tse Toung.
