Eligibility criteria have changed!

This program is open to you if you are Black, Indigenous, or a person of colour.

Deadline to apply: February 17, 2021

Learn all about editing literary magazines and what it means to be an editor who works with writers to bring their best narrative to readers.

The creative non-fiction editor of the carte blanche literary journal will share what she knows about the writing and editing life and her best practices, as well as supporting you to develop your skills. Jen wants you to grow and will work to make the mentorship uniquely suited to your needs. You will talk together about your goals and how this experience can help you reach them.

About this Mentorship

You will receive:

  • approximately 15 hours of mentorship between March 1 and May 30, 2021;
  • a $300 honorarium;
  • and a free one-year membership in the Quebec Writers’ Federation.

Your Mentor

Jenny Ferguson (she/her/hers or they/them) is Métis (on her father’s side) and Canadian settler (on her mother’s side), an activist, a feminist, an auntie, and an accomplice with a PhD. She believes writing, teaching, and beading are political acts. Border Markers, her collection of linked flash fiction narratives, is available from NeWest Press. She teaches at Loyola Marymount University and in the Opt-Res MFA Program at the University of British Columbia.

You will be taught to read submissions, decide what to publish in the next few issues, and work with writers on editing selections. You will also have the chance to solicit work from a writer you admire.

You will be invited to apply for a permanent editor position after the mentorship.

Who Can Apply

  • Applicants must live in Quebec and be Black, Indigenous, or a person of colour.
