The “Dialogic Encounter” is a two-evening discussion of the recent novel, “Beirut Hellfire Society”, by Rawi Hage. On September 30, Prof. Cornett engages the audience directly both as a group and as individuals in a wide-ranging discussion of the novel, its techniques and themes, particularly as it engages with current social, philosophical and ethical issues. The audience also responds to the discussion and excerpts from the novel with their own brief written texts. These responses form the basis for the dialogue with Rawi Hage in the second session of the “Dialogic Workshop”, on October 7. The audience’s texts are read out and Hage is asked to reflect on the questions and issues and his own work.
