Japan Book Club – Masks
Looking for a good read for the height of summer? The Argo Bookshop, in conjunction with the JET Alumni Association of Quebec and Atlantic Canada, will be hosting its summer Japan Book Club on August 29.
For this meeting, we’ll be discussing Masks by Enchi Fumiko, a highly respected Japanese writer of the mid-20th century. In this novel, Toganō Mieko takes an increasing interest in the personal affairs of her widowed daughter-in-law, Yasuko. Devastated by the loss of her son, she skillfully manipulates the relationships between Yasuko and the two men who are in love with her, encouraging a dalliance that will have terrible consequences. Meanwhile, hidden in the shadows, is Mieko’s disabled daughter, who has her own role to play in her mother’s bizarre schemes. In Masks, Enchi has crafted a stunning and understated novel of seduction and infidelity.
Come for a lively discussion of a thought-provoking piece of Japanese literature by an author less known in North America, and enjoy some snacks and refreshments! You can read the book in English, French, or Japanese. You’re also welcome to come if you haven’t read the book, but there will likely be spoilers.
