Orla Polten (they/she) is a research affiliate at McGill University working on the relationship between magic and poetics. They earned their Ph.D. in English from the University of Cambridge, specialising in anglophone reception of Ancient Greek and Latin poetry. Polten’s first book, English Verse in Classical Metres, is forthcoming from Oxford University Press. Their current research asks what is at stake in the claim—prevalent in modernist poetic discourse—that poetry is a kind of magic.
