Doherty, Susan

Susan Doherty is an award-winning writer of works that include the novel A Secret Music and The Ghost Garden: Inside the Lives of Schizophrenia’s Feared and Forgotten. The latter received the QWF’s Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction in 2019. Her newest book of fiction—an exploration of the long-term effects of child exploitation—will be published in 2024. For over a decade she has taught bilingual creative writing to men and women with psychotic symptoms and people who reside in hospitals, group homes, and community housing. Her inclusive teaching methods are informal and incorporate humour and integrative memory exercises, always with an eye for relationship building and understanding the role of trauma. During the early days of Covid, she began giving interactive presentations to nursing students during their psychiatry rotation. Her idea is to help bridge the gap between the healthcare provider and patient to humanize the mental health landscape.
