Joel Fishbane is an award winning author of fiction, theatre and non-fiction. His fiction has been published in literary journals both in Canada and the United States, while his plays have been produced in Canada, the US and the United Kingdom. He is the recipient of a Creation Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts and a Research and Creation Grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec. His playwrighting or fiction workshops generally involve a basic discussion of the fundamentals of the genre with writing exercises designed to help students focus on a specific key area, such as dialogue or character development. A longer workshop may also involve a practical look at the business of being a writer including literary markets, crafting a query letter and the author – agent relationship.
