Leith, Linda

Born in Belfast, Linda Leith is a Montreal novelist and essayist who has lived in London, Basel, Paris, and Budapest. Her seven books include The Desert Lake (2007), the memoirs Marrying Hungary (2008) and Writing in the Time of Nationalism (2010; French translation, 2014), and, most recently, The Girl from Dream City: A Literary Life (2021). 

Linda founded the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival in 1998 and the publishing house Linda Leith Publishing in 2011. Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for her “contribution to Canada,” she was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in November 2020 “for connecting the country’s Anglophone and Francophone communities and for fostering creativity and intercultural understanding through a literary festival.” 

Linda has 25 years of experience teaching post-secondary students. In the classroom, she combines a reading of short excerpts from her work with a discussion of living in two or more languages, of displacement, and of writing about your own experiences as a child and adolescent.
