Papucaru, Rebecca

Rebecca Păpucaru’s debut novel, As Good a Place as Any (Guernica Editions, 2025) addresses themes such as queer identity, exile, and the intersectionality between the personal and the historical. A graduate of the Humber School for Writers, her short fiction has appeared in literary journals such as Event and Grain. Her short story “Yentas” won The Malahat Review’s 2020 Novella Prize. An experienced CEGEP English teacher, she is currently coordinator of the Peer Tutoring program at Champlain College, Lennoxville.

Practical workshops featuring the use of prompts and guided exercises encourage students to tell their own family stories and, ultimately, the story of themselves. Experimenting with voice, tone, and point of view, among others, students develop the confidence to explore forms such as flash memoir, fiction (short and flash) and epistolary stories.

Rebecca often uses dynamic PowerPoint presentations as well as video and audio clips, to provide greater context for discussions about her work and process. She will also confer in advance with teachers to ensure all material is appropriate and meets students’ needs. Please note that while she writes under the name, Păpucaru, she does most everything else under the name, Schwarz. You can find her at: @rebeccapapucaruwriter
