Proulx, Melanie

Melanie Proulx is a Ph.D. candidate at Queen’s University in cultural studies. Her research investigates how comics can testify to sexual violence trauma while minimizing the risk of retraumatizing survivors. In addition to being a scholar, Melanie is an artist with multiple publications, including a picture book about consent, a piece of micro-fiction, and a webcomic. She is also currently working on a graphic memoir based on her experiences as a rape survivor. Her proposed workshop, “Comics and Trauma,” would introduce students to several strategies comic artists use to convey trauma. The workshop would end with an optional exercise where participants could turn a traumatic experience into a comic.
