Sher, Julian

Julian Sher is the author of eight books on a wide range of topics from organized crime to the justice system and Internet safety; an award-winning documentary film-maker who has covered wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; the former Senior Producer at CBC’s premiere’s investigative TV show, The Fifth Estate; and a journalist whose articles have appeared in the Montreal Gazette, the Globe and Mail and the New York Times. He has lectured at many schools and has trained writers from more than 30 countries around the world. His talks include engaging PowerPoint presentations and suggestions for the students to do future study and research on their own.

He can give lively lectures and readings about diverse topics from his books including: (Until You Are Dead) A teenage boy jailed for a murder he didn’t commit—why innocent people get convicted in our flawed justice system; (One Child at Time) The battle to protect teenagers from Internet predators and the dangers of new technology; (The North Star) The hidden history of how Montreal’s elites made the city  a Confederate haven during the American Civil War while many ordinary Quebeckers chose to fight for the cause of freedom; (The Road to Hell) The threat of organized crime in Quebec and the police fight against biker gangs.

As a writer for TV, movies, books and newspapers, he can give students writing workshops on The Art of Story-telling (character journey and the narrative arc); Visual Story-telling (writing for television or social media streaming); Book Writing (recreating dramatic moments, dialogue, structure); Printed Story-telling: websites and newspapers (creating scenes, not paragraphs.)
