Siré, Cora

Cora Siré is the author of three books – a novel, novella and poetry collection. Her work has been published in many magazines and anthologies as detailed in her website, www.quena.ca. Her approach in the classroom is dynamic and interactive to encourage student engagement and participation. Examples of her lecture/seminar topics include: Creating imaginary worlds – how and why writers invent countries, and what it took to create a fictional place in her novel, Behold Things Beautiful (Signature Editions, 2016); In praise of the novella – What distinguishes this often under-appreciated form from the novel or short story? The experience of writing The Other Oscar (Quattro Books, 2016) and a discussion of other examples of novellas and the relationship of the form to film-making; and Politics & social justice in writing – Is there a role for politics in art and specifically in literary works? A discussion of human rights’ issues in the books by Cora Siré and other contemporary writers. She also offers creative writing workshops such as Your stories matter – An immersive adventure into writing flash fiction and Finding your rhythm in poetry – An exploration of how poems are enhanced by considering sound, metre and tempo. For students interested in pursuing a career as a writer, she offers an introductory talk, How do you know you’re a writer, and what does it take to be one? In all cases, she tailors her classroom activities to the students’ needs and the context of their courses.
